Anyone who has ever loved an old dog will love Old Dogs. In this collection of profiles and photographs, Weingarten and Williamson document the unique appeal of man's best friend in his or her last, and best, years.

This book is a tribute to every dog who has made it to that time of life when the hearing and eyesight begin to go, when the step becomes uncertain, but

Calling all fleabags! As a big fan of geriatric canines, I howled for this book from the moment I heard about it. And, I realized quickly I was barking up the right tree here with purchase of an expensive hardback book in which the authors were clearly not dogging it. I am growling, however, because this book reminds me of my own experiences with old dogs, so I will share my favorite story in this review.

Bought this to give to my parents since we just put our dog to sleep. I had read the introduction online, while our mutt was in his decline, and it was really fitting. Weingarten's humor writing doesn't usually entertain me, but he has written some of the most heartfelt articles I have ever read. When he's on, he really sticks with me.

The introduction and first bit are about Weingarten's own old dog, and is the longest bit. The rest of the book are short snippets about various old an...more

You might tend to want to pick up this book for the cover and you certainly wouldn't be off in that decision but make sure you stick around for the narrative as well, including the introduction. I think it's rare that one can find a book where the photography and the verse are equally matched (honestly can't remember one before this - usually one is better than the other) and when you see how absolutely astonishing these photographs are, you'll see why it's such a compliment to the words.

It's been a year since my dog, Surprise (who was 16 years old) died, and it's not true what they say about time damping your sorrow. I still miss the old boy and I guess I was looking for a kindred soul when I picked up this book. The first few pages recounts the life and death of the author's old dog, Harry, who died at 17, in a touching and memorable tribute only a true dog lover could appreciate, and after browsing through it at the book store I knew I had to have this book. The photos exquis...more

Books about puppies are a dime a dozen. Books about older dogs are much more rare. Having two dogs who are considered seniors, this book grabbed my attention. It was simply marvelous. Many of the vignettes (with accompanying photographs) were humorous, some were poignant, and a few were downright sad. But they all showed these old fellers and gals at their vulnerable and accepting best. I loved it.

If you love old dogs, or just dogs in general, this book was really good. The pics are adorable. The stories were easy and quick. Good coffee table book. Gave me hope that our dog (now 13 and looking much like the dog on the cover) will live to see 16 or 17 like some of the dogs in this book.

Sweet and funny book about some old dogs. Gene Weingarten's humor and the beautiful photos by Michael Williamson capture these dogs for everyone to enjoy. This book makes a perfect gift for anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing an old dog.

This is a sweet little wisp of a book (I read it in one day's commute). After the introduction, the book is composed of a dog photo with a short vignette about the dog.

The introduction was also published in the Washington Post, and is available online here:

Heartwarming tales and portraits of old dogs, suitable for young and old alike. If you have an old dog, this will make you shed a tear or two, but it will also make you laugh a bunch of times.
Mary Bloodworth
If you love old dogs, you must get this book. Weingarten's opening piece about his now deceased dog Harry S Truman alone is worth the price, and the tears and smiles it will give you.

This gem of a book features man's best friend, after the age of 10, and is accompanied by a description of the pet by the "master". The photos are terrific and the words are heartwarming.

Fantastic photos and stories. I laughed. I snickered. I welled-up. I shut the book feeling all warm and fuzzy. Maybe my bi-polar pooch isn't so bad after all. :o)

I'm a sucker for dogs and a big fan of Gene Weingarten, so I read this in the car on the way home from the bookstore. I was not driving--I should point that out. This is a little book of beautiful photos and lovely writing about old dogs. I love it.

A great little book. Especially heartwarming if you've ever had, or known, an old dog. So sweet. Loved the photos and the funny, endearing comments tailored for each dog. I only wish the author could have met my sweet, old boy Bear.

Heartwarming without being sappy. This true book features a beautiful photograph of an old dog on one page and a story about them on the other.
