On a warm May night in San Francisco, the Ritz-Carlton ballroom shimmers with crystal and silver as a glittering, celebrity-studded crowd gathers for a charity dinner dance. The evening is perfect–until, just minutes before midnight, the room begins to sway. Glass shatters. And as the lights go out, people begin to scream….

In the earthquake’s aftermath, the lives of four s

I am so proud of Derek for going Back to School...but this is how it went...
"Hey, Derek, I'm going to the library. I need a new book on CD for the car."
"Hey, Amanda, I need to study math, so I am going to the library. I will pick out a book for you, baby."
Later, that same day...
"Hey, Amanda. Just got back from the libes. I checked out this book...a Danielle Steel novel."
"Hey, Derek, do you really take me for that kind of girl? I am not a chick-lit kind of girl. I am schematically offended."

This is one of the Best Novels I have read which made me rethink a lot about myself. i learnt from Sarah, The art of making it on my own and the art of forgiveness. There is always a hidden strength in us, which carries us through one of our worst times ever. Never Give Up.. Because the moment you do Failure becomes mandatory. From Melanie, I learnt the importance of having the freedom to make our own decisions. I learnt how much ever of money one has, it cant make you as much happy as volunteer ...more

This was my first Danielle Steel novel and it will be my last. Her writing style drove me crazy. I think the book could have been 100 pages shorter and still gotten her superficial point across.

The characters are all very boxed into whatever their specific character trait is. For example, Melanie is the sweet, humble pop star who has an (unrealistically) over-bearing mother. And we get to hear, during every section of the book in which Melanie appears, that she is sweet and humble and kind....

I used to really enjoy Danielle Steel. This one felt like she hadn't bothered to develop the dialogue and the books events beyond the outline for the book. At times yes, but large portions were repetitive descriptions of "this is what the book is about." It felt like she maintained an observer mode instead of bringing the reader into the feel of each character.
Perhaps I'm more sensitive to how a book is presented at this point. I write non-fiction but am contemplating doing some fiction. So how

This story kind of confused me in all honesty in regards to the plot. I thought the majority of the story was going to be based on the earthquake and it ended up being about the aftermath for the majority of the novel. I felt like the characters were a huge random mess of people that would never be together and kinda found the story in my opinion to seem thrown together and scrambeled.

I mean a nun and a recovering alcoholic; a superstar and an average college grad, it just seemed far fetched to

Some people say that every Danielle Steel book is the same, but I disagree. The same formula is used, and at times the outcome of the stories may be similar, but I think that Ms. Steel comes up with the most interesting and heartwarming reads. At first, I was not sure what to make out of "Amazing Grace" but I was for the most part satisfied. The story takes place in San Francisco and follows four characters who meet at a benefit, but on an unfortunate night, when an earthquake hits town. And iron ...more

After a devastating earthquake, 4 lives became intertwined and changed forever. This book was really well written, definitely had substance, and gave me some things to think about. It's all about forgiveness, taking charge of your life, being happy with your decisions, and just plain loving your life. 5 stars!
I would have finished the book a lot sooner but I had to make the July Maps. When I checked this book out from the lie bury (where I bury all my lies) I was trying to get the book that the movie Amazing Grace is based off (at least I think it's based off a book. It was a coolo movie I watched with Sweet Ashley a few months back when I read Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln). This was a sad/feel good book. The nun Maggie reminds me of one of my coworkers whom I could see bei ...more
Audible Audiobook. Sorry, I get tired of asking the librarians to add the audiobook.

Amazing Grace is just over nine hours of listening, read by Tom Dheere.

Danielle has a tried and true formula, and all of the elements are here. A strong female character. A catastrophic event. Emotions. In Amazing Grace, we’ll do a San Francisco earthquake.

Repeating myself with other Danielle Steel book reviews …. but if you’re a fan, you’ll understand from where I speak :-). Danielle Steel is one of the most pro

I haven't read Danielle Steel before and thought I might enjoy her. Man was I wrong. The overall story was decent but her writing style drove me nuts. The vocabulary was so rudimentary and repetitive I couldn't stand it. There was so much 'he said, she said' mixed in with strange sentence structure I just felt like I was reading a high schoolers midterm the whole time.

