He's bearded, angry, highly trained, and has a job to do.
She's the damsel in distress who's smarter than she looks, and doesn't want anyone's help.
Could it be they both need something neither will admit to? Fate fueled by the laws of attraction may just decide for them.

A really enjoyable read about a wounded warrior. And, the cover is super sexy! :0)

Duke is ex-military and has been working as an FBI agent. He’s handsome, tough, and has a ‘take no prisoners’ attitude.

Rayanne is self-sufficient and now finds herself in a situation where her independence won’t help her.

When Duke is “punished” for so many violent actions against perps, he finds himself in charge of the latest Witness Protection detail, Rayanne. Their first encounter was a clash of wills. He was upset with his babysitting assignment and she’s determined not to let the a-hole age

Pretty good romantic suspense. Duke was such an ass that it made the insta-love thing feel off even for me. I felt both characters could have used a little more depth but overall, the plot was good and I read it in one sitting!

C.J. Pinard is a fan and author of bad-boy romances, and her Imperfect Heroes series is no different. ABOVE PROTECTION is the first book of the series, with novella Antihero as it’s prequel. If a bearded, muscular Neanderthal ex-Marine, whose protective hands you are in, but who can be as cold as ice one minute and as HOT as fire the next floats your boat then you’re in for a wild adventure of lust and action!

Excitingly told from both points of view, Above Protection is a quick-paced, contempora

Rayanne has been put into a very disturbing situation. The two men she has worked for and considers family are being charged with various crimes but the worst is murder for hire. She doesn’t want to testify against the men she considers her family and has no idea why anyone would think she would know anything about the charges or why this is happening. Now, her life is in danger and she is being taken from her life and thrown into the witness protection program

There were too many issues. Research is important. Quite frankly the author makes herself sound a bit dumb with some of her mistakes. (I'm sure she's a great, smart gal. Just saying the lack of knowledge/research makes her seem less than capable.) An FBI agent/USMC vet who trained at Quantico. Yet has never been to Virginia? (Quantico is in Virginia.) The hero's younger brother (who should be 27) is "as high a rank you can get as an enlisted soldier." Yet that's an impossibility. He'd bee

The one thing I like about this series it will show heroes as they are, people that do hero stuff but are also individuals. Anyone can be one but only a few step up to the plate especially when it is time. There is also different kinds, different ways. This author has the magic to bring us heroes that would be right next to us if we look close enough and the ones in the novels we would like to claim as ours. Duke thinks he is getting short end of a stick but boy oh boy he doesn't know nothing yet ...more

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, suspense, twists & turns, and heartbreak.

This is Rayanne and Duke’s story. Rayanne is put in protection custody. Duke is the protector. Neither wants to worry about the protection. Both will complicate the protection detail. He thinks he is wasting his time. She thinks it’s a pain. Can they work together for the protection and figure out what needs to happen before it’s too late? Can one babysitting duty turn into a forever?

Above Protection is book number 1 to the Imperfect Heroes Series. I have to say what a way to start the series. I love the excerpt to this book with I first read it. I have read similar situations in other books but was not impressed with them. This book held me captive throughout the entire book. I thought it was great. This was also the first time to read a book by C.J. Pinard and ill tell you what i found a new author to continue reading.

The two people in the Imperfect Heroes series are exactly that...imperfect but worth the effort. Duke, a former military hero now turned FBI agent has seen all the bad the world has to offer and well he's maybe a little tattered from the battles he's fought. He lives with an injury that leaves him surly, a "tiny" anger management problem, and bruises on his knuckles and his heart. With his possibility of his arrests being under investigation for excessive force, Duke is assigned a punis

Brand new author. Brand new series. Suspense. Action. Twists. Turns. Steam. Angry bearded man. Romance. Standalone. What more could you ask for in a romance novel? Well C.J. Pinard gives her readers a intriguing and edgy book that will keep you on your toes and make you quite breathless at times. She gives us a sexy alpha hero that we love to hate and hate to love.

Distressing- yes
The subpoena says that she is a witness against her bosses.
She loved her job. She may have hated some of the clients, but she loved her job. There must be some mistake because her bosses would never do something like this.

Or so she thought, until the threatening phone calls started?

