This book did an excellent job in teaching young children about what goes on under the ground. Since no one can see what goes on, children often question about it. Its amazing what all goes on, and by the colorful detailed pictures this book does a good job showing it. I recommend this book to all young children, for a fun learning experience.
Actually, this is fiction, but I would use it with the kids as a discussion opportunity that would focus on the science. One easily corrected problem would have been the "hungry creepy-crawlies munching through [plant roots]." Fortunately, most 'creepy-crawlies' do not munch on roots; otherwise, plants would be in major trouble.
this was read at library to special needs class. It is a bit hard to relate to australia, in that there were moles in there. Also, the kids were not convinced with the picture of the children coming out on the other side of the world ... trying to work out where?
