This is a witty parody of the War of Spanish Succession where armed conflict is described allegorically as a protracted lawsuit where battles won are successful victories, and the various countries involved are personified. Arbuthnot creates the original John Bull whose principal ally and liability is Nic Frog who represents the Dutch; Lewis Baboon is a parody of Louis XIV of France; Esquire South is Austria; and Lord Strut is the Bourbon king on the Spanish throne.
