Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev is a master of the short story and novella. There is no other Russian writer that I know of who has such a flair for creating and describing landscapes. One could argue that Lermontov is a rival, but unfortunately, his body of work is quite small.

This short summary only refers to King Lear of the Steppes. But, Rudin is excellent as well.

Read King Lear of the steppes in a couple of hours, been trying to get this one for a while. Love the classic russians and Turgenev writes beautifully.
A group of diners have a discussion about the characters in Shakespeare plays and people that remind them of these people, Hamlet, Othello and MacBeth. One old man goes on to tell the story of a man who was like King Lear, a short story which seems to flow effortlessly.
