Paul Auster's first novel, written under a pseudonym. I read it as part of Auster's book Hand To Mouth, where it comprises the final section. If you come to the book via this route though, I would recommend leaving the first section of the book, the titular essay, until last, as it gives away the plot twist. Myself, I read the excellent essay first then the novel.

Having said this, despite having prior warning of events, I enjoyed the novel a lot. The early stages aren't great - some of the tough

Pazienza.

Is this book still in print? 12 or 13 years ago I was a huge fan of Paul Auster's work - and I felt I found a great secret find with this book. So yes Auster wrote this under a different name. He combined his love for baseball and noir fiction. And to be honest I can't remember the story or plot - but I do remember liking it a lot.

(I'm french keep that in mind ;) )

It's actually a great polar novel, the last pages are really strong.
It's interesting to see the resemblance with The New York Trilogy.
The influence of Agatha Christie's work is quite obvious, it made me think of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd a lot. It's a lot of fun.

It's an early work by Paul Auster so worth the read. For all writers everywhere, it's encouraging to see how much better he got at writing with practice!
