Above and Beyond opens with Kyla giving birth to her son Aaron and then getting the news that her Marine husband may have died in a blast.
In another place Trevor finds himself in a hospital, injured, his eyes bandaged and finding out that he survived the blast, while Kyla's husband who gave him his bunk didn't.

Trevor reads the letters Kyla wrote to Richard, her likes, her love for him, the way she despised him "Smooch" and his smooth-talking ways with women and falls for her and also feels an ob...more

This was the first book I’ve read from Sandra Brown. From the goodreads reviews I got the sense this would be a good romance. Oh boy, was I wrong!
Let’s start with the cover. It is written there that this is a “Classic love story”. This book is not a classic! Maybe I can consider it a classic Harlequin Romance.
The love letters promoted in the intro were corny, drowsy and lacking. The love story was really creepy. I had hard time imagining a romance with a man who became obsessed with a woman he...more
Once Upon
Being a huge supporter of military families and the life of sacrifice that they live, I was hooked by this story from the first line. I always fear for my guys when they get deployed and leave behind their families, especially those with pregnant wives. I pray for a safe return and for them to be blessed with the chance to hold their unborn babies upon their return.

In Above and Beyond, Sandra Brown writes about the reality of life when that loved one does not return from deployment because the w...more

I have to admit, I didn't actually finish this book - I usually love her books, but had a prob with this one. Knowing the love letters belonged to his former dead team mate and wife, he should have left them alone and returned them to her (the wife) when he got out of the hospital/rehab and moved to the same state where she was, instead of reading them and falling in love with her. Upon arriving in her area, he should have introduced himself, and given her with her dec'd husband's letters - inst...more

I like to alternate my reading experiences with various genres, and now and then I hope to find the ultimate romantic story. So I started Sandra Brown’s Above & Beyond with optimism, but soon found out that it was a very lightweight attempt. Luckily it was also a rather small book and it only took me 2 to 3 evenings to get through it. There were bits in the story that were a tiny bit compelling, especially when they involved Trevor and the little boy, Aaron. I like to see a man who's patient...more

Upon first listening to the narrator Jack Garrett I couldn't help a smile and a giggle. His voice is so very 1990's Danielle Steel-ish. Smooth and sexy. I knew this book was going to be fun.
The dialogue is a bit dated. Really. Nobody talks like that. Not even in their inner dialogue they aren't that cheesy, but that doesn't mean that the story line isn't good. It just took a bit of getting used to. Once I was acquainted with the narrator and the feeling of this story we were off and running.

(actual edition listened by Playaway digital audio, 9.5hrs)

The brief introduction was a grabber (military husband dies in duty, pregnant wife at home, husband's military buddy badly injured, clinging to life, reads wife's love letters, and falls in love with her)! My ears were definitely glued to the earphones. Then not too long into the story, Trevor had to be a louse and lied to Kyla from day one. Not a good way to start a relationship so I didn't see a good ending. I was not liking Trevor's s...more

I bought it at a book sale and fell in love with it.

Trevor 'Smootch' Rule is a lady's man. While doing a tour of duty at the Egyptian embassy as a marine, he made friends with Richard, who was married and expecting his first child. They were friends: Smootch kept Richard's letters safe in a steel box in his locker, and when Smootch got plastered, Richard hauled him into his own bunk, and took Smootch's top bunk. Then the embassy was bombed. Richard (on top) was killed. Smootch (in Richard's bunk...more

Kyla was annoying, Bab was annoying, Trevor was annoying AND he had a mustache. Aaron was such a perfect baby/character though.
Kyla was the kind of a woman who would lie to herself "no I don't love him, no I don't like him, richard richard bla bla bla.." she didn't face her feelings for trevor.
On the other hand Trevor was awkward, he had no right to hide his secret AND he had no right to have a freaking mustache, I guess having a mustache used to give a guy more attractive appeal back then "80s...more

This book awful. I was really surprised because I really like Sandra Brown's work, however, I found the plot to be very creepy and the characters unlikeable. This book will leave you frustrated and annoyed. Skip over it.

This book was good but kind of predicable. Still Sandra Brown has a way of keeping you captivated

Typical Sandra Brown novel -a chick story. A beach book. I read in one day.

A great book. Deffantly in the top 5 of my Sandra Brown books. This was the second Brown book that I read, and picked it because it had a soldier in it. I know the bit of falling in love from another man's love letters is a bit crazy, but there is something oddly romantic about it. I mean he fell inlove with a women by how she wrote. I absolutly loved the end of this book when Kyla threw the letter Trevor was reading into the fire, it was pure perfection. I loved every minute of this book!

I enjoyed listening to this story. Trevor was a terrific guy, even though he was not up front with Kyla as to exactly who he was. I could understand to a degree why Kyla wanted to be faithful to the memory of Richard but I would have preferred if it had been discussed that just because she may fall in love with another does not mean she would forget the love she had for Richard. It had a happy ending and for me that's important

I really liked Trevor, i just wish he hadn't deceived Kyla. I really feel like if he would have been up front with her they would have ended the same place. I wish the book was longer just because I wanted more out of the characters but i liked it.

Reread 5/23/12
The writing is still good. But this time around I was slightly bored with the going ons.

I'm always a sucker for a romance where the male is a military guy. While I think Brown's romantic suspense are also solid three stars I feel I should say that her romance are also solid three stars but in a different way. It's all about what you are looking for... If you are looking for either, she won't let you down.

Great story. I read this book about 10 years ago and have been looking for the title ever since. I got it from amazon and finished in one night. Kyla's story is devastating, and now that I've re-read it the writing is a little dull and repetitive at times. Nonetheless you get wrapped up in it. It's a light easy read.
Bani
I didn't love it. Not really one of her best works. For me there wasn't as much emotion although the whole I-can't-forget-about-my-husband inner conflict that Kyla goes through was interesting. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt, perhaps a couple more pages to tie it up wouldve been better but not a bad book
Emily
I almost felt guilty reading this, but it sucked me in. It was way too in detail on the romance part, but that came after I was into the story. I had to finish it to see what happened and how it ended. I loved How sweet Trevor was to Kyla and Aaron. Definitely for adults only.
