Widowed retired policeman Henry Bassett has settled down in a remote country cottage. When his neighborhood milk-woman finds a corpse, Henry goes with her--but the corpse is gone. Then a newcomer to the village is found dead. But the two bodies are very different. Gradually Bassett comes to realize that there are two crimes tangled up in his home territory--one that just happened, and one with historical roots that lead him back to World War II.
One of the paperbacks I picked up at the Friends of the Library book sale to take on trips. Pretty good: about the discovery of a mummy, which immediately disappears. There are also sheep being stolen. Generally, pretty fun.
