Absolutely the very best that I have read from Tracie Peterson so far. "A Promise to Believe In" is creative, moving, funny, adventurous, and endearing. I just loved it. It had all of the elements that I have come to love of historical novels from Tracie Peterson.

In many historicals, a reader can find a novel telling the story of three characters, in this case sisters, and then the next two books in the trilogy will continue the story of a different character. This is the ...more

The story follows the Gallatin sisters, although it mostly focuses on Gwen.
Gwen feels as though she has been cursed. Every person that she has let herself get close to has died. She's lost her mother, aunt, father and husband. She is determined not to let anyone else get close to her for fear that she will cause their death too!
This story begins immediately following the death of their beloved father. The 3 sisters are left on their own in the wild west to continue running a stage stop...more

I can't wait for the next book in this series to come out. I have not been able to put it down.

Though not spectacularly or breath-takingly written, it was none the less a rewarding book filled with its own bouquet all the same; the lightning-strike connections, truth behind the simple words, and the thought provoking questions that each of us, at some point throughout our lives, ask ourselves, God, and seemingly the air that echoes back with no answer, but only more doubt, confusion, or sense of helplessness give this tale more than a grain of truth, but true grit. This book draws togethe...more

I'd probably give this a 3.5, but since that isn't an option I went with 4 stars since I did enjoy the story overall.

The story begins with the tragic death of Gwen, Beth and Lacy’s father. Each sister handles the passing in her own way but for Lacy she is set on vengeance. A great deal of the story focused on Lacy and her need for uncovering what really happened. I had a few suspicions but ended up being kind of disappointed with the whole thing. I understand the need to forgive, but...more

This story is set in the mountains of Montana in 1879 where three sisters, Gwen, Lacy and Beth, help their father operate a roadhouse. This book is the first in the series called Brides of Gallatin County and centers around the oldest daughter Gwen. You do learn enough about the other sisters to look forward to reading about their lives in the next books.

Gwen’s life has been surrounded by death and she lives her life thinking she is cursed. As the story moves along you find her lear...more

An enjoyable inspirational novel. I did have some issues with Gwen though. Here she is the oldest who tried to nurse her mother when she had a baby. Both the mom and the baby died and Gwen has been this tough girl in charge. All these bad things happen to her which she blames herself for but makes it through them. Her attitude was sometimes conflicting when someone was hurt like Ellie and she took charge and sewed her up but there are other times where she just stands there while some bad h...more

After the death of their father, 3 sisters are left to run a hotel/stage stop in rural Montana. One of the sisters is a widow, and the arrival of her late husband's brother causes turmoil in their household. 2 of the sisters are also dealing with serious emotional baggage.

I really wish I could have given this book 2 1/2 stars. The story was nice and well written, but sometimes 2 of the sisters drove me crazy because of their stubbornness and refusal to see other points of view. P...more

I enjoyed this book, my first by this author. I know I will complete this series, as the time period and locale are among my favorites: the American West, late 19th century. I love that the characters are all flawed in one way or another, but work at improving upon those undesirable traits while also reaching out to those around them who are in need, regardless of social class or other distinctions. So far, I am impressed with Ms. Peterson's writing and looking forward to reading more of her...more

The Gallatin sisters are women of determination, heart and a courage that could match anyone in Montana. After the death of their father, Gwen, Beth and Lacy must come together to survive the wild territory of Montana on their own. When a stranger arrives at the Gallatin doorstep with more cause for pain and distraction, will the sisters be able to pull together to survive?

I read this novel in a week, picking it up whenever I had a spare moment or two. I found it to be a very fun no...more

I was really disappointed. The cover of the book is beautiful but dont let that fool you. There was absolutely no meat to the book. The author failed to draw the reader into the story with setting description and character depth. I really wanted the book to get better and I gave it a chance by reading 100 pages into it but eventually I quit. She tried to tell instead of show. The synopsis on the back sounded great but in the end the story was so light it was like drinking air.

