My children and I love the Charley's Alphabet series by Audrey and Bruce Wood. Alphabet Rescue (2006) is the third and currently final book in the series. The first two are Alphabet Adventure and Alphabet Mystery.

In Alphabet Rescue Charley's alphabet has finished their first year in school with Charley and are heading back to Alphabet City for a well earned summer vacation. While in the city they meet up with the local fire fighting squad and try their "hands" at being fire fighters. Unfortunate...more

Ready for a school break, these letters hope onto a pencil and soar to Alphabet City. The little alphabet hooks up with some capital letters to try out big fire hoses. When the hose gets out of control, the little letters are sent away. They find a broken fire engine and decide to rescue it. In their fixed up truck, the little letters zoom around the city, finding others to help. A car to clean, a 'cat' in a tree. When a fire breaks out at the letter factory, these little letters get to play a b...more

Wood, Audrey. Alphabet Rescue. Illus by Bruce Woods. The Blue Sky Press, 2006, unp, primary.
In Alphabet Rescue, follow the letters (that act like people) while they act as firefighters and save the day before they have to be back to the card they came from. The style of the large print is creative and creates a silly tone, which is exaggerated through the use of bold digital 3D pictures.
Activity: Go back through the book and play...more

This would have been a much bigger hit a few years ago. I think Julia's just a tad bit too old for this sort of story. Mommy loves books concerning books, libraries, letters, etc. so when I saw this I scooped it up without really looking at it.
The illustrations are bright and engaging and is one of the best parts of the book I think. Julia loved how all of the letters worked together and how she could follow along. I think the story would have had more punch if it had been in rhyme. A nice litt...more

My grandson loves this book. His kindergarten teacher read it to him. He couldn't wait to get home to tell his mommy all about it. He described the book in great detail down to the bright colors of each letter. When my daughter told me about the book, I knew immediately what book it was. I have read it at story time several times and it is a favorite especially with boys!

My 2 year old likes to look at the pictures. I imagine she will appreciate the book more when she is a bit older and is learning the concept of capital and small letters. I'll have to remember to get this book out the library again and maybe try the other books in this series.

I love this little kid book, great colorful pages, lots of phonics usage and kids, especially boys really get into the story since it has a fire truck and fires, a wonderful read for your toddler or preschooler!

Bright illustrations
While on vacation in Alphabet City, Little e and the other lowercase letters repair an old fire truck and come to the rescue when a fire engulfs the letter-making factory.

One of the cutest, most fun, and unique alphabet books you'll ever find. Utilizing the alphabet doesn't detract from the story, nor does the story detract from alphabet exposure/study.

Great for phonics usage, but my kids it bored very easily. The letters skip around and the younger kids have a difficult time differentiating between capital and lowercase letters.

This book is good to use to teach students about the alphabet. It is also useful to show students what capital and lowercase letters look like. This book is fun because it can keep students engaged while going through a journey with different letters of the alphabet.

This is a fantastic book for preschool age children that are becoming familiar with letters. In this story, different letters ride a fire truck and save other letters.

This is a very creative book and perfect for kids who love fire trucks and letters.

Another one of those cool beginner books teaching children their ABC's.

My 5 year old son really enjoyed this.

In this third title starring Charley’s alphabet, the lowercase letters takes a vacation to Alphabet City, where they work together to refurbish an old fire truck and save the letter factory when it erupts intos flames. Children just learning their alphabet will relish the crisp, digitally-produced illustrations that feature brightly-colored letters and detailed backgrounds, and adults will appreciate the effective emphasis on initial consonants.

All the little letters from Charley's Alphabet are disappointed when the capital letters won't let them have fun with the grown up fire truck.

Bold bright pictures and an engaging story will entertain children.
Recommended for children Prek-2nd grade
Laura
An exciting story of how the lower case letters were able to help out the upper case letters to save the day. Really fun to have the children search on the page for specific letters that are hiding within the pictures.

his was a good book, but i lost interest about half way through, so i'm sure children will also. This book is good to use when learning/teaching the difference between upper and lower case letters.

Pretty cool digital illustrations. My daughter seemed to like the book, but it doesn't really attempt to teach the alphabet. You learn a few letters and three words, but, that's about it.
Jennifer Evers
Alphabet book illustrated by Bruce Wood. Bold, colorful 3-D illustration makes the alphabet fun. Very different from a normal ABC book.
Heather
28 months - a relatively good alphabet book. Always nice to have variety and take a different look at the alphabet.
Kelley
I was amazed how much my boys enjoyed this alphabet book. Somewhat unique--not your typical book about letters.
Susan
My oldest boy and my third oldest both love letters and love this book!
