This is book 2 in the Hell's Eight series and it picks up where book 1 ("Caine's Reckoning") left off. Sam "Wilcard" MacGregor is searching the wild 1858 Texas countryside, trying to track Ari, the sister of Desi (his friend Caine's wife), who was kidnapped by Comancheros in "Caine's Reckoning". He never expects to stumble upon beautiful, fiery, bossy little Isabella Montoya, a woman on the run from the notorious bandito, Tejala.

Bella's been on the run for months, trying to avoid capture by Tejala and his men. It seems that Bella's parents had been forced under duress to promise her in marriage to the vile Tejala. But Bella wants no part of him--she only wants a man of her choosing.

Sam, being a Texas Ranger, wants to escort her back home, while still keeping a lookout for Ari. But getting her back home is not as easy as it sounds. Tejala controls a lot of the Texas territory, and many people are under his thumb. Sam must fight off many attempts on his life while trying to protect Bella, or as he calls her, Duchess. And he must fight the growing feelings he has for the feisty spitfire.

Sam and Bella are pure magic together. There's lots of verbal sparring, tremendous sexual tension, and plenty of violence as Sam does everything in his power to escort Bella back home, where he hopes she will be safe from the evil Tejala. What he doesn't expect is to fall in love with her. But of course, Sam is one of those heroes who doesn't think he's good enough for the heroine, or that he deserves a HEA. So it's up to the somewhat pampered, aristocratic, yet very brave Bella to set him straight. She adores Sam, and won't let him ride off into the sunset without a fight.

The book builds to a dramatic conclusion with Tejala, coming very close to being heartbreaking. It takes a very brave move on Bella's part to save the day, and convince Sam that he deserves a HEA after all.

For those who care to know, this book is not laced with one sexual scene after another. The story comes first, but the few scenes(maybe 5) that there are are very hot, erotic, yet loving in nature and very satisfying. You can really sense the H/H are falling in love. And what's not to love about Sam? Not only is he handsome, sexy, and ultra protective, but also lonely and vulnerable, with a heartbreaking past. And Bella is no slouch either. Brave and beautiful, with a temperment that perfectly compliments Sam's. I was really hoping it would all work out for them in the end!

The story also introduces Tucker, another member of Hell's Eight, who I am sure will get his own story as he takes up the task of looking for the missing Ari. I look forward to reading the continuing adventures in this fine series!(less)

This book kinda lumbered along for me. For the first 300 pages, I felt like I was reading the same scenes over and over again. The last 100 pages picked up a bit, but this book just never really hooked me. It wasn't bad in any sense, just rather average.

Sam MacGregor is out on a mission searching for a missing woman (Ari, sister of the heroine in book 1) when he stumbles upon a caravan that was attacked by bandits. He thinks all were killed when he finds a woman still alive and hiding. Isabella Montoya is on the run to keep her freedom. Cruel, immoral Tejala is determined to have her as his, but Bella wants no part of him so she goes on the run. Sam offers his protection until Tejala can be dealt with. So the two start traveling together. There is attraction between them and Bella, who believes capture by Tejala is inevitable, decides she'd rather give her innocence to Sam by her own choice. Sam doesn't go alone so easily. He wants her, but his conscience argues with him. Eventually he gives in, but Sam believes that once Bella is free of the threat of Tejala she'll no longer want him. It's up to Bella to convince him otherwise.

I don't in any way consider this a bad book, but I didn't necessarily find it to be a good book. For one, nothing about it stood out for me. The characters were just kind of there, the romance fairly average, and the storyline a little blah. And second, there were just too many things that I didn't particularly like that kept if from being more than average.

The first 300 pages were rather boring and rather repetitive. Bella and Sam travel, exchange sexual advances, and fight some bad guys. Then lather, rinse, repeat. I just wanted the story to get on already. And what was up with all the violence in this book? I mean, sheesh, it had a body count higher than an old school slasher flick.

And some scenes really dragged, especially some of the sexual ones. I think one scene is like 30 or so pages of foreplay. I actually put it down in the middle and went to sleep for the night.