This is the first of three books, "brides of gallatin county". I bought the first at a garage sale, then had to read the next two, and purchased them at a second hand book store. The three sisters are so different in every way but their love for each other and the support they show each other through their triels, makes me wish I had more sisters. I really enjoy this kind of book, and think that Tracie Peterson is a great story teller.

I was instantly part of this story - it's funny, sad, thoughtful and all around fabulous. AND - my first Bethany book that finished the first story in the first book of the trilogy! Fantastic. I only wish Rafe hadn't been a one dimensional villain - he was too far over the top. And I can't imagine that what happened to Ellie would have been okay with Dave and the sheriff, honestly. I hear he's less cardboard in book three, but I wish he'd started out that way.

I really enjoyed the book. The picture on the cover was misleading - it looks like a modern women not someone in the late 1800's....but it had aspects of historical fiction and multi-facets that were very enjoying. I have a 13 year old daughter and I have recommended she read it as well. It is appropriate for a younger reader which isn't always easy to do.

Three and a half stars.
Believe it or not, I've never read any of Tracie Peterson's novels until now. Overall, it's a good trilogy, but for all that I've heard about Tracie Peterson ... she's alright. I'll probably read more books by her, but she hasn't hit my "favorite authors" list yet. (Will finish review later).

I enjoyed a book in this similar genre that a friend recommended so I thought I'd try this author. While it's not a bad book, it's not particularly well-written, it's very predictable, lacking in great dialogues, just not very well-done. I don't think I'll read more than this series of "The Brides of Gallatin County."

Very good Loved this triligy--well I haven't read the second one yet, but very good. About 3 women in the pioneer days who end up without their dad and have to run a bording house by themselves. Each woman meets a christian man and eventually they all get married.
Christina
This looked like a good, new book at the library, and I didn't have too much time to look- so, I got it. It had a fun little story line, and I liked that even though it was a Christian novel, it didn't preach too much. It was a little same-old, though.
Patti
Loved this whole series... I couldn't put them down. Strong women who make it on their own in the "Wild West" after their father dies. They stick together and each book highlights one of the three sisters--their growth, their relationships and their futures.

I really like Tracie Peterson. This was a fun series to read about three sisters. All of her books make me want to visit the places she writes about. Some of here series have a similar feel to them but they are all great and lots of historical aspects.
Cynthia
This was a great book about three sisters and their relationship with each other and with how we see ourselves. I liked the setting in Montana and the mystery that was involved as well as the idea of being cursed. The author did a great job of incorporating the gospel through the point of being cursed. I hope that there is another one in this series:)
Tara
This was okay for light reading. It was perfect for reading in waiting rooms, etc. when there were lots of distractions. It didn't require my full attention and was a simple, straightforward feel-good story with a Christian theme.
Megan
Maybe this book should be labelled junior fiction. The story was alright but not very deep! However, I'll still likely finish reading the series because I like to finish them!
My least favorite of Peterson's works.....

A Promise to Believe In by Tracie Peterson is the first book in the Brides of Gallatin County series. Tracie Peterson is a well known inspirational fiction author and this series is one of her most popular.
Jackie

This book is in a series. It is ok, I thought the character was a bit weak as opposed to the other two in the next two books. I did not think the book boring just not as interesting as the other two.
Christine
This is book 1 of 3. I loved how each book is narrated by a different sister. While you have a good idea of how each book will end, you are very uncertain of what will happen in the middle. I went from one book to the next and would read them again.

Book 1 in the Brides of Gallatin County series. Very good Christian western romance, set in Montana.

The only problem I had with the book is that I'm not a fan of a woman marrying one brother and then marrying another brother. I know this was common practice back in the day but I found it to be a little unsavory.

This book was okay... somewhat boring and slow-paced, and I didn't really connect with any of the characters. I'd planned on reading the entire trilogy, but I won't be picking up the next book any time soon, if ever.
Stacey
I like to read books that take place in an area that I will be traveling to, and this book take place in Montana where I was going to be traveling through so I pick it up. It was interesting enough for me to want to finish it, and I am thinking that my girls will enjoy this even if there are no wizards named Harry or a vampire named Edward in it!
