This book picks up immediately where Dragonsong left off. Menolly is now a student at Harper Hall. As such, the book deftly explores the experiences of a child learning the ropes in an unfamiliar school (and new home). This is a classic story of adolescent coming of age. There are the politics of cliques, the fear of strict teachers and the very beginnings of a girl learning that her gift for music is a gift. As a central piece in a trilogy ought to be, this book is very much a transitional...more

This book follows Dragonsong in a McCaffrey trilogy about Menolly, an adolescent girl. It was interesting to follow the character as she moved away from her own community, where her gifts were not only discouraged, but were a source of embarrassment for her family. While she now lives in a community that could not prize her talent more highly, it takes her a while to begin to truly accept (in her heart and her head) that her gifts are in fact gifts, not burdens. Reading it made me acutely awa...more

This book is about a girl name Menolly. She was in the previous book and is in this one too. She has just become a apprentice from the Harper Hall where all the musicians attend. Menolly starts to play musics just like all the other musicians in Harper hall. As Menolly begins to live her life as it is she finds out that her life has a lot more surprising turns ahead. She finds her self all wrapped up with the fire-lizard business and found a egg of the fire-lizard. As the fire-lizard begins to h...more

Old school fantasy, and by old school I mean the first time I read it I was six years old. My dad really loves these books. They're not great, but the nostalgia factor is pretty strong, and the Harper Hall books (or at least the original trilogy of them) are uniformly better than the other Pern novels. (Excepting, of course, Dragonflight, her first.)

Menolly's the strong female character that every young girl should aspire to be, battling social norms to become the first female Harper. She a...more

Another wonderful book in the Harper Hall Trilogy, read to my sixth-grade class by my forever-wonderful English teacher Mrs. T. This one feels a little more cringe-worthy than the first, or at least it did when I was a lonely kid who had trouble making friends in a school full of mean snobs, listening to a story about a lonely girl who had trouble making friends in a school full of mean snobs. Does it sound like I identified with the main character much? Believe me, the idea of having nine incre...more

Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums got me away from horror fiction and into fantasy. I haven't remained a huge McCaffrey fan, but there will always be a special place in my heart for this trilogy.

What middle-school girl doesn't feel like she's all alone and different from everyone else? It was great to get lost for a few hours with Menolly, who was able to take care of herself and do things that nobody thought possible. When I was in seventh grade, I so wanted to be her, live o...more

This is another coming of age book with the protagonist a young girl who is both brave and unconventional. The story is more traditional of fantasy involving dragons and other components unique to the story such as the deadly "thread" that falls from the sky. Menolly is a strong, willful young woman. She struggles with inter-personal relationships and feels like she doesn't fit in. She has trouble with the other girls at the school she is going to. This is a good read for any young wom...more

Menolly arrives at the Harper Hall to find she still faces obstacles to her being a woman harper. But her talent, and her fire lizards, win her new friends, champions, and the respect she deserves as a musician. Excellent sequel to Dragonsong. An inspiring book for girls facing their own obstacles.
I love the part where she gets to pick out a gitar to use, and she chooses the one the Masterharper had made, impressing Master Jerint. I always picture Master Shonagar as looking like Orson ...more

I really enjoy the first 2 books in the Harper Hall Trilogy. I really enjoy the Melody storyline. This is another book in the Dragonriders of Pern books. Some of the later books get into some homosexual references, which I don't enjoy reading about. It is a side element and not a main plot line. But because of this I would caution the young reader from getting into this series, until they can clearly think through this issue.

This is the story of my favorite single character from the Dragonrider series. Why Menolly is my favorite, is due to this book. Her story makes her the most likable, inspirational, and sympathetic character of all Anne McCaffrey's books. This is saying alot because McCaffrey's books are usually good because of her character development.

2nd book in the "Harper Hall" trilogy, Menolly is a new apprentice at the Harper Hall, the center of musical knowledge in all of Pern. She arrives injured and impoverished, but with a wealth untold in her musical talent and the friendship of Pern's enchanting, magical creatures, the Fire Lizards. Another wonderful book!

I first read this book in high school and it's become a comfort read for me ever since. There's something incredibly sincere and wonderful about Menolly's character that makes you root for her in every way. She may at times seem too modest or too oblivious of her talent, but it's definitely one of her charms.

Second book of the Harper Hall trilogy.

I've only read it a few times, but I enjoyed following Menolly's adventure.

The best part about this book is how the time frame is parrallel to Dragonquest, which is one of my favorite of the series, so I get to see the same events from different points of view.

My favorite aunt gave me copies of Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums when I was about 14. They are phenomenal books, but of the three, I think the second one was my favorite. I just finished re-reading them and I'd so like to be a harper with my own fire lizard. One of my cornerstone books.

Probably my favorite of the trilogy. For no apparent reason, I really like the part where she gets into a fist-fight with the mean girl and her boyfriend and they get in trouble for having started it and just for being mean in the first place.

But all the mentions of "bubbly pies" make me hungry.

Of the Harper Hall Trilogy, this is my favorite of the three. Unlike the first one, it is much more interactive as Menolly arrives at the Harper Hall and, as the first female harper in a long time, endures much before finally settling in. One of my favorite book to re-read.

I can't help loving this book. To be honest I've read it so many times I remember whole passages. Like macaroni and cheese, it's a great comfort food I imprinted on when I was young.

I also remember when I thought Anne McCaffrey was the greatest living writer. He he he.

Complete guilty pleasure. I re-read the entire Harper Hall Trilogy (and then usually All the Weyrs of Pern) whenever I am feeling frustrated with work & life. If Menolly and Jaxom can get through things, I can also...

This series is so awesome and feels so real. The short stories enable you to get a different view of the world I've come to love so much.

Great way to catch the attention of new readers who may be wary of series.

One of my all-time favorites. Love the world of Pern and this book (while also being very clean, unlike some of the others) also combines it with another passion of mine: music! I read it at least once a year.
