In yet antoher Spiderwick Chronicel, the kids go visit their Anut Lucinda to ask if she, too, knew about the fairies, and how she can help them get rid of all the trouble they've been getting into. In the proscess, Simon almost ruins his future by eating magical fruit, and Jared and Mallory get into a fight.
Back home, even MORE danger comes their way....

After having read many other reviews on this series, I have to first say this book states on the back to it that it's written for 6-10 year olds. A lot of the reviews I've seen state that the story is too dumbed down, but when you look at the stories and level readers other kids are reading at this age, it's about on par. This isn't meant to be written for adults. It's meant to be read by kids that are still pretty young readers. It doesn't have the memorable characters like Harry Potter because...more

I must admit I am addicted to these books, read three of them in 2 days and will more than likely reread the whole series again and again. Some books are like a bottle of Gatorade that you just chug back, some like a nice cup of tea that you sip, and some like a fine wine that you savour slowly. Right now I am drinking these books back because I need to know what happens next. But I know I will go back and drink them in slowly like a big mug of Irish Breakfast tea on my second reading. Black and...more

Lucinda's Secret is the third book in the Spiderwick series. Unfortunately, it's not quite stand-alone, and in order to fully understand everything here - you really must read the first and second books. Additionally, the Spiderwick books are not for those that are not seriously interested in all things fairy - as there are many unexplained mentions of things like 'brownies' (not the food). It took me several mentions of the word 'brownie' to discover that they were not referencing chocolate tre...more

There's been nothing but trouble for the Grace children (Jared, Simon, and Mallory) since they found the book "Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You". More than one monster wants the Guide and Simon and Mallory are eager to destroy it, but Jared isn't so sure that's a good idea, so they go to their Great Aunt Lucinda to see what she can tell them about the Guide. Lucinda will tell them some of her secrets and they will discover even more as they try to solve the mys...more

I still don't understand why they didn't combine all five books into one. For the sake of beginner readers? Well, it would be so much more convenient as a single novel. There was such a long interval between the time when I finished the second book of this series to when my cousins finally got the third, so that I've half forgotten what previously happened. For instance, I didn't understand why Thimbletack was angry at Jared. And the Phooka, frankly, made no sense to me [although this of course...more

I just finished reading the book Lucinda's Secret by: Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. The third book of the Spiderwick Chronicles. Even though I am only on page 88 of Lucinda's Secret I am more than half way through the book I can say that this book has lots of adventure and very odd creatures - and a very weird book. In the middle of the book Jared loses a book called The Field Guide. A man the size of a pencil named Thimbletack took it and now Jared, Mallory, and Simon are on a mission to get...more

This story is about Mallory and her twin little brothers Jared and Simon who move to their aunt's country estate with their mother when their parents divorce. They discover a field guide in the house which unlocks a magical world around them and send them through a series of enchanted events.

I loved this series! The pace was perfect, the tone appropriate, the characters absolutely believable and realistic (a trait which I feel is critical in enabling a younger reader to relate to the story), and...more

Book three! So by now it's only been an hour and a half since I started reading this series, half hour books just fly by.

In this book Jared, Simon and Mallory learn more about their great Aunt Lucinda whose house it is they are living, and who is the daughter of the man who made the guide.

This book explores a few more laws and aspects of the faery world, such as eating faery fruit and the introduction to even more mythical creatures. What these books do is show that children can be clever, cunn...more

The spectacular adventures continue in book #3. The brownie who lived in their house is pretty peeved about the method of which the obtained the seeing stone in the previous book. So he's back to playing dirty little tricks again! The disappearance of the guide is discovered when they go to visit their Aunt Lucinda in the Asylum. They wanted to advice on dealing with the angry faeries. When they mention the guide, Lucinda says that her dad took it with him when he left. The kids protest the fac...more

The Spiderwick Chronicles are fun, quick reads, which I buy for my classroom library. The students love them because they are interesting, paranormal reads in a much shorter version and format than most middle grade fantasy books they encounter. While I do appreciate the fact that my students aren't intimidated by a large, thick book, as an adult and quick reader, I find myself focusing more on my annoyance with the fact that I paid $6 a piece (at a book resale shop, 1/2 of full price) for these...more

Lucinda's Secret(Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 3) by Holly Black. Is about 3 kids 13 year old Malorie Grace and 9 year old twins Jared and Simon, are caught up in a world of Faerie's, Goblins, and Banshee. After Ms. Grace moves her kids to the spiderwick Estate Jared finds a mysterious book that says DO NOT OPEN witch he off course does.In the third book they catch their breath while visiting their "crazy" aunt Lucinda. I would recommend this book to readers who like fantasy and faerie tails.