It seems the only way to get protection is to testify against her bosses about something she didn't realize was happening. It's that or run, which wasn't ha

This book was refreshing to say the least, what sane woman could possible not love a dominant sexy alpha ex military/FBI agent. There were plenty of hot and steamy moments through out this book but I was always on the edge of my seat due to the suspense and in tense writing from the author

This story about two people from two very different lives coming together because of a situation neither of them wanted to be in, is made exciting by the authors use of excitement, humour, lust, drama and just the right amount of action.

The lead man in this story is just the right kind of damaged. He isn't too far gone that you can't love him. His bearded face and stunning body would be hard for me to pass up on any give

If you enjoy bad-boy romances and badass ex-Marines, then Above Protection is just the book for you.

Pinard has written an intriguing book full of twists, turns and action - both the suspenseful type and the steamy. Above Protection is Rayanne and Duke's story. Rayanne has just entered the Witness Protection program because someone is after her and wants to see her dead.

I was really looking forward to this book, I loved the idea of neither of the characters being what they seemed but I think it fell a little short.

Rayanne was put into witness protection and was lucky enough to get the not so charming Duke to be her guard. I liked Rayanne's character, she was sweet and relatable.

Duke was a complete and utter a$$hole, I couldn't see the appeal of his character at all. He had no soft edges and I hated how he treated Rayanne.

Duke: was in the Marine Corps and ended up with a war injury from shrapnel being imbedded in his leg. He then worked for the FBI as an agent who was heavy handed in dealing out restraint in those who he arrested. He was stubborn and angry but I loved him, to me he stood for all the right reasons and punished those who deserved it.

This was the first by C.J. Pinard that I have read and I really enjoyed it. Duke is an arrogant FBI agent that has some minor anger issues. He does what it takes to get the perp and what does it really matter if his ways may be a little unorthodox? His boss finally can't let his antics go so he puts him on witness protection the one thing most FBI agents despise. Duke is not a babysitter. He meets his first vic and feels she is just some priss. He never expects to feel the instant connection or ...more

Above Protection is a fun romance filled with action, suspense, humor, and heat... but that is par for the course with any C.J. Pinard book. Her books are full of heroes in uniform, and usually they are a little rough around the edges. Duke certainly fits this profile - FBI agent with a temper. Protecting a witness is not how he wants to spend his time, but he's in trouble at work. If he wants back in his boss's good side, Duke will make sure Rayanne lives to testify in court.

A 4.5 star read for me!

This was the first book that I read by CJ, and I absolutely loved it. It was a fun, easy read and a change of pace from some of the stories that I've read lately. I enjoyed the plot, because even though it's fiction, it wasn't far fetched. The story was believable with just the right amount of romance and suspense. I didn't care for the hero at first, because he seemed a little too cocky, but I changed my mind once I realized that Duke is just a bad boy with a hidden soft

So this was an ok read for me.

I loved Rayanne, who realized when she actually needed to ask for help instead of trying to act too tough and getting herself killed. Duke. Where the heck do I start here. To be honest, I felt he had a split personality disorder. The first half of the book, I seriously hated him, to the point I almost quit reading. He was a bitter @$$hole, who thought he was gods gift to everyone. He was prior military, but so immature on some levels. At 28 years old, I ex

I really enjoyed the story of Duke, the FBI agent, and Rayanne, the witness he's assigned to protect. I admit that I have a bit of a thing for bad boy/asshole heroes and Duke certainly fit the bill, while Rayanne was clever and funny, qualities I look for in a female lead. The book had a nice pace with events moving along fairly rapidly. There were a few lol movements, with a nice mix of life threatening situations and hot sex, though I would have liked to have seen a little more concrete threat ...more

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't a huge fan of Duke at first but he grew on me!

Rayanne has found herself in a position she never expected. She needs to go into witness protection. She doesn't even know why she's a target. She doesn't know anything. She also doesn't want to go. But she needs to and when she sees Duke she instantly hates him. He's a jerk! Can she survive ten days with him without killing him?

An amazing read from the fabulous author CJ Pinard.
We follow the developing romance of the broken ex Marine 'Duke' and the woman he's been forced to protect 'Rayanne'. As punishment for his hot-headedness Duke has been ordered to serve as 'babysitter' to Rayanne while she is under witness protection with a price on her head, waiting to testify at a really high profile case against her former bosses.... We follow them as Rayanne slowly begins to break through the steel walls Duke has in place to

I received this book early from the author. As I was reading there were many typos or small errors such as little words missing. I know it bugs me when books are like this, but like I said, I received an early copy so my hope is that when the book goes live there will not be nearly as many.

I give this book 3 1/2 stars.
