This book earns 3.8 stars from me. I loved the characters and even in her early years, Wiggs could write.
But the story was too unbelievable for me. I'm not one of those "love at first sight" and "married after a weekend" type of people. While it reads well on the page, it doesn't ring true for real life.
This is a shorter book, a truly quick read. And the amount of character development is incredible. Wiggs knows how to make us care about her characters. While I was intrigued by the idea of the b

Okay, for writing or characterization this story is a complete five star book. The issues I had were with two plot elements and were pretty major. (view spoiler) ...more

This book was number 1 in a series by authors writing for Harlequin (Heart of the West). Apparently there's this ranch for troubled boys and one of the directors has talked some of the graduates into coming back for a bachelor auction fundraiser. So this story is about bachelor number 1 and he's gone to medical school and has become a pathologist. Of course, what's written in the program describing the bachelors is not quite correct but he is a stand up guy still wondering why he let himself be ...more

Story of a single mother who's dreams were crushed by a lousy husband and a dreamer of a father. Her mother is afraid to go out of the house now that her husband is gone. Twyla is a hairdresser in a small town where she lives with her mother and son. A couple of her clients decides she needs a date to her hometown class reunion that she dreads attending. So they 'buy' Dr. Rob Carter at the bachelor auction to benefit the orphanage in the town where Rob grew up to be her pretend fiancé to escort ...more

This is pretty good for a series romance, and it's fun to read the early work ('99) of one of my favorite authors, Susan Wiggs.

Well-meaning busybodies attend a bachelor auction and buy a date/faux fiance for their single-mom hairdresser. The date is a 10-year high school reunion where an ex-husband and judgemental townsfolk lurk. He has issues, she has issues, yet they end up happily ever after in a believable way.

This is going on my keeper shelf with Wiggs later work.

OMG! This book was great. When I really got into the story everything went on hold until I finished. Definitely impressed with this Harlequin's and Susan's offering. Some correction to the blurb though, she is not a widow, she's a divorcee with a jerk of a husband who is very much alive. I'm now adding her to my list of must read authors. Great read.

This was such a sweet book!
Im honestly kinda sad how fast it ended. I wish it were longer but i guess thatd kinda ruin the appeal :/

3.75 "the magic's inside" stars ;)

Fun story. Will definitely look for more by this author.
This doesn't make my squeaky clean romance list, but luckily didn't go in to great detail.
