A much-needed addition to the contemporary parenting book selection, The Transgender Child is a comprehensive, informative resource. By combining research and personal stories, the authors present a text that will prove itself indispensable not only for parents and families of transgender children, but also for anyone who works with young people.

Raider and I found this book a little basic--but gender transitions is nothing new for us. It has a strong message of acceptance, which of course I support, but I wondered if it would be hard for parents who are really struggling with a child's gender expression to hear. Some of my favorite parts were the stories by families; I think I'm hungry to hear about other people's experience. A good resource for families new to the issue, I think, or for friends and loved ones who don't know much about...more

Recommends it for:
families of trans or gender-questioning children
well, this book meets a need. the target audience is well-intentioned, kinda vaguely feminist & vaguely familiar with the concept of transgender families with kids under 18 who are trans or gender questioning. as you get further from this experience, the book becomes less helpful.
some things about it i really enjoyed. the stories from different families about their experiences with having a trans kid. the overwhelming number of positive stories where families are really trying to hard to re...more

2nd good book I read on trans... This is from a different perspective than the 1st I read. The focus on trans children is especially important to me, as that is the original purpose of my reading into this subject. However, the added information about steps in the development of a trans person was helpful. It is filled with hope for the future, of further understanding and compassion from the American culture towards trans people... I recommend this book to everyone, as it will help you become m...more
The Transgender Child is, to me, the #1 book for any person (mainly parents) who know a gender non-conforming person. I consider it a great medical or psychological journal in layman's terms.
If you or someone you know has a gender variant or transgender child, go pick up this book.
Also, it's a book I haven't FINISHED reading. I use it at least once a week as a mother.

I thought this was a really good resource for parents of trans and gender variant kids. Read this out of general interest, but also cause a friend and I are putting together a training for Pediatric faculty/MDs. I for one thought the stories of parents accepting and loving their kids was real damn tender and inspiring.

Brilliant, factual and extremely helpful. Great overview of gender non-conforming children for their parents and their community to better understand gender identity and expression and what daily life is like in their shoes.
Fantastic book for anyone looking to understand how to support gender non-conforming and trans children and youth. Especially written for parents but relevant for anyone. Repeatedly mentions but glosses over specific issues of race/ethnicity, religion, and other issues that compound the lives of these young people, which isn't terribly surprising in a book that's supposed to be an overview for a general readership. Pick this book up and learn how to make the lives of our fabulous, wonderful, gen...more
This is an interesting book. I only read it because I am dealing with this in the classroom. Really cutting edge information. I borrowed it from the library and only had one chapter to go when my bag was stolen out of my car toady. But I got the idea. Really great info for any family or school whom are dealing with gender issues. Lots of first hand stories that added a lot to the book.
Amazing subject we all need to know more about.
