Mucumber McGee and the Lunch Lady's Liver
In a dismal old schoolhouse down by the sea, there was a young boy named Mucumber McGee. Lunch had begun and was nearly complete. Would there still be food for Mucumber to eat? There was nary a hot dog or even beef stew, only a plate full of brown, lumpy goo. Some decisions are often quite hard to make—should Mucumber really eat that liver cake?

Patrick Loehr was at this year’s Denver ComicFest. A really nice guy even asked about our Edible Raven T-shirts. My sister got a book of his illustrations and I got his children’s book, Mucumber McGee and the Lunch Lady’s Liver. I will confess I got it because of the back cover design with the upside down black umbrellas and the raven perched in the tree. Another Mucumber McGee classic. This book reminds me of my kids coming home from school and telling me about the food in the lunchroom.
Mucumber finds himself in a dilema and has to buck up the courage to choke down the lunch lady's latest concoction. He envisions what is to come after eating such a thing, but is pleasantly surprised.
I love this book, but hope lunch ladies will not start making liver cake, liver mousse, or whatever this thing is that Mucumber eats.

This volume teaches us to try new things, and also, not to judge a book by its cover. People, like the lunchlady, may seem scary at first, but until you get to know them better you'll be asuming all your life.

Edward Gorey redux, I'm afraid. Overly familiar text, unremarkable pictures, and rhymes that only barely work by the skin of their teeth. Not much to see here, folks. Move along, move along.
