Mount Everest is a cold and inhospitable place. After what happened on the mountain in 2006, a lot of people were saying the same thing about the hearts of many of those who climb Mount Everest. Ten people died on Mount Everest that year, but no death provoked more controversy and outrage than that of David Sharp. Sharp is remembered in the public consciousness as the young British climber who "lay dying near the top of Mount Everest while forty other climbers walked past him on their way t...more

Climbing to the summit of Mount Everest has been one of the ultimate climbing feats since first done by Sir Hilary in 1953. But its history, both past and current, is a combination of courage, cowards and chaos. Death is not an atypical result of the climb. Nick Weil has written an in depth account of the 2006 season, the deadliest year since the notorious 1996.

The Mountain is the focus of many dreams and desires. Everest is not for the faint hearted, not for anyone who doubts his own abilit...more

Although Dark Summit sells itself as "the true story of Everest's most controversial season" it also tries to a be a more general history of climbing on Everest. While the details of the mountain's history are interesting and perhaps necessary to help readers put the 2006 season into perspective, the presentation of these facts interrupts the core story.

Nick Heil recreates the 2006 season on Mt Everest and focuses mostly on the climb lead by Russell Brice's Himex team. He breaks th...more

Read this immediately after finishing Michael Kodas' High Crimes, and I felt this was a better book. Heil presents thorough, engrossing research on the 2006 Everest climbing season and portraits of the climbers. He avoids finger-pointing ala Krakauer or grievance-airing ala Kodas, allowing the reader to draw her own conclusions from his clear-eyed writing.

I enjoyed the history he provides of mountaineering in general and Everest summit attempts in particular. However, the history portio...more

Facinating. I have never read about expeditions to Everest before I was enthralled. I took this book from my Dad, thanks! Otherwise I might not have given it a chance. This book demonstrated to me the real ability books have to take you places you'll never go. I loved it!

It was full of stories about climbers in 2006. They weren't all happy stories though. I have to admit it was hard to follow sometimes, to keep the stories straight, and because I didn't know a lot of the technical terms whe...more

Reading this book is certainly an eye opener. The book details the 2006 climbing summer of Mt. Everest and the disasterous events. Reading this you wonder why anyone would want to do it (besides "it is there"). More amazing is that Discovery Channel was filming at the same time and you can get the DVD's of the 6-part show and see what you have just read.

recommended to Jim by: book review
recommends it for: people thinking about climbing Everest
a lot about Mount Everest and commercial guides to take you up the mountain - $40,000 and up with some cheaper guides

tells how severe conditions are and what happens to climbers but doesn't really tell you much more even though it tries to explain the mountain creeds of helping/not helping each other

Heil looks follows the 2006 Mt. Everest climbing season, concentrating on 3 men and their tragic attempts on the mountain, 2 of which had absolutely no business on the mountain.