The books are getting better and better! In this book they get to meet the owner of the house they're staying in; Aunt Lucinda! Before I knew it I had read through the first 3 chapters in the blink of an eye. The rest soon followed. It was more compelling of a read than the last two books(not saying they were bad mind you). The boggart is still mad from the last book and this ultimately results in the Field Guide being stolen(Ok, I ASSUME it's him. We haven't SEEN him in this book, just his misc...more

So they travel from their forest-protected house, to the busy city, to get to their aunt's asylum. Jared's main external conflict is what Aunt Lucinda is going to tell Jared, Simon, Mallory. I think this book suffered a bit from "middle installment syndrome". The fast-paced exposition and action in the first two books is over with, and the third book is there for a breather, and to set up the action for the final two books. In this book, the three Grace siblings decide to get to the bottom of the origin of the mysterious book and the strange goings-on, so they go to visit their great-aunt Lucinda, who is, unfortunately, in an asylum. As a result, this is a very talky book and light...more

Like The Seeing Stone , I wasn't as charmed this go around as I was with the original, The Field Guide . Book Three does, however, have the added bonus of offering new details (like some of the Spiderwicks' personal history and involvement with the faerie) and the obvious setup of the kids deciding they're actively going to take a stand against these creatures that keep attacking them. I can't wait to see this play out, yet I'm mostly looking forward to seeing Jared realize his own potential and...more

For my third book I read The Spidrwick Chronicles by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black, which is a fantasy book because there are a few strange creatures living in the house. The book is about a strange book that the family found in a secret passage way in their house. Lucinda's secret was that creatures were coming and Lucinda didn't tell her brothers and the brothers found the secret because they saw strange creatures in the house. The protagonists are Lucinda, Mallory and Jared. My favorite part...more

Another perfectly acceptable entry in the series. The Grace children learn that they have an actual "big bad" enemy (as opposed to the previous scattershot danger), there is much discussion about the fate of the "Field Guide," and Jared struggles with his temper and uses his wits to save his siblings and himself. Also, we meet crazy Aunt Lucinda, who is awesome. Also, having a twin can be convenient. Also, the "Field Guide" goes missing. Also, Mark Hamill is a pretty darn capable narrator. It's...more

It's off to visit "crazy" old Aunt Lucinda in this third installment of the Spiderwick Chronicles. After their adventures with goblins and trolls, the Grace children can't decide if they should keep the Field Guide or surrender it to the faeries (why would the faeries even want it, they know everything about themselves???). At the asylum, they discover that maybe their crazy, old aunt, really isn't so crazy after all and that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to hang on to the book, after all, sh...more

Lucinda's Secret is the third book in the Spiderwick Chronicles series. In this book,13 year old Mallory and 9 year old twins Jared and Simon are arguing over wether or not to keep Arthur's feild guide. They decide to visit their great aunt Lucinda to see how she feels about the matter, and there they learn they might be in a lot more trouble than they thought.

I didn't like Lucinda's secret as much as the other Spiderwick Chronicle books because it wasn't really action-packed or mysterious at all...more

More tricks from Thimbletack (the house brownie), a map discovered, encounters with a phooka, a unicorn, and the elves as our heroes continue on their quest.

Good. Probably not as good as the first 2. But you can see that it is leading up to bigger and better things in 4 and 5. Kind of curious to see how it ends.

My April book is Lucinda's Secret by Holly Black. It is a sequel to the other Spiderwick Chronicles books and it's where they find out that they're aunt Lucinda knows about all of the magical creatures they know about.

The best thing about this book is seeing the flashbacks in your mind of how when she was telling stories about her childhood. I liked how she described some creatures that she saw and knew.

The setting is at an estate in the outskirts of the city. The characters inherited it from th...more

These three are short, but they were so woven to be one story, that I'm giving them only one review. They are beyond adorable. I adore them and I want to have them for my kids.

And I love how all the races are done, the words in each of them, and how they connect. And the art! How can I not tell you about the art! Half of the fun of moving on through any of the stories is the art that's everywhere, brightening everything.

I love Mallory, Jared and Simon in their own ways, and I love how complete...more

A three-star rating isn't really indicative of how good these books were - I really liked them. I think they probably deserve five stars for a young audience. They are listed as juvenile fiction (which I think the library categorizes as up through fourth grade but I am not sure). As an adult, I really enjoyed reading them- I just could help feeling that they fell far short of the potential of the story. As an adult reader, it was like reading an abridged version of an amazingly wonderful story....more

My 7 yr old daughter and I are currently reading this series, which i find is excellent bonding time for the two of us. They're advanced for her reading level but not so far advanced as to be daunting for her. So far a good read and somewhat age appropriate for a 7 yr old. It also helps that I alter my voice for each individual character which seems to hold her attention and amuse her. She has become so enthusiastic about us reading together that she tells me she is going to read a few pages to...more