Bell and Sam are okay as characters. Though I must admit something about Bella tweaked my buttons the wrong way. I didn't really like the sort of casual bickering that was constant between them.

There are also some logic/reality issues. Bella was awfully put together for someone who'd been in the wilderness for six months. She should have been a bit ragged and worn down. I mean, she was gently bred after all, not a frontier woman. And second, why in the world would Sam just leave her at her family's ranch the way he did when someone was after her? I just thought that was rather ridiculous. It was so obvious something bad was going to happen.

But I think one of the things I disliked most about the book was that it's a Hell's Eight story, yet I felt like the author did a really poor job integrating that theme. Except for Tucker's involvement in the last chunk of the book, the extent of it is just Sam saying "I'm Hell's Eight" or something to that effect numerous times. From reading book 1 I knew in general what that was, but if I'm remembering right, there's no explanation at all as to what exactly Hell's Eight is in this book. That didn't make sense to me. It makes the whole concept very nebulous. And for a group that is supposed to be very tightly bonded, it was weird that the rest were so completely uninvolved. For a book in a series, I want it to feel more like part of the series.

So I found this installment a bit of a disappointment. I just didn't really connect with the story. But it wasn't horrible. I didn't have trouble finishing it. I just didn't love it, or like it a lot in any way.

WARNING, this book contains: explicit sex, explicit language, anal sex, mildly used bondage & spanking, a "cozy" scene on a horse, quite a bit of violence, and an attempted rape scene.(less)

If you like the strong and silent alpha (not brooding, just not Chatty Charlie) and one firecracker of a heroine then this is a must read! Sam’s Creed is an excellent story whether you like western romances or not –and they’re rarely my first pick.

This is sooo much better than Caine’s Reckoning, the first in the Hell’s Eight series. It’s a lot “gentler” in terms of romance and steam but in no way takes away from the sun blistering sex! Very erotic without being one of those “squash the meat” ick...more

This book went into my 'Purgatory' shelf where I send the books that didn't even get finished. Depending on the 'credits' or good reviews it gets, Sam's Creed may get a second chance sometime in the future.

To be fair, the only reason why I've abandoned Sam's Creed is because I got stuck at the deflowering scene. Sarah McCarty is a favorite of mine. I really liked Mac's Law and the Promise series.
I LOVED Caine's Reckoning. Her books sent me into a cycle of reading and re-reading Westerns. Books that I thought I'd outgrown, that I thought I didn't like anymore. She helped me remember how much I love books about the West. Most importantly, it was through her writing that I came to understand romance and erotica as genre I could read.

I fluctuated between 3 to 3.5 stars with this one because now I've read at least five books in a row with this author. She satisfies the smut craving without too many turn-offs. She satisfies the alpha craving.

I think I've stayed somewhat interested for the setting and the initial characterization alone. The scorching sex scenes don't detract from plot premises, but Sarah McCarty doesn't quite "close the deal" as the story rolls on.

So naturally, once I finished Caine’s Reckoning, I began campaigning with Marisa to get me Sam’s Creed, the next in the Hells Eight series. I’ll be honest; I let out a total fan girl squee when it arrived on my doorstep.

Sam “Wildcard” MacGregor is a Texas Ranger. He’s been asked by Desi, one of Hell’s Eight women (and heroine of Caine’s Reckoning), to find her twin, who has been missing for some time. So Sam sets off looking for a blond woman who may or may not have been working as a whore in one of the small towns in the plains of Texas. While searching, he stumbles across a beautiful woman crouching next to what used to be a wagon. The woman is Isabella Montoya, an heiress who is fleeing her family in order to avoid being forcibly married to a man named Tejala, who is a criminal kingpin in the area. She is in considerable trouble, and being an honorable man, Sam resolves to return her to her family safely.

