Witch
by Marie Brennan
Sequel to Warrior

I ready Warrior yesterday and really enjoyed it so of course the only logical book for me to pick up today was the sequel. I must admit some disappointment in this book though. The plot is still great and the characters are riveting however I feel Brennan stretches herself too thin. In Warrior there are 2 main characters and the perspective flip flops between the two. A few supporting characters stand out in Warrior as well but in Witch it seems more of tho...more

Just finished reading these. I love them! I'm on this new kick where I'm out looking for new authors that haven't got overly popular yet. So I picked these and they were the best I have read in a while. I loved the first one, the second was also really good but I wish the ending was a little longer and a little more in depth. It left a few questions unanswered but it was still really good!

This was better than Warrior. The characters were a bit more differentiated and the plot more compelling. I would have liked more scenes with Mirei and her babydoppelgangers though. I'm a sucker for the woman-warrior/young-warrior mentoring relationship, what can I say? This is why I love Buffy Season 7 so much.

Still some eyeroll-inducing writing, but I heartily congratulate Marie Brennan on writing a book with a perfect set up for overwrought heart-clutching romance and instead opting to go wit...more

Mirage, the Warrior, from book 1 has discovered that she two has a double. This book is told about her double, Mirei. As we rejoin the story, the witch coven is in disarray. There is murder, treachery, and the beginnings of a civil war with rebel witches. It seems that in order for Mirei to come into her full powers she must kill Mirage. Mirage must kill her twin sister to continue to live. By the time you begin reading this book, you become aware that both these womon are unique in their own ri...more

You'd think it'd be difficulty reading about a character that was once two people but is now one person and retain both minds, but it was actually not confusing at all. I don’t even know if I can explain it properly, but I’ll try, its not that Mirie has two voices speaking in her head but that she retains both women memories and histories.

Miryo and Mirage at the end of Doppelganger had successfully found a way to become one person again, immediately becoming the only witch who could achieve void...more

The biggest complaint I have about this book is directed towards my library system, which had this, but not the first book in the series. I quite enjoyed Warrior and Witch, but I think it would have had a much greater impact if I'd read the previous book. I liked the main character, Mirei. I liked the (mostly) egalitarian society that the book is set in (both men and women can be fighters, although only women can be witches, at least traditionally). I like that the characters have to make hard c...more

Sequel to Warrior, which must be read first to understand what's going on. (They're more like one book that was divided into two pieces.) This was an entertaining read and a good conclusion to the duology. Everything was wrapped up well, and while it would be possible for the author to write more in this world, she states she has no current plans to do so. All in all, though, I would recommend these books for anyone who enjoys a good fantasy story.

This is the second book in the Doppleganger series. I will write about both of them here because they are really one book in two volumes, ala LoTR.

I picked up the books on a recommendation from a friend who was at school with her. Her anthropology background is evident throughout the stories, which at their core are about the power of faith and the danger of religion.

Once you get past that Brennan is absolutely an anime nut, and/or loves Japanese food these books are enjoyable, fascinating, an...more

I'm as impressed with this as I was with Warrior. One of many fascinating concepts in these books is the idea of meeting yourself as the product of a different upbringing. A twin, no matter how similar, is a completely different person. A clone is exactly the same person with the same memories. This is different. What would it be like to have grown up as, say, a street urchin, and then met your other self who spent her life at elite schools? You'd understand your other self wel...more

ohmygoodness! This book! I completely take back all the negative things I said about its prequel, Doppelganger. Warrior and Witch is one of *the* best books I have ever read.

Warrior and Witch is brilliant, complex, and has too much awesomeness to contain to one book.

The political, religious and personal complexities and controversies this book focuses on is intense. The character development is simply amazing (Satomi was by and far my favourite character).

And what really is the strength of the...more

Picking up after the events in the first book, "Warrior," this second and final book doesn't mess around. The former doppelganger and witch survived, combining both halves and becoming Mirei. But even though she defeated the witches who were Void-bent on killing her, Mirei's problems have only begun. Dissent among the witches sparks a war: those who believe in the change Mirei has proposed and those who believe she's an abomination.

If there's one thing you can count on, Marie Brennan has no pro...more

At the end of Doppelganger, the witch Miryo and the hunter Mirei joined together to form Mirei, showing the world that there was a way for both witches and doppelgangers to survive. Unfortunately, you cannot change the world without consequences. Although the Void Prime Satomi has accepted Mirei and what her existence means for the witch world, many are still undecided, and a dangerous few view her as an abomination. When a handful of witches take a stand against Mirei’s message, she must embark...more

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature.

I picked up this book because Marie Brennan is a graduate student at Indiana University where I also went to grad school, so I felt a connection there. Overall, Doppelganger is a good debut.

At first the story follows the separate lives of Mirage, a kick-butt warrior who has recently graduated from warrior school and makes her living by being commissioned for various dangerous tasks, and Miryo, a witch who has been in school and has just failed her "final e...more

I liked the first book in this duology because of the twist in the magic system revealed near the end. In this book, the author expanded on the world of the witches. I really enjoyed the political machinations of Satomi and seeing the effect that the twist in the previous book has had on witch society. You generally don't see the theoretical side of magic in fantasy very often. I loved that we got to see theoretical witches enthusiastically working on determining what Mirei's discover...more

I really liked this book. It was a good follow-up novel to Doppelganger, and I do still like the world she’s created. I’m not sure if she plans a third in the set, but I hope so - I would love to see what’s in the Epilogue expanded upon into a novel. The witches have to shake up a lot of their traditions in this book, and exploring the ramifications of those changes would make an interesting tale.

