I feel like I could copy and paste one of my reviews from any of the last several books in the series and it would still detail how I feel about this particular book completely. Despite this being the seventh book in the series, the writing and characterization have failed to develop. I'm not saying that its horrible or the worst series I've ever read or anything, but the issues that I do have with it haven't improved in the slightest. I believe this particular book actually may have even gone ...more

As this book fits perfectly into the series it is very satisfying. Since the book is about Charlie being as curious as ever, stumbling into a huge problem when he has a power to go through paintings. Where as this time he traveled to an unknown destination through a picture that his aunt recently put in the basement. Unknowingly, his aunt and other people of a force are grouping together to get ride of Charlie and his friends. I truly enjoyed this book since throughout the entire book it is ...more

So I really loved this book. It only takes place during one maybe two weeks of school for Charlie. Charlie is lured into a painting with the Shadow. Runner Bean is also lured for a different reason. Charlie gets out but Runner doesn't. He has to rescure Runner and Billy who also gets lured into the painting. It was so fun to read I did it in one day. If you love to read fun this book is it.

Book seven in the Charlie Bone series.

The evil enchanter Count Harken is back, and his power is drawing more and more of his allies to the city. As the balance of power shifts in favor of the Red King's not-so-nice descendents, Charlie fights to save one of his ancestors, as well as Runner Bean and Billy Raven from a painting unlike anything Charlie has ever seen before.

Sometimes I get teary eyed when I see dogs in paintings, and wonder if they might be trapped as well.

This one is great, you can sense that the end of the series is coming, and it'll be crazy to see how she ends it.

This book was okay but not as good as the other books in the series and the only reason I stuck with this book is because I just wanted to finish the series.

This was a decent installment in the Charlie Bone series. Mayhem ensues and many of the characters are in peril. Can Charlie save Billy and Runner Bean? Can he save himself?

What a nice ending with all of the lose ends tied up and even Billy got a new home.

3.5 stars. Audiobook. My biggest problem with this book is that evil seems to win at every turn. And even loyalty and friendship seem to be tried among the good guys.

Likes:
* Family Tree and summary of characters and abilities in the front of the book (which you miss in the audiobook)
* Flames - "cats Ares (yellow), Sagittarius (copper) & of course, Leo (orange)

What I liked:
-Charlie Bone. Even though he is very annoying sometimes and he doesn’t stop and think about what’s going to happen when he does something, I can’t help but root for him to come out on top. I like Charlie, and I want him to succeed in defeating the bad guys, and that’s a good thing. Charlie just wants to help everybody, despite the dangers to himself, and he seems like a very dependable kid.
-Tancred. He is a favorite of mine—I love his powers, his attitude, and even his unique name.

Charlie Bone believes he is a normal ten year old English boy, but when he discovers that he can hear conversations taking place in the photographs around him, his domineering Grandmother Bone sends him off to attend Bloors Academy for Gifted Children. While she hopes he has inherited his magical abilities from the evil side of the family, Charlie befriends the small group of descendents of The Red King trying to do good in the world. There's Lysander

Can you imagine somewhere where certain people had extraordinary powers? In the book Charlie Bone and the Shadow, where this story takes place, some people do have special powers. I read the book Charlie Bone and the Shadow and it is a great story. This story is written by Jenny Nimmo and is the seventh book in a series.

In this story an evil enchanter comes back after being defeated and banished once. Throughout most of the story is in a painting. Any body he wants he lures them down and sucks

At least not everything was resolved in this book and some things were left for the next one. The characters still do things that people would never do, the plot is still overly predictable, but it feels like they're getting better as they go. Since there's only one left, they probably aren't ever going to be great, but they're definitely okay.

I liked this book much more than I thought I would. I have always enjoyed Jenny Nimmo's books, particularly the Magician series. The Children of the Red King series has been on and off, but this volume was way better than the previous one, as there is more action taking place.

Charlie Bone is once again facing danger when his awful Grandma Bone brings a mysterious painting into their home and deposits it in their cellar, under lock and key. Knowing full well that Charlie has the power to travel i

Not the best in the series, but definitely better than Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors. I was disheartened about the several chapters where Charlie has to fill in other characters about what has been happening since they weren't with him when it happened. It almost felt like review since you rarely learned something you hadn't already known.
Aside from that though, not a bad book. I really liked it. I almost gave this book a 3 star rating because of said tedious thing above.

#7 Children of the Red King YA fantasy series. Charlie and his endowed friends, all descendents of the fabled Red King, all attendees of Bloor's Academy, are once again under attack by the nasty side of the family tree. Charlie's parents are still away on their extended second honeymoon, and Charlie's nasty Grandma Bone brings a wrapped package into the basement, knowing that Charlie's curiosity will get the better of him, and it does--he and his friend Benjamin's dog Runner Bean are sucked into ...more

I have loved this series so far, so I don't know if it is just this title, or what. But the stories are starting to seem a little repetitive. Sure, the actual problem is new, but poor Charlie solves it in a predictable way (for those who have read the other books), and I was really bothered, for the first time, by the lack of helping adults in this book. Maybe because Charlie finally has his father back, but his parents, intent on a "second honeymoon" manage to be gone for the entire book. ...more

For me, this was the most suspenseful, dramatic volume of the series thus far. Charlie found himself in constant perilous situations, some much more severe than those in past books, and during such times, he becomes truly powerless and helpless and reaps the consequences of his involvement with and his battle against the Bloor family. Though I wish that Charlie's parents would cut their second honeymoon short in order to be home to protect their son, I realize that it is their very absence that ...more

Another good one from Jenny Nimmo. I am sorry that Simon Russell Beale is no longer narrating the audiobooks. Simon Jones just doesn't do some of the voices right!

Charlie and his friends have another encounter with the evil enchanter, Count Harkan. The enchanter, still trapped in Badlock, since the mirror of Amarate was broken will do anything to travel back, including kidnapping. So, when a painting of Badlock arrives at number 9 and Charlie's curiosity gets the better of him, instead of just t

I really liked the fiction book, Charlie Bone and the Shadow. The main characters are Charlie Bone, Emma Tolly, Tancred Torsson, Lasinder Sage, Olivia Vertigo, Dagbert Endless, Dorcas Loom, Titana Tilpin, Paton Yewbeam, Erick Shellhorn, Billy Raven, Harken the enchanter, Ountus Yewbeam, and finally Runner Bean (dog). Although this is a long list they all played a very big part in the book. Charlie Bone is set mostly in the present, but it is also set 900 years ago. The book's setting is in a ...more

SLJ review:

Gr 5-8-Charlie Bone is once again pitted against Count Harken, aka The Shadow, in Jenny Nimmo's seventh book (Orchard Books, 2008) in the Children of the Red King series. Very little background information is provided, so listeners must be familiar with the previous titles in order to follow the extended cast of characters and their endowments (magical talents). Charlie has the ability to travel into portraits, which sparks a feud when his best friend's dog is captured by a painting t
