The further I get into this series, the more I like it. These are great books, wonderfully written and illustrated. Black and DiTerlizzi have done an amazing job. These books in some ways are like C.S. Lewis's Narnia books, and in other ways like J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but they are not overtly religious the way Lewis's are and they are not as dark as Tolkien's. They will introduce children to the concept of wonder, and believing in things unseen, or at least unseen by most. As the s ...more

Jared and Simon are used to having someone around who looks just like them. They're identical twins, after all. But they're not triplets, and there appear to be three of them now, so clearly faerie involvement is to blame. As they're puzzling that out, their sister Mallory disappears from her fencing match and they must figure out what snuck in and took her--and how to get her back again. What do these dwarves want? And what's their sister got to do with it? This Field Guide thing may be good fo ...more

My thought
The story
It's been two weeks since anything weird has happened to the Grace family. But all that changes on the day of the Mallory's fencing tournament. While watching from the bleachers, Jared spies someone going through Mallory's bag. Then Mallory disappears. Can Jared and Simon find her?

The danger never seemed too real in the series until Mulgarath was introduced; he is a character with no remorse, and the illustrations of him are frightening

"The Ironwood Tree" contains some of the

1. I don't know how everything is going to get wrapped up in just one more book.
2. They have to find Arthur still.
3. And beat Mulgrath.
4. And deal with their dad's departure.
5. And maybe save Aunt Lucy from the nuthouse.
6. And save all mankind.
7. The dwarf cave, although the kids were there under bad situations, seemed like a really cool place.
8. The dwarf deaths almost made me cry.
9. We didn't hear about the griffin much in this book, so maybe he'll be in the next.
10. And we haven't dealt w

I can honestly say that this series is one that was really let down by the film adaptation. Back when the film was released I found myself excited for what was to come, only to be extremely disappointed with what we were given. If you’re someone who enjoyed the film then I really do suggest that you read the books to find out just how great they actually are rather than taking the film standpoint on it.

The fourth instalment of the series follows in the footsteps of the three previous books as it

I loved these books.

This was another series I picked up because of the film and I wasn't let down. Holly Black never disappoints, as her writing is flawless.

My younger self would have given this an instant 5/5; however, being of an older audience, I had to go with a 4. It's a lovely series and I adored them, but this is written for a younger reader.

This is also a series you HAVE to complete because the individual books don't really have conclusions. They all tie in to complete the one storyli

I don't love or hate this series. It's a series I started, they're very quick reads, and I'm going to see it through to the end. If you read younger stories, I recommend this series and if you're not into those kind of stories, then maybe you should try this out anyway. It's not horrible. I won't lie though, it's not great either. Sometimes I find myself wondering how someone I love so much (Holly Black) has this series that I don't love like her other books I've read. Then I remind myself that ...more

This is where the kids' story starts to become SCARY and life-threatening. Being a kid and finding a book about fairies sounds like awesome magical fun, but obviously it isn't, since here they are dangerous, demanding creatures with no regard for humans.

Also, something I hadn't fully realized before is how this series wastes no time with introductions and recaps, they just spring you right into the action, which for me is a very pleasant storytelling technique since the books are already short

This book was very descriptive! The faeries were trying to trick Jared to get the field guide book. Jared finds himself in a heap of trouble. He over hears his mom talking to his Dad about his behavior. He feels sicken because he knows that she won't believe him. Trouble goes down hill after what happenef in the school.
The children find themselves battling for their freedom from the dwarves. When they find their freedom, they aren't expecting what they see. They know that they got to tell their

It is surprising how different this book series is from the movie. Usually movies follow close to what the books are, however in this series if they'd changed the names of the characters in the movie you wouldn't even know it was the same story. This book had no part in the movie which in ways was to bad the dwarfs were cool. My kids are still in the story and want to start the next one right away.

Violence- Fighting and annihilation of a large group. Not graphic.

I read this book with my son as part of his summer reading, and I asked him to describe the book for my review. He responded that this is a book that is difficult to describe. He liked the mystery, and really enjoyed how the whimsical illustrations supported elements of the narrative. He found this book (number 4 of 5) to be interesting because of the mysteries that are introduced: There is a character who takes on Jared Grace's appearance and form; the field guide goes missing, and there is a m ...more

This story is about Mallory and her twin little brothers Jared and Simon who move to their aunt's country estate with their mother when their parents divorce. They discover a field guide in the house which unlocks a magical world around them and send them through a series of enchanted events.

I think out of the books I've read so far from this series, this one was my least favorite. It was still good, but I found to be just a little boring. It took me a little longer to read than the others because it just wasn't holding my interest as well. I hope that is not a hint at what the rest of the books will be like because I have been enjoying these books.

It wasn't bad though! The war for possession of the guide wages on. In this book, it's whereabouts are still mostly unknown. It's hinted

The twists, the turns, it's all getting exciting over here! This is number four in the chronicles and the end is coming and the adventure is growing. Poor Jared has been victimised through the whole series and it is not about the be easier for him. As the faery world and the real world collide again, the greater personal consequences for Jared start to become apparent.

When the children try to have a normal family day to support their sister, things get interrupted and havoc is wreaked as the fae

Book four in The Spiderwick Chronicles doesn't disappoint. In fact, it ramps up the action, the suspense, and the anxiety. Jared (the family's troublemaker) is easily blamed for the mischief caused by the Faerie folk, but in this segment of the story, Jared realizes just how tricky and how evil the Faerie can be. Some of the Faerie folk can shapeshift! Yikes!

Jared is blamed for violent behavior during a sporting event, and during the commotion and the punishment, Mallory is kidnapped by the dwar

3.5 stars. Defiantly the best of the series so far.

Notes/Mini-Review:

- I really like Mallory and Simon.

In this book, Mallory is very nervous about a fencing match, where she will dual with Chris-the-Captain, a boy she likes. Mrs. Grace, Simon, and Jared go along to watch their sister at the fencing match. While there, Jared notices someone who looks an awful lot like Simon going through his sister's belongings. When Jared tries to go after the Simon look alike, a Jared look alike, Not-Jared, is "caught" with a weapon and the real Jared gets in trouble. Meanwhile, Mallory goes missing. Jared and S ...more

Let me make one thing clear before starting off: I'm giving this book a 4.5 and not a 4(I do consider this book better than book 2). However, since Good Reads doesn't allow half-points I must make due. Yes, I know in math you round to the nearest unit, but I think putting it at a 5 would've been even MORE deceiving.

Unlike the previous 3 books this one seems to be a bit more abrupt in its beginning and not so much of a feeling of on-the-heels of each other as the previous 3 books. I haven't read
