Ladybug Girl saves ants in distress, jumps through shark-infested puddles, and even skips along the great dark twisty tree trunk—all by herself. It doesn’t matter what her brother says, Ladybug Girl is definite...more

Wanna play with me? Mom and Dad are too busy. Her brother says she's too small. So Lulu and Bingo (her dog) need to find something to do. When she finds some ants being blocked by a rock, Ladybug Girl springs into action. Ladybug Girl realizes that the world needs her, and she is off to do some exploring. This is a classic glass-half-empty/glass-half-full story written for young readers to understand.

First, let me just applaud this book for not being PINK and SPARKLY. Instead it is red and sparkly and has a girl who is a spunky individual. Lulu's parents are busy and her big brother is playing baseball with his friends, so that leaves her to find her own fun along with her dog Bingo. Lulu spends the day outside in the backyard, running, saving ants from boulders, crossing puddles that could contain sharks, and building a fort of her own.

The Lady Bug Girl is about a young girl named Lulu who faces the troubles that her parents are too busy to play, and he older brother thinks she is too little to play. Lulu does not let that stop her she continues on and makes her own fun with her imagination, jumping through shark invested waters and climbing trees. Ladybug girl is definitely not too little. The illustrations help provide the reader with the innocence and determination that this young girl has, and helps the reader explore the...more

Ladybug Girl is a realistic fiction children’s picture book about a little girl named Lulu who calls herself Ladybug Girl. After her brother told her she was too little to play with him, she becomes frustrated and can’t find anything to do. She then went in her backyard and used her imagination to keep herself occupied. She helped move a rock for some ants, crosses a pond, fixes a stone wall to use as a fort, and runs all the way across a fallen tree without falling. In the end of the...more

Playing dress up is very important in a young child’s life and no child appreciates this more than Lulu.
Lulu is a smart and imaginative child, but when her mother tells her that she has to find her own entertainment for the day Lulu is lost. What can she do? Her brother Max does not want her around with his friends so off to her room she goes. That is not what a Ladybug Girls wants so out to the backyard she goes.

Lulu has the day to play by herself - mom and dad are busy, and her brother doesn't want her around.
So she DOES play by herself. She rescues ants. She climbs a log. She splashes in a puddle and counts Ls on the books. She proves to herself how big and grown-up she is.
I like that we see what she's really doing as she pretends. I've found that my nieces, when younger, often didn't understand more fantastical illustrations. They couldn't tell if the pictures showed what was REALLY happening or not,...more

Ladybug Girl is about a little girl named Lulu, and all the adventures to go one when she becomes Ladybug Girl. She ends up moving rocks for ants, running across a big pond away from sharks, rebuilds a stone wall and walks across a tree without falling. She found out that you can have so much fun if you just use your imagination.
The illustrations were very good and they showed how she was exaggerating what she was doing. The big lake she ran across with sharks was just a simple little...more

Glancing at my daughter's bookshelf, I realize we have a lot of precocious girl books. Let's see...there's Olivia, Lilly, Madeline, Eloise, Fancy Nancy, and Pinkalicious. And we haven't even gotten into Junie B. yet.
And then there's Lulu, a.k.a. Ladybug Girl. Like the others, she needs to rely on her imagination and self-reliance to make things right (although one might argue that things just sort of happen to Fancy Nancy and she just goes with it). And she's definitely a strong female character...more

This is (as far as I can tell) the first book in the series. Lulu is a fairly generic kid, so young she can't read, but apparently old enough to go play in the wilderness (or a really large backyard) without adult supervision. Most of the "plot" is just a bunch of activities she undertakes after her older brother won't let her play with him.
The thing that struck me about this book (and the rest of the books in the series) right away was the weird tense. I don't think I've read many picture books...more

Lulu (aka Ladybug Girl) and her trusty sidekick Bingo are some of the cutest 'superheros' around. I love the end paper illustrations of Lulu in her other costumes. I also loved Bingo's hysterical expressions throughout. This is a story of perseverance and imagination as Lulu fills her day with fun and adventure after being rebuffed by her older brother. The one big drawback to this book is that the text just felt a little thin. I just wanted a little more oomph to accompany these cuter than cute...more

I checked this out at the library recently and my 5 yr. old daughter LOVES it! I think she likes it so much because she can relate to Lulu, the main character so well. Lulu, is told by her older brother that she is "too little" to play ball with him and his friends. I'm sure that my daughter has heard those words many times. Then, her mom tells her that she needs to figure out her own fun time because mom and dad have work to do around the house. More words that my daughter has heard many times....more
I so badly wanted to love this book, because my daughter is going to dress up as a ladybug for Halloween. But it wasn't meant to be, apparently.[return][return]I absolutely love the illustrations, but the text didn't compare. It definitely had some endearing parts--like where she imagines a shark is in a deep puddle but she jumps in anyway. (Because she's Ladybug Girl!)[return][return]But overall, the text felt too long and meandering. I know it could have been edited down to the real meat of th...more
It's about a preschool girl who likes to dress up and there's even a doll you can get to go with the book. In the inside cover, our heroine Lulu is dressed up in all styles of costumes (ballerina, astronaut, princess, etc.), but she finally settles on the superhero Ladybug Girl. As a superhero, Lulu can achieve all kinds of extraordinary feats like splashing through puddles, walking across fallen logs, or counting the number of L's on the bookshelves (Lulu can't read yet). Probably her most amaz...more
Enjoyed reading this one with my oldest, who is now 5, but really looking forward to reading it with my youngest, when she's a bit older. There's almost 4 years between the two, so I think we'll be seeing some of this situation in our house.
It communicates some excellent messages to kids: spunky adventurous girl who isn't afraid of outside-type play (or sharks = ), every girl can be a superhero!, and that the difference between being 'bored' and having fun is all in your attitude.