What to say about the book without giving things away… I like the interplay between the characters....more

My review of Warrior

Eclipse and Mirage are bounty hunters. They will track down whomever their job requires them to follow. Their latest assignment has Mirage and Eclipse being commissioned by some witches to go after an extremely powerful witch. For Mirage this will be an interesting journey as she too is a witch. The Primes, a high counsel informs Mirage that the witch she is after is unique. The Primes tell Mirage that when witches are born, a doppelganger is formed. A doppelganger is the wit...more

This is the sequel to Brennan's Doppelganger, and it does a fantastic job of expanding the world and the characters within it. This chapter of the overall story deals with the very fundamentals of magic, politics within the witches' kingdom as well as other realms in their world, and mirroring the main character's own internal struggle, conflict and cooperation between the witches and the Hunters, highly trained mercenaries.

I don't want to say much about the plot of the book, because it would sp...more

I've been waiting for this one ever since I read Brennan's first book, Doppelganger, and it was worth the wait.

Sequels aren't easy to write, but Brennan did a wonderful job. Everything in Warrior & Witch flows out of the events of Doppelganger. The main character, Mirei, has overturned centuries of tradition and religious belief, discovered a new kind of magic, and begun a revolution in how witches and doppelgangers are raised. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy about these changes.

A great follow-up to "Warrior".

When I think about the books (Warrior and Witch), I remember more the overall story line of being true to yourself; to question traditions when there is proof that there may be an alternative course of action; and that, when traditions begin to change, not everyone jumps on board to support the change. The first book (Warrior) follows a young woman's (about 25ish) journey to find an alternative to tradition; the second book (Witch) portrays how a sub-culture of wit...more

Just like in Warrior (Doppleganger, #1), the protagonist is incredibly written, the story is well woven, and the action is intense. It isn't common to come across a woman in a work of fiction who is this well written, who isn't a stereotype, and who isn't doing everything for the sake of love. This story is also love-story free! An intense sequel that picks up very shortly after the first book.

This book is better then the first though it is still lacking in detail the writer keeps you wondering who point of view are you going to see next. I wish she wrote about one of the characters that playied a bigger role in this book then in the first one. The final battle was way to short and I feel there could have been more done to make the story richer. The endind felt cut short but had the feel for another book to follow if the author wanted to go back to the story. If Ibcould give a half st...more

I really appreciated the political intrigue and its parallels to modern politics. Again, the author is extremely clever in imparting emotions and reasons in language - you understand how they are feeling, their reasons and motivations, without exact descriptive language. I hated the ending. It stood in stark contrast to the rest of the novel, and it felt contrived. This book was much more predictable than its predecessor, but still a good read.

This is is the continuation of the story of what happens in Doppleganger. A lot of theory and questioning about the witches beliefs occur. There is a lot of upheaval in the customs of the witches because of Miryo and Mirage, and not everyone agrees with what happened. While most of the witches now believe dopplegangers should not be killed, many believe them to be abominations and disagree. A faction of witches leaves the witch stronghold of Starfall and attack it from outside. War amongst the w...more

As a reader of the first book, Warrior, I give this book much of the same review. One or two editing errors, but otherwise alright grammatically. The story was predictable, but written well with an interesting plot and a different take on religion in fantasy worlds. Many fantasy books suffer from focusing too much on fantasy and creatures, and not much on world detail. This book has more depth than some other fantasy books, and thus is perhaps more enjoyable than the common fantasy novel.

The writing didn't seem to be as fluid in this sequel, but that might only be because I was reading the first edition of the book, before the titles were changed to what they are now. I read the newest edition for the first book. I'm sure there was some revision between the two editions.

The story line was good too, though it seemed really rushed at the end. I was left with a lot of questions. I could have done without the bit of the romance element at the end, but it wasn't as bad as it could ha...more

Mirei is a unique being. Her extraordinary magic makes her the most poweful witch alive; and of course, a notorious social outcast scorned by other witches who call her an abomination. Her friend, Eclipse, is still being held by witches who want absolutely nothing to do with her, and want to kill any and all doppelgangers so that they aren't allowed to meld with their sister witches. The story is long, and there are parts I yawned myself through. However, it was a fitting end to this two part se...more

A pretty solid sequel to Warrior. I didn't really review the first book, but some things in it just didn't grab me -- writing seemed a bit tame for the action, things dragged a bit with all the traveling. Events in Witch moved much better, in my opinion. I think the ending could have been expanded a bit. Overall, though, this is a very good fantasy book.
Kimberly
I actually liked this book better than the first. It was quite exciting from the first page until the last. I wished the end would have had a bit more explanation and a ritual performed, but I thought the ending was pretty good. I like a book that lets you fill in the blanks with your own imagination and it kind of told you what was going to happen through words similar to prophecy.
Tabitha Tomala
Much better than the first but still lacking. Even the most exciting parts of the book just seemed to be dull...she has a long way to go to become a better writer. The concept is awesome, and she did the politics very well. I didn't choke on political crap between the witches. She needs to some how connect the readers more to her characters I found myself kind of distant and not really caring when one would die...

I enjoyed reading the second part to Doppelganger. This book, like the first one, made you want to keep on reading. I really enjoyed the plot of this story. The story was not done yet from the first book, and this was a great continuation. The author did a great job with both books.