Isabella’s attraction to Sam is immediate. He is gruff and rough, and yet at the same time takes sweet care of both Isabella and the animals in his care. As for Sam, he is undeniably attracted to Isabella, but has no intention of taking advantage of her obvious innocence and youth. All he wants to do is get her home, and get on with fulfilling his promise to Desi. But Isabella is in more trouble than he expected, needing constant protection from a Tejala, the man who wants her back in his possession to marry. Even more than that, he doesn’t count on how much Isabella wants him.

This book has exciting action and funny dialog, it’s also chock full of incredible sexual tension and tremendously hot encounters. The heroine, Isabella, is almost a little too feisty for my taste, but Sam makes up for any small deficiencies by being superbly written. He’s strong, resourceful, protective, and demanding, which makes him the perfect hero in my mind. This is a book full of action and excitement (in more ways than one), I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I feel I could cut and paste my review of book 1 in the series, Caine's Reckoning. However, I did like this one better. It is a solid 3 with me.

Again, I really wanted to like it, to love it. I liked the characters, their backstory, the settings but the writing was a problem with me. Maybe not so much the writing but the lack of editing. This author needs an agressive editor and this book could have been 100 pages shorter.

OMG this is such a compelling story!. I preferred this to Caine's Reckoning, largely because of the heroine, who is spunky, arrogant, and likeable, but the plot was also very creative: a woman prized for her virginity by an evil outlaw desperately tries to lose it to spite him. C’est donc pendant sa fuite qu’elle va rencontrer Sam, le Texas Ranger dont la réputation de tueur et de séducteur n’est plus à faire. Afin de la mettre à l’abri, ils vont chevaucher quelques jours ensembles, et arrivera ce qui doit arriver…
A première vue, rien de nouveau par rapport au premier tome, donc un peu de déception à ce niveau-là. Les deux héros vont se rapprocher progressivement (enfin, très vite quand même, c’est un Spicy voyons !), avec la fille qui va vite se consumer d’amour pour le beau Ranger (je ne lui jetterai pas la pierre…) et le cowboy sexy qui tente par tous les moyens de la tenir à distance (tout est relatif, je répète c’est un Spicy, les mesures de distance sont tronquées dans ces cas-là !) pour ne pas tomber amoureux.
Là où, heureusement, les choses diffèrent un peu c’est au niveau du caractère des personnages. Enfin, du personnage féminin, parce que Sam (que j’aime beaucoup) n’est ni plus ni moins qu’une copie plus ou moins exacte de Caine, ne leurrons personne. C’est plutôt Bella qui détonne, avec son caractère bien trempé de petite fille gâtée (et qui peut énerver par moment même) et sa farouche envie de séduire le beau Sam. Elle va s’évertuer pendant tout leur voyage à le mettre dans son lit (enfin dans son sac de couchage, sous sa jupe etc...) ! J’ai bien aimé cette inversion des rôles qui offre un peu de nouveauté.
Comme le titre l’indique, en plus d’être un moyen de survie, le voyage que vont effectuer les deux héros va vite avoir une dimension initiatique. Isabella, jeune fille de bonne famille et innocente, va découvrir dans les bras de Sam tous (je dis bien TOUS !) les plaisirs qu’elle n’aurait même pas imaginé ! Et c’est toujours avec un peu de surprise et de dubitation que l’on suit l’incroyable aptitude d’Isabella dans son apprentissage (oui, je me répète, mais oui c’est un Spicy). Et là on craque encore une fois pour ce charmant, tendre, fougueux passionné, autoritaire, dominant Ranger… Tous les petits défauts du récit se gomment comme par magie dès que Sam entre en scène (Spicy !Spicy !). Leur relation est magnifiquement belle, touchante et enflammée. Même si j’ai plusieurs fois été surprise par quelques scènes… notamment certaines à cheval et certaines scènes hot entre deux tueries (il faut croire que de tuer du méchant ça galvanise, ça excite !), j’ai fondu et soupiré devant tant d’amour.
Pour résumer, ce tome nous dévoile encore un Ranger à vous pâmer, d’une rudesse légendaire mais avec une tendresse et une douceur à faire pâlir d’envie les lectrices, avec à nouveau beaucoup d’aventure, de suspens entre deux (dix) scènes sensuelles (Spicy !Spicy !). Une réussite mais à la fin je suis restée avec quelques questions sans réponses… dommage.

