When I found this particular well-regarded biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the library of my roommate, I found it necessary to put on my reading list, although it proved a difficult book for me to read.  This is not due to anything wrong with the book itself--Bosanquet's prose is lovely and thoughtful, and Bonhoeffer himself is a subject well worth the writing of many people [1], but rather due to the demands of time, the closeness of the text in requiring sustained attention and focus ...more

I had purchased the Eric Metaxas biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, "Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy" but had not begun to read it when the flurry of reviews, pro and (mostly) con convinced me that it was not where I wanted to begin my serious encounter with this great spiritual hero. Mary Bosanquet's book was on the shelves of books at Good Shepherd Baptist Church left by previous pastors and so I decided to start here.

The early chapters of the book, while full of good background material about Ger

If I ever thought I was inspired by anyone before, I feel like I am discovering all over again what it truly means to be be inspired by someone, to appreciate, admire, and love them as indefatigable people. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was just thought. He grew up in the theologically tormented culture of Europe during the 20th century. God pursued him el qanna, and he was saved. They were both of them relentless. Bonhoeffer's spiritual journey was at times dark, hitting the lowest valleys. But he was ...more

This book is one of the best biographies I have ever read. Bosanquet strikes a great balance between Bonhoeffer's upbringing, his intellectual and theological development, and his struggle with Nazi Germany. I was significantly impacted by Bonhoeffer's spiritual development, which in most ways went totally against the spirit of the age. The Bonhoeffer that Bosanquet presents is truly a 20th century pilgrim. He wrestles with His faith until he finds a way to authentically express it with all his ...more

Excellent book that introduces you to Dietrich Bonhoeffer - offers great insight into what Dietrich Bonhoeffer was all about. Excellent interviews with friends, students, family members. One friend, Eberhard Bethge, was interviewed by the author. He is the person who saved much of Bonhoeffer's writings so that we have access to Bonhoeffer today. Also offers the good and bad - does not present a holier than thou view. An excellent book!

One of the most inspirational theologians whose life and theology is explored in this biography against the back-drop of Nazi Germany. Reads like a thriller. Huge insightful and inspiring.