As far as the plot goes, it really bothered me how any character who wanted to go somewhere just hopped on a flight. I'm sorry-

Having read some of the other reviews, I do have to agree it seems unlikely that so many pairs of opposites would end up together after a major earthquake in San Francisco. However, I think it shows that opposites can attract, and if one keeps their mind open, they are likely to follow new adventures, meet new people, and be introduced to cultures and other 'ways of life'. Sometimes when the worse things happen (earthquakes, illness, fraud), we do find the strength to come out the other end in a ...more

About every 3-4 months I pick up a Danielle Steel book. Sometimes it brings me back to my college years (when that is all I read) and other times it reminds me why I only pick one up every 3-4 months. This one was the later. It was so promising. I am a fan of the individual people coming together and seeing how the relationships build and grow especially under duress which this was, however to me it didn't flow the way it should have and the ending was definitely not what I wanted or would have ...more

Sarah Sloane is a San Francisco socialite who thinks her life is perfect. She has a husband she loves, 2 children she adores, and they are wealthy. She has put together a charity auction dinner at the Ritz to raise money for the local hospital that saved the life of her older child when the child was born premature. She arranged for Melanie, one of the country's top singers, to donate a performance to add to the glitz of the event. The event is going better than even Sarah's high expectations un ...more

Lives are tied together through the force of a San Francisco earthquake. Melanie Free, one of the top young singers, is doing a charity benefit in San Francisco when a massive earthquake leaves her and her entourage in the city for weeks. While her group is stuck at the shelter, she volunteers at a field hospital and meets Maggie, a Converse-wearing nun, who was also at the benefit. Meanwhile, Maggie meets Everett, a journalist from LA, and they quickly form a close bond. And Sarah, the head of ...more

Recommends it for: Dada
The characters didn't feel real to me. Catholicism wasn't portrayed very accurately (it sounded more like Protestantism, or some denomination of it) but I won't condemn Danielle Steel for it; some really intense research has to be done if you want to truly accomplish a feat like portraying a second Mother Teresa.

Perhaps there were too many relationships appearing in this novel; that might be why there wasn't much space to really go in depth into the characters and their interactions. I liked Mel

On a warm night in May, in San Francisco, California, a glittering crowd gathers for a charity dinner dance. A celebrity headliner, a gorgeous venue, and the sparkle of the good life promise a wonderful and profitable evening.

Sarah Sloane, the wife of a wealthy hedge fund manager, is the hostess. And she knows just how to excel at bringing successful events to fruition.

But before the night is over, everything about her life and the lives of all those attending will be upended. A shake, the horri

This is the first Danielle Steel novel I have ever read. I wasn't sure what to expect, and am embarrassed to admit I thought it was some romance-type novel. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that wasn't the case.

This book was given to me by a friend after she had finished with it. I love to read so much that I decided to go ahead and take it - along with a slew of other books. I'm glad I did. This was a compelling story with many very interesting characters.

My only complaint is that

This was my first exposure to this prolific and well known author’s works. I was drawn to this story primarily because of its setting. I was born and raised in Northern California where San Francisco is commonly referred to as “The City”. I have spent many wonderful hours exploring the environs of “Baghdad by the Bay”. Hence I was most familiar with the areas mentioned in this novel.

I was also drawn to the plot of this book. There are four central characters around which this story is woven. Sa
I read this book because we were getting ready to move to SF and I had never been there, so I was hungry for any information that I could find about the city, fact or fiction, that would make me feel more familiar with it once I arrived. I am not a typical Danielle Steele fan - not that I don't like her, I just don't choose her books for some reason - too mainstream for my liking I guess. However, I found myself totally engrossed in this story and wondering why I don't read more books by DS. I b ...more

This is the second Danielle Steel book I have ever read and although it's not as bad as the first one I gave an awful review to, A Good Woman, it still wasn't great. I have no idea why this author is as famous as she is.

Good thing this book had 4 principles in it and not one because every character she has, I could care less about. She seems to not be able to build characters up at all. Every character is so Lilly white and perfect. Doesn't she get tired writing about boring people? I sure am ti
