Jadi kuganjar bintang 3.5.
Walaupun tergolong tebal, The Novice tidak membosankan.
Tidak menjijikkan malah g dukung aja, tapinya sempet membuat g berfikir kalau nanti...more
Mature plot, snappy writing, interesting characters. What more could one ask for?
Again, the author drags part of the story, aka where Sonea gets bullied by some of the rich, spoilt novices, out for pretty much 2/3 of the book, needlessly I may add.
I only gave this two stars because throughout the whole book, whilst the style of writing is still appreciable, I found myself completely aghast at the pathetic, lacking in backbone and self-doubting creature that she turned Sonea into!
We are talking about a young, determined indiv...more
I love the characters, especially the main one, but it really bothers me how focused the author is of the different "races". Each character is described primarily with ethnicity and usually follow a given pattern of behaviour. I would accept it if they were different species, like dwarves, humans and elves, but I don't buy it that people just over the mountain are so vastly different in skin color or mentality. And that they haven't mixed more.
I hope this will have some kind of sign...more
While Canavan’s writing style is still not the best, this time around the characters seems a lot more inspiring and the overall themes are darker and more serious. We have some pretty disturbing portraits of school bullying, teacher negligence, classism, homophobia and general bigotry. And there’s this beautiful theme of self-acceptance in a world of hatred. Despite the darker tone the book never stops being… en...more
- I enjoyed the series, but I'm putting it firmly in the "good not great" category (hence the 3 star rating). As so often happens with YA fiction, it just doesn't have the full depth or the originality that would move it up a notch or two, which is unfortunate since there are definitely books out there which prove YA fiction need not be shallow or...more
Watching Sonea deal with the discrimination from the students and teachers at the guild was heart-wrenching. And Regin REALLY got under my skin (man, I wanted him in the teeth!), which made me respect Sonea's character a lot more because I would have retaliated the moment he made that snide comment about her m...more
However, there were some very strong, well done, if often predictable points. I think what bothers me about the plot is less the simplicity than the unevenness. Sometimes the plot drags for chapters with no advance and sometimes climaxes are skipped.
For example, after building up the importance...more
Die Reise von Dannyl i...more

This book also deals with some fairly controversial issues. Bullying, for one. There were many times that I cringed and fumed at how much bullying went on. And as frustrating as it was to read, especially whe...more
"Even if a magician's powers surface of their own accord, he will soon be dead if he does not gain the knowledge of how to control them." Alone among all the novices in the Magicians' Guild, only Sonea comes from lowly beginnings. Yet she has won powerful allies—including Lord Dannyl, newly promoted to Guild Ambassador. But Dannyl must now depart for the Elyne court, leaving Sonea at the mercy of the lies and malicious rumors her enemies are busy spreading . . . until the High Lord Akkar
