How long will you stay in the game? The last thing Kei and Masaru remember was being struck dead by a subway train while saving the life of a drunken bum. What a waste And yet somehow they're still...alive? Or semi-alive? Maybe it's reanimated... by some kind of alien orb with a nasty message... "Your lives are over. What you do with your new lives is up to me "...more

This is the strangest series. I started reading it, and I can't put it down! manga doesn't usually catch me that way, especially when there's a lot of action involved.

But Gantz is so strange. The best I can figure this is what's caught me:

1. Great action scenes. Yes, they're bloody, but they're always clear. No exposition is ever needed.

2. An interesting mystery. What the hell is going on here? The main character learns a lot along the way, but it's never THE ...more

First of all, let me just say...HUGE Gantz fan. I loved the anime...I thought it was amazing...and then when I heard from tons of people that the manga was even more amazing I had to check it out. At the time there was no retail copies in the store. So I read through some chapters online. Of course not all of the translators online are going to be professional. I was a little turned off by this retail copies translations. It seems to be too exact I guess or something...and it kind of seems like ...more

An interesting beginning to this series, and since it leaves in a cliffhanger, I may well have to hunt for the next series. A group of individuals are brought together, seemingly at random, by a mysterious orb. They are kidnapped just as they are about to die. Fans of things like Battle Royale and similar game/hunting dystopias, maybe even things like The Hunger Games or "The Running Man," or maybe even better "The Long Walk," will probably like this given the story is one wh...more

¿Morir o no? Esa es la pregunta que te harías si fueras tele-transportado a una habitación con 8 desconocidos, tu amigo de la infancia y una extraña bola ne...more

Violent and graphic, but very well done. Unfortunately, this is only the first volume and it is the very beginning of the story whereas in Japan, where the series is ongoing, the story is quite far along. Note to those who watched the anime based on this: Some of the content in the first volume is different than the television show.

The French may have said “Make love, not war” but then Gantz appeared and said “Why not do both”…

Gantz is one of my favorite dark sci-fis and I gladly suggest it to everyone who likes this sort of themes. The characters are all unmoral and carnal, violent and devoid of sympathy, a bunch of miserable cowards and horny creeps instead of idealistic super-powered kids. It is both a plus and a minus, depending on what types of people you want as a main cast. I personally have g...more

This review constitutes for the entire series - or what I read of it.

The concept of GANTZ was really fascinating to me: a young boy dies and finds himself surrounded in a room, awaiting purgatory. He has to complete a certain quest in order to be free from death's grasp - kill x amount of aliens. If he dies during these raids, then he dies for good.

Super sci-fi and fun. I was in.

Yes, it is disgustingly gory. Yes, you will feel ill. But that made it so much more...more

I picked this up on a whim at the Borders near me (going out of business sale), and I'll definitely grab more volumes. I must have a thing for sci-fi manga recently. This story begins at a subway station, where we meet two high school boys - Kei and Masaru. When a homeless man falls onto the tracks, only Kei leaps onto the tracks to try and save him...and calls to Masaru (an estranged, former childhood friend) to help. Masaru feels pressured to put up a good front and leaps down to help. Sadly, ...more

My guilty pleasure. The lure of it is just so great that I was able to start from Chapter 1 and in less than a month catch up with the latest chapter (around 210 at that time). Yes, it's not that text heavy but it's still no light feat as I have other things to do (play video games, work, play video games :p). Oku is just so brave exploring a lot of concepts and he doesn't hold back on scenarios a typical author would try to keep away from (that may complicate the story too much).

Meh. Will definitely appeal to fans of violence, gore, action and tons of FANSERVICE. The main character is basically a sexist jerk and looks down on the "idiot" that tried to save a girl from raped. It is marked "For Mature Readers" on the back cover and some copies have stickers that say "Parental Advisory" on the front.

Personally, that's not my cup of tea, but I'm sure it will circulate like crazy if you add it to your collection.

A epic Masterpiece, huge and thrilling story that will keep you reading until the very end (the manga is not finished yet ;D!!!).

Dont get cheated by the first or second volume, just keep reading and you will find something astounding and not so often seen before.

-Awesome Work.
Recomendable for those who likes Sci-fi/action/thrilling stories.

The cover (back and front) says it all. Guns, gore, and a girl in a hyperstylized story of a mysterious survival show. Though at first glance it all might seem either just crass fanservice (which it has) and/or brutal violence (ditto), but somehow it all fits together that effectively balances both action and service, with the story in a mind-blowing package that leaves you wanting to know more.

Art's great and stories interesting. Atmosphere and possibilities are wonderful. Reading this today made me think the only reason I enjoyed PSYREN is because I'd already tasted the atmosphere from this much superior work.

Ongoing read volumes 1-21

Currently my biggest guilty pleasure manga. The first few volumes that set the stage are great: after the characters die, there is a game that can give them a chance to get their lives back.

This is classic japanese bizarre, but is also top of the line scifi. Ive read most of these when i was young but im going through them again. The art is for the mot part meh, but the drawings of the onion alien(s) were rad. There is also gratuitous violence and (japanese) sexuality.

The content of the books itself disturbed me and I found the main character to be a total obnoxious jerk, but I heard it gets better so I might just continue with it. The plot itself is interesting, but so far it hasn't been appeal to me to my personal tastes. :/

Kei Kurono has just died by a train accident. However, the next thing he sees is not heaven, but a room with a mysterious black ball and other individuals who are supposedly dead. Kei learns that he must defeat "aliens" in order to survive...

Read chapters 1-51 not sure how that translates into volumes since I read this from an Ipod app. Weird concept, not sure if I will be continuing this series. Not too into the sci-fi aspect of it. This story line may also get too repetitive.
Damon
Damon rated it 2 of 5 stars
This was violent, but not in a way that seemed like much fun, and the events of the plot were shrouded in mystery which I have no interest in seeing made any clearer. The art was also pretty lifeless, which seems to be a direct result of the elaborate (and seemingly unnecessary) process used in it's creation, as described at the end of the book.

It was a very interesting beginning, i did not see any of that coming, but it made me sad inside that the kid died, even though he wasn't human.

I would really recommend this anime to those who love sci-fi, it is very abnormal.

Loved the sliced body panels as the characters "tele-port" from place to place. Of coarse some cultural references are lost in translation. Intriguing enough to pick up Volume 2.

I originally gave this book 2 stars, but, after thinking about it. I give it one. The "fan service" is an immediate turn-off for me. And I'm assuming the "fans" are thirteen year old boys considering what happens to that poor girl in the beginning. The thoughts that are in most of the males' heads during most of the book... not to mention the dog. Crass is an understatement. I don't know if I should donate this book or throw it in the garbage. Maybe recycle it with the news...more

While this was good enough to make me want to read volume 2, I found it to be too aloof to fully enjoy. If there is no more exposition in the second volume I will probably be done.

An ongoing Japanese comic book series written and drawn by respected creator Hiroya Oka. Very sci-fi heavy with occasional gratuitous cheesecake, but an entertaining read nonetheless.
