RUDIN (1856) by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (1818-1883) tells the story of a character typical to Turgenev -- a "superfluous" man, weak of will, brimming with indecisive frustration -- and yet tormented by ideals. Rudin is made impotent by the dissonance of honoring the older generations while at the same time embracing the new bold epoch of pre-revolutionary Russia. The them ...more

Just fabulous! The modern sense of sarcastic insight that Twain brought into American literature, what Cervantes might have done for literature in general, what Vonnegut and Nabokov turned into a completed art, Turgenev introduced into the standard world of 19th century Russian characters and situations. The wit isn’t as quick as, say, Wilde, but Rudin is sharp, funny and an emotional commentary on wasted potential.

Our title character is not a hero. Despite all his charms--and you can’t deny he

Rudin is a highly educated, well-brought up man in his 30s living in Russia. He embodies the Superfluous Man popular in Russian literature: a man of high intelligence and ideals with no action. He is, essentially, all talk and incapable of following through with his thoughts and desires. He is a moocher, living off of the generosity of others. He is taken in by Darya Lasunsky, mother of 17-year-old beauty, Natalya. Rudin befriends Natalya, an equally intelligent young woman, filled with secrets, ...more

"Poetry is the language of the gods. I love poems myself. But poetry is not only in poems; it is diffused everywhere, it is around us. Look at those trees, that sky on all sides there is the breath of beauty, and of life, and where there is life and beauty, there is poetry also."

"Rudin" is the first novel by Ivan Turgenev. Turgenev started to work on it in 1855, and it was first published in the literary magazine "Sovremennik" in 1856. For some reason that I don't know it seems to be the least known of Turgenev's novels. I would think that if you read one or two of his other novels you would want to read the first, but apparently not everyone thinks like I do, which is an incredibly lucky thing come to think of it. Also, I am sure I have never seen any of Turgenev's nov ...more

Turgenev has a way with words so whatever the work may be, it is worth reading. The characters here are beautifully written specially for such a short novel and are truly memorable, specially Rudin but memorable characters are there in his short stories as well. The length of a work doesn't stand in the way of Turgenev in creating his rare, yet very realistic characters.

Turgenev's Rudin is the sort of charismatic man who sets people's hearts on fire but he has a fatal flaw. He is a superfluous

Rudin is the story of Dmitri Nikolaevich Rudin, the titular character, who travels to the Russian countryside to stay with the widowed female landowner Darya Mikhailovna Lasunskaya.

He interacts with her small social circle: her daughter Natalya Aleskeevna Lasunskaya, her secretary Konstantin Diomidych Pandalevskii; and other landowners: the brother and sister Sergei Pavlovich Volyntsev and Aleksandra Pavlovna Lipina, woman hating Afrikan Semenych Pigasov, and social eschewing Mihailo Mihailych

But there was in him such a love of light, sunshine, and living human poetry, such an organic aversion for all that is ugly, or coarse and discordant, that he made himself almost exclusively the poet of the gentler side of human nature.

This is not Turgenev's description of the title character, but is, instead, the description of the author Turgenev as contained in the Introduction to this novel. I haven't seen a better way of saying why I enjoy this author.

That said, Rudin is just not as good as

Turgenev is one of my favorite writers.

I love Rudin, Turgenev’s first nove. I have read it again and again. It is elegant, lyrical, and also disturbing in its revelations about the malleability of human nature. Each character is portrayed as delicately as a figure in a water-color painting, vivified by physical description, humor, and dialogue. Rudin, the intellectual stranger who arrives unexpectedly at the wealthy Darya Mihailovna’s estate, immediately dominates the household and turns relatio

Still cant' figure out if Rudin is good or evil.. Perhaps he got both in him 50/50. One thing unique about these Russian novels is the story might look pretty mainstream, but the characters are not. Its so darn difficult to understand these protagonists !. If you take works like 'Crime and Punishment', 'Oblamov' or 'Resurrection', its the same story. You'll love these characters yet you'll hate them at the same time. 'Rudin' is not as good as 'On the eve', but its a top class psychological novel ...more

I loved this book from the first paragraph. It depicted the drama of smart people, who are full of different ideas but too lazy to turn them into life. Rudin, who is exactly one of those, is still a positive hero, since he was able to prompt another people to not sleep and stuck in their day-to-day life and make them evoked for searching for life's truth. Rudin is also unhappy, as majority of Turgenev's main heroes, because he is to ideal for leaving in such non-ideal world. Perhaps, Turgenev ma ...more

When you think of Russian literature, or even when you think of Turgenev, this isn't the first book to come to mind. However Rudin fills an important role, and chances are, if you've stumbled upon this book, you'll be able to figure it out.

One senses (or at least I did) that Rudin is a stand-in for other Russian intellectuals of his generation (implicitly including the under-appreciated Turgenev himself) - these effete, useless, "superfluous men." Rudin's total failure of action mirrors the fail

Väga hea. Kahju, et nii lühike. Suhtumine peategelasse muutub teose lõpuks järsult.

Alljärgnev pärineb dotsent Lea Pildi loengust.
Algselt kavandas Turgenev jutustust.

My first Turgenev! And also the first time I'm exposed to the "superfluous man" character (atleast knowingly). Rudin, a brilliant man ultimately cannot find any niche in society where he can express himself fully, ends up getting shot in Paris in 1848.
Manuel Gugole

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (Cyrillic: Иван Тургенев) was a novelist, poet and dramatist, and now ranks as one of the towering figures of Russian literature. His major works include the short-story collection A Sportsman’s Sketches (1852) and the novels Rudin (1856), Home of the Gentry (1859), On the Eve (1860), and Fathers and Sons (1862). These works offer realistic, affectionate portrayals of the ...more

“In his funeral oration the spokesman of the most artistic and critical of European nations, Ernest Renan, hailed him as one of the greatest writers of our times: ‘The Master, whose exquisite works have charmed our century, stands more than any other man as the incarnation of a whole race,’ because ‘a whole world lived in him and spoke through his mouth.’ Not the Russian world only, we may add, but the whole Slavonic world, to which it was ‘an honour to have been expressed by so great a Master.” 1 likes
