So. Shouju.

Well, don't judge a book by it's cover, eh?

Oh gosh, I don't think I'm going to actually finish this. It's not that it's boring, it's just not really interesting either.

I have a proper review somewhere. I absolutely love this series. One of my favourite shoujo mangas ever! Kyoko is awesome in her wacky intense yet likable way. Ren is curiously interesting and dedicated to his work. And Sho, he is the villain who very villain -like, but yet, as the series goes on, proves that he is capable of feeling human. Actually I find his character intensely interesting just like Kyoko's and Ren's. I guess they are just one of the reasons why I'm so drawn into this series....more

Manga is something that I like reading again and again; Skip Beat! is my favorite series in the world. Why, might you ask? I would be glad to explain it. The story is great, the artwork is great, it's never a chore to push through chapters; the story is slow, as is the romance, and the two main characters love each other because they love each other, not because they're randomly attracted to one another. If you read manga a lot, you know what I'm talking about. It happens in literature, too, but...more

This story follows a girl named Kyoko Mogami, who works her butt off for her childhood friend, and famous superstar, Shotaro, so he can live the life of a rockstar. She finds out that he's just using her, and she swears that she'll have revenge on him one day; and that she'll crush his hopes and dreams like he did to her.

Kyoko Mogami is a strong country girl trying to make her way in the big city- while holding up a superstar- her childhood friend. I love how instead of crying and being weak, s...more

Ok, about Skip Beat. I must say that I truly enjoy this particular manga. The heroin, at the beginning, is every run of the mill shojo character. However, after she realizes that the one she loves does not love her, and in fact has been purposely using her for his own gain, she shows her darker side that is both scary and comedic. She vows her revenge on him in the only way that she can hurt him, to be a bigger star in show biz. Through out her trails she shows unbelievable feats of physical str...more

What is the best way of saying this? I was wary of reading Skip beat. The cover looked weird and I can't read manga if I don't like the art, because let's face it, the art makes up about 70% of it (reading untranslated manga is actually pretty interesting). I decided to read it anyway. Boredom is an excellent motivator. So I read the first volume and I suppose I should talk about the good things first, except I couldn't really find much good in the beginning. Let me write down the first thought...more

The story is kind of lame. Kyoko is a girl who is too silly for my taste. She fell in love with her childhood friend Shotaro, and moved out with him to the big city. He became a super star while she remained working as a maid. First sign that the guy is a jerk. He barely visits her, but she is happy just seeing him for a few moment. That is, until she hears that he was using her to do all his chores. What an a**hole! So of course she seeks for revenge, in doing a complete make-over. Just wrong....more

I picked up Skip Beat, because it is a massively popular series. The first volume was interesting, but didn't establish itself in my mind as anything spectacular. However, it has piqued my interest enough that I want to continue with the series. I assume it becomes more interesting.

Kyoko starts out as your stereotypical shoujo manga girl. Quiet, kind, sacrificing. She dropped everything - including school - to run off to Tokyo with childhood friend Sho to help him on his path to stardom. Once Sh...more

I've been toying with the idea of reading this series for a while, and seeing it recently appear in the Top 5 of a reader's poll recently, I finally took the plunge. A good, classic shojo story...with some spunk. Kyoko Mogami drops out of high school to follow her childhood friend (and the object of her crush), Sho, to Tokyo so that he can pursue his dream of becoming a famous celebrity/musician. Of course, readers (and Kyoko) learn very early in volume one that Sho has been taking advantage of...more

Shou is a famous idol. Kyoko is his childhood friend. They live together in his giant mansion. Kyoko works in a restaurant and does all of Shou's cooking and cleaning because she is (not so) secretly in love with him and worships the ground he walks on. Until the day that she overhears him telling his girlfriend how much he hates her, and that he only invited her to Tokyo because (surprise) she was a such a willing slave.

Then she vows to become an idol, too, so she can get revenge. The whole thi...more

Kyoko followed her true love, the up and coming musical artist Sho to Tokyo to support him while he works his way to becoming an idol. Unfortunately for Kyoko, Sho is a complete (view spoiler)[asshole (hide spoiler)] who only sees her as little more than hired help (who he doesn't even pay!). Kicked to the curb and completely destroyed by her misguided love, Kyoko decides she's going to become an even bigger celebrity than Sho. The only problem is that she has no artistic talent...more

This series blew me away! I couldn't stop reading once I got started. I watched the anime so many times, and afterwards I read the series. I then watched the drama twice. This series never gets old and despite the light and frivolous appearance, it was deep and showed the true nature of love. It was very unique as it centered around show biz. It inspired me to act in my school play!
The author did an excellent job. Every character had powerful emotions, and they looked gorgeous or handsome or...more

This book is probably often dismissed as a "girls book", but you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, are you? Turns out that the main girly part is the cover.

I remember that this was my first right to left book, and it wasnt that hard, personally. It also has a guide in the back to teach you how.

This is mainly a summary, without the end part ---->(view spoiler)[so basically, this girl follows her love life to Tokyo, where he is famous, but it turns out he thinks of her as a slave,

Sacrificed your life to support your so-called boyfriend, but it turned out that he wasn’t your prince charming after all. Who doesn't love a little sweet revenge for that?

Cover:
Not really fan of the cover. Hope they make it more eye catching.

Plot:
The major part of the story is Kyoko's efforts to become a big star in order to beat Sho. Strange and funny way of revenge as it is but still, it caught my attention.

Characters:
Undecided . . .

Artwork:
Average and neat but overcrowded per page.

This is just the start to an awesome series. Even if you find the first volume a bit boring, once you get to the part where they are on-location for a Dark Moon shooting, you will definitely find it really interesting and want to read more. The characters' relationships with each other can be very complicated because some of the characters love each other, but they can't love one another. But it isn't in the Romeo and Juliet sense. This is a story about a girl who is betrayed...more

I loved Skip Beat! I loved the characters. I loved to hate Shotaro, I loved the creepy little girl whose name escapes me currently, and I loved watching goody-goody Kyoko (who at first reminded me of Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, gag gag gag) turn into a jaded, snarky eye-clawing wannabe pop star. I sometimes disagreed with her actions, but I loved the budding romance between her and Ren, I loved her audition, and I loved her growing friendship with, ah, whatsername. I also liked the more real...more

It's been a long time since I was quite this wow'd by a first volume. It urges me to just go buy all the rest of the series and finish them ASAP, though that that may end up jinxing the magic..

Basically it is perfect so far. The comedy had me laughing out loud ala the drama Gokusen (or maybe My Boss My Hero), the mood goes deeper than many other shoujo series. While it is very funny, charming, and whimsical- there is a grit and sourness to it that is very intriguing. I have so many questions abo...more

Reading this as something of a challenge. My first attempt at reading a Manga (which I received as a RABCK) was a fiasco - I could not get used to reading in the right (wrong) order and found it unspeakably irritating. One of my students is a wild Manga fan and did a presentation on the genre for the class - and lent me this one to try again. It's certainly more promising than the other one, although I do have a hard time getting it straight. The script is also sometimes so small I have a very h...more

Characters:
>I think I like the girl heroine a lot and I think I'm Team Ren atm

Translation

Ehh... Just not my cup of tea.

Concept: main girl--Kyoko--gets mad at the guy she loves--Sho--because he's all famous now and doesn't want to be around her. So...she decides she's going to go off and beat him in show biz! Seriously? This is not what I call a story. Kyoko has no admirable qualities in her, unless we're considering her persistence as one, though she uses it for quite the odd reason. Here we have another book with a girl so obsessed with her guy that it seems unhealthy, though her...more
