I LOLed reading this book. Not because the author insists on calling penises manroots, or that there is cheaply depicted sex every eight pages. No, I giggled uncontrollably because the writing itself is so bad. Her phrasing, her dialogue, her word-choice, the hackneyed plot...it is all terrible. It's like the author ran the story through a Fantasy Novel Generator set to an 11 year old's writing ability and submitted it for publishing.

Okay, I knew what I was getting into here. I was looking for a silly book, and I've read Skye O'Malley, so I really can't say I thought this was going to be a great read, but part of me still held out hope that this would be an entertaining diversion. No such luck. While this book had some moments of over-the-top fantasy adventure fun and some decent world-building, it was so unbelievably repetitive that I couldn't wait for it to end. I have read such books before, but this one took it to a whol...more
I have but one thing to say about this book: Yay! While I don’t devour bodice rippers at the rate I once did, I still enjoy a good historical romance from time to time, and while I haven’t read all of Small’s work, I have liked everything I’ve read. When I saw that she was trying her hand at a fantasy series, I decided I wanted in, and was well rewarded for it.

This book was so awful, I can't even, oh my god
Here is a short list as to why:
-excessive use of "manroot" and other awful euphemisms
-Lara continually brought up her "destiny" to the point I wanted to shoot myself
-basically, there was no plot and it droned on and on for 500+ pages of unnecessary bullshit.
-there's no depth to the characters at all
-it's ridiculous
-Lara is what rp'ers would refer to as a "godmod" character - someone who basically has no flaws and is perfection and makes the whole da...more

Lara has been sold into slavery by her father. For most young women in the world of Hetar, this is a disaster that brings about nothing but fear and sorrow. For Lara however it is but the very beginning of her adventure.
Half human, half faerie, Lara is stunningly beautiful and willful as well. Her faerie protector guides her in finding her destiny which involves a series of great adventures and great lovers. Finally reaching the Outlands, Lara comes to realize her destiny is to aid the people sh...more

This has to be the worst book I have ever read in my life!!!! I had never read a Bertrice Small book before and I probably never will again, although I am sure she has written some good books. The only reason I read the whole thing was because I believed it had some potential because there were some really cool ideas. However the constant use of the word "manroot" and Lara's constant obsession and over re-iteration of her "destiny" was very tiresome and made me want to fling the book across the...more
Why did I hate this book so much? One word sums it up: manroot. Possibly the worst euphemism that I have ever been unlucky enough to read. I swear the sex scenes are so unsexy, it almost ruined my actual sex life.
A little plot summary: Lara's father and stepmother sell her into slavery so he can buy nice clothes and armor so he can try out to be a knight. Lara is cool with this, because they are poor and she is the only thing of value that her dad has. Lara's mother is a fairy, who seduced her...more

If you haven't read this book, then don't read this review! lol I really enjoyed this book at the beginning but later on, I started to get annoyed. Lara just kept telling everyone her story and it came off boastful and repetitive. When she enters the Outlands, she's too showy. She steps up and has the answers for everything. Things fell into place too neatly and it seemed only Lara was the one who could save everyone. Like everyone else wasn't smart enough. I was annoyed with how parts of the bo...more
When I was in high school I read "A Love for All time". I enjoyed that, though it was too long. My mom old me I couldn't read it until I was older...well, that made me want to read it All the more. Haha. I just found out that book was written not too long ago and I had to read it.
I am even more intrigued by the supernaturalness of this book. Fairies and giants, which I have become enamored with recently. I think this book was better than the one I read in high school. I don't know if it's becaus...more

Even though I love this author this story was a little to far fetched for me. I like to stick more to her historical romances.
For the most part I really liked this book. I thought it was a very ordinal story and I loved Lara. She wasn't the typical heroine at all. She was very practical and I loved her view of the world even though sometimes it was a bit harsh. My only real problem with this book was that there is so much repetition. Lara kept repeating her story to everyone she met and we had to hear of it each time. It got very tiresome very quickly. Betrice Small also for some reason loves the word manroot and she u...more
I'll say this for this book- I never imagined it possible to use the word "manroot" so frequently. The first 200 pages or so were at least entertaining, in that "wow this is so bad I can't believe it got published" kind of way. And then it lost even the entertainment factor and just became awful. The characters are SO flat. Lara is probably the biggest Mary Sue of all time and I just hated her. The only character I actually was intrugued by was Kaliq and his appearance was brief. I picked this u...more
Manroot. MAAAANROOOOT. That word makes me simultaneously roll my eyes and snigger (I know, not a pretty picture).
The story premise is interesting. The world building had promise. The book quickly goes downhill, however, as you go through the rather flat characters and uninspired battle scenes. In several parts of the book i felt that the dialogue was written by a student forced into taking an "intro to creative writing" class -- very obvious and elementary, with lots of tell and very little s...more
When Lara is 15 years old she’s sold into slavery to finance her father’s ambitions to become a Crusader Knight. But Lara is ok with this – because…well…because otherwise she would have to be a normal person and there might have to be emotions. Which would get in the way of the vast quantities of sex. So instead of pitching a hissy fit at being sold into sexual slavery in the interest of her father's ridiculous career, we spend 60-75 pages SEWING! Yes, sewing for Lara’s father because Lara is th...more
well from the description and cover, i was ezpecting more from this book. While the basic storyline was well thought out, and the description on the lands good, i was left not so happy. The character, Lara, is the protagonist, however her emotions are not described well. They are briefly brushed over rather than expressive, and the book is to quick in the sense that because of its lack of detail in certain things, it brushes through months at a time in extreme ease.
I enjoyed this book mainly because the author wasn't afraid to screw the main character over. Lara starts off having a pretty simple life until her father sales her for his own gain, and even though Lara is ok with this unfortunnate turn of events things start to get worse. But Lara takes it all in stride. This process helps her character development tremendously, and I always appreciate some good character development. Everyone cant start off being awsome. I cant say I like the direction the st...more
I was shocked at how good this series turned out to be. It has many creative mystical beings. It is an adult read containing graphic sexual situations. Lara's story is unexpected. Some of her challenges were difficult to read but Ms. Small built new layers to Lara's personality and gave her an inner strength to cope and grow. Excellently written.
Bertrice Small's books are hit or miss with me. This book, like many of her others, is very sexual. The story would have been good if I could have just really gotten into it. I will admit now I only read about 3/4 of the book and I just could not force myself to continue reading. It was okay but it wasn't really for me.
When I saw these were fantasy/romance books I didn't think I would like them.
But I love this first book very much. Lara reminds me a lot of Skye in many ways.
Like Skye she is strong willed but in another way very innocent.
It as a real nice pace to it. Couldn't put it down wanted to see what was going to happen.

I really enjoyed this book. I completely fell in love with Lara, just like how every other character in the book had. Hetar is such a magical world that really invites you in. Small is an excellent writer, and I cannot wait to read what is next in store for Lara. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a romantic, and at times erotic, action filled fantasy story.

Lara didn't take the place of Skye O'Malley. Kinda slow story to get into, but I guess it was interesting enough for me to finish it! lol! Have the 2nd in the series....maybe someday.
It's okay. But let me tell you what makes me hate this book. I did read this book (well, not finished it) because my office mate told me that it was a good read and I will really like it. But unfortunately, it's not engrossing. It's very typical. It doesn't suits me.
The only reason why I stopped reading is:
They sewed all the sixty-four pages of this book.