Story and Writing Style
Very easy to read. Fun. Simple enough plot—while looking for Ari, the heroine in “Tracker”, Sam happens upon a deserted wagon with a feisty little Mexican virgin hiding inside. How can that NOT be a recipe for a hot western with even hotter sexual tension?? I listened to this, and this one had a male narrator. I wasn't sure how that was going to work -- I really liked the narrator for Caine's Reckoning -- but ultimately it wasn't very distracting. He did a deep Sam voice really well. His Bella voice was lacking, lol, but it's gotta be hard for a guy with a voice that deep to do a female voice convincingly, lol. Overall, it was a nice listen.

This was such a fun book to read due to Bella. She is definitely not your typical virginal heroine, she has a backbone and a wild side to her, one that tries Sam "Wild Card" Mac Gregor's control. Some of the best parts of the book were their verbal battles, most of which were heavy with sexual innuendo that had you laughing. Il faut savoir que je n'aime pas les romances qui se déroulent dans l'Ouest. Ce livre partait, donc, avec un sérieux handicap. Mais bon, livre acheté= livre à lire. On s'ouvre l'esprit.

After finishing book 1 (Caine’s Reckoning) and really enjoying the world and characters introduced in this series set in Texas in the mid-1800s, I was excited to move on to Sam’s Creed. This story, however, I had such a hard time getting into and caring about. I liked the hero, Sam, well enough and the heroine Bella, had me chuckling with her attempts at trying out English slang and swear words, but a lack of plot and story had me ultimately uninterested.

Bella is a virgin with a bad guy, Tejala, wanting to force her into marriage so he can claim her inheritance. She wants nothing to do with this disgusting, evil man and runs away – which is when Sam finds her. His plan is to return her to her home and safety before going out and killing Tejala, who has promised to have her as his own, whether she wants it or not.

The story lost me from the start. The first 60% was so sex-heavy that any plot regarding Tejala was non-existent except for when Bella mentioned him. Bella wanted Sam to take her virginity, period. She wanted to learn everything she could from him (sex, teasing, seduction) and wore down his resolve slowly during the first half of the book. There was a lot of foreplay and finally sex…and that’s about it. I almost DNF’d the book when they got busy on top of a house – for the second time. I kept reading for a couple reasons: I was close to finishing anyway and I really did want to know how Bella’s troubles would be resolved.

Tejala finally makes an appearance on page at the end and Sam, along with Tucker (a member of the Hell’s Eight), fight to save Bella. One trend in this series that I have a hard time reading about is that the women are all put in situations of being tortured, beaten and raped, either in their past and/or present. It worked story-wise for me in Caine’s Reckoning, as the heroine being repeatedly raped and her horrific circumstances happened in the past and off page and not much detail, aside from a nightmare/flashback, was given. I like to read about the characters overcoming horrible situations and not necessarily the situations themselves. Bella finds herself in another vulnerable spot – naked, bound and about to raped (or we’re led to believe this has already happened) when Sam finds and saves her. This trend for the heroines in both books 1 and 2 isn’t something that has me excited to pick up book 3 in the series. I get that this is a rough time and place for women, but I don’t want to see every heroine go through dealing with being raped or having the threat of it hanging over her head.

Nothing really worked for me with this story. The plot felt weak and crammed into the last part of the book. The sex was just too much and it’s disappointing because I did like Bella and Sam as characters, but their story just didn’t grab me. I will come back to this series at some point and give books 3 and 4 a try. I hope the next installments bring us back into the world of the Hell’s Eight, it was an element missing in Sam’s Creed that I really enjoyed reading about in Caine’s Reckoning. (less)

Woohoo I loved this book! The first in the series was good, but I think I liked this one better, maybe because I enjoyed and understood the heroine's perspective more deeply. Sam, one of Hell's Eight, is a tough Texas Ranger, known as a bit of a ladies' man. He rescues Isabella when he finds her trapped under a wagon after a raid.