Having enjoyed the 'sequel' so much (Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy), we got this one from the library. Lulu establishes her Ladybug Girl alter-ego in this story, which highlights how a good imagination (and a trusty dog - Bingo) can lead to lots of fun and independent adventures. When you read it to your child, point out how Lulu and Bingo have similar poses and facial expressions on most of the pages. They're in this together! We also enjoyed the different costumes she wears on the end pages -...more
Lulu is a free-spirited young girl in her ladybug costume looking for something to do. Mama and Papa are busy and tell her to go make her own fun. She asks her brother if she can play baseball with him and his friends, but he says “No, you’re too little.” Ladybug girl is sad, but only for a little bit. Bingo her trusty dog leads her outside, and there Ladybug Girl makes her own fun rescuing ants, repairing a fort, walking along a fallen log without falling. What's That??? Up in the sky!!! Is it a bird?? Is it a plan??? Nope, It's Ladybug girl and her trusty hound dog Bingo... Superman doesn't have anything on Ladybug girl. She's quite a unique little girl, nothing can stand in her way nor hold her back when she's ready to have some fun. When your bored you can always count on Ladybug Girl and Bingo to come to the rescue.

First, let me say that I LOVE the illustrations. They are SO adorable and completely convey Ladybug Girl's spunky, creative personality. And, yet... the story just feel flat for me. I would have almost rather there been no words so I could create my own. A few passages were quite pretty and fun, but overall, I felt annoyed that none of the characters really worked through their interpersonal problems. Ladybug Girl finds an adventurous, imaginative way to resolve her boredom, but her squabble wit...more
I think every little girl would want to be Ladybug Girl. She is fearless, friendly, and fun. But on this particular day she is bored, and no one seems to want to lay with her. Mom and Dad are busy and her brother thinks she is too little, so the only one who is left is Bingo the dog. Although her room is full of toys none of them seem to be of any interest.
They both head out to the back yard, to see what they can do to break the boredom.

Mommy's review from 12/14/11 -
Like at least one of my friends I enjoyed the illustrations in Ladybug Girl much more than the story itself. I'm not saying the story is bad, or boring, that's the not the case. It's just not one I'll remember or recommend.
There were a few times where it could have gotten boring fast if the book were any longer but with this length it was okay.
The illustrations are an entirely different matter. The look on the dogs face, which matched the girls looks, was priceless...more

My girls received this for Christmas and after I read it to them for the first time my older daughter asked if we could take it back and get another book. The illustrations are lovely but the storyline is frankly boring. I suspect that this is a book that more adults will love because of its messages about nature, boredom, and girl power. However, it is just not an interesting story that will capture the imagination of children in my humble opinion. The three stars are solely for the illustratio...more
this is a story about a girl in a ladybug- looking dress that goes about her day as ladybug girl. she tries to play baseball with her brother and his friends but he says she’s too small, which kind of makes her a bit mad, so she goes about whimsical little adventures of her own because she is ladybug girl! and is not small at all. the girl is kind of free spirited and imaginative so it’s fun reading about her. it isn’t the best ‘free spirited’ children’s book i’ve read, but it’s decently done an...more
Soman, David. Ladybug Girl. (2008)
Annotation: Lulu, the ladybug girl, must find something to keep herself entertained while her parents clean around the house. Her brother won't let her play with them because she's too little, so Lulu does adventurous things that prove to her that she is not too little.
Theme: adventure, independence, family, frindship
Way to use with children: You could talk to your students about things theey are too little for and talk about the things that they can do like big...more

I think what really matters in a children's book is the lesson children get from it. Our granddaughter loves these books and has learned to be self assured from it! A few months ago, I made a Ladybug Girl costume for her ans she was wearing it constantly. She was wearing the boots and went to get into their van and even though she has never been able to get the door open by herself before, she tried it. It opened right up, and she said, "Ladybug Girl can do anything"! What a lesson to learn, tha...more
I enjoyed this cute story about a girl named Lulu. It’s a good read aloud, with bright illustrations. I particularly like the passion ad adventurous side this young main character has. She becomes ‘ladybug girl!’ She moves rocks for little ants. She plays in a pond and runs from sharks. She plays in the woods on trees. She uses her imagination. It’s nice to see a young girl playing outside in nature and exploring. It’s a positive message for all children they can be imaginative and resourceful,...more
Lulu's costume collection must be the envy of all small girls (my poor girls have no dress ups!). Make sure and pay close attention to the dog's funny expressions.
This had a great message that I can use as an adult. Sometimes you want to be doing something else. Sometimes you envy someone for what they've got or haven't got. Great is the moment when you suddenly realize that your lot in life is just as it should be, you sink back and relax into it. Gone is the angst, the fretting. Life is good.

We've read several stories in the Ladybug Girl series by David Soman and Jacky Davis. The narrative is entertaining and the illustrations are fabulous. Our girls are starting to grow out of these stories, but we still enjoyed reading this story together.
