Harsh, senseless world!! I never knew how meaningless man's pursuits could be until I read this book. Amazing in the sense of the ingenuity of Cortez and his army in conquering the Aztecs, but completely sad in the depictions and methods of destruction that the Spanish employed to make it happen. Although, the Aztecs where pretty bad themselves with their incessant human sacrifice, which was one of the reasons Cortez and his men felt obliged to do what they did - not to mention the GOLD!

The story is well known among those who study history but the style of writing is effective enough to attract people unfamiliar with the conquest of Mexico. The book is filled with great anecdotes and has all the excitement and drama of an action film. One of the best books I read last summer. Not bad for a book I picked while I was boring myself to death at Columbia University.

This was a very interesting book and I feel like I learned a lot about a period in history I knew nothing about. The writing didn't complicate an already complicated subject and the glossary of names at the back helped when I got caught up in all the Aztec names. Interesting, bloody piece of work.

A pleasant book for those unfamiliar with the subject, as I was. This title probably lost points for being "popular" history, but for me it was a good introduction to a period I know little about.

A sweeping and majestic history of a clash of civilizations that reshaped the New World. Lots of battles and informations about the Spanish conquistadors and the Aztec's and surrounding tribes.

Great book! Very informative of not only military strategies used but also cultural/social climates of both the Spanish and the Aztecs. Easy to read compared to other historical books.

This is is the second book -the first one was "The Broken Spears" - I have read on the Aztecs and Hernán Cortés. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in this amazing moment in history. It is written like a novel which helps keep your attention but is also very well referenced with extensive footnotes, appendices/xes, etc. giving you plenty of information to continue researching for yourself. Buddy Levy's descriptions really helped me visualize these amazing eve...more

Conquistador gives you a vivid and detailed illustration of a historic human encounter between two worlds colliding in full momentum. The story of a powerful empire unknown to the western hemisphere, the Aztecs, and the thirst of a Spaniard looking for gold, glory, in the name of God, Hernan Cortes. This is an excellent book to read, if you want to understand historical human interactions and the making of a new culture, after the death of another.

The parts I could get into were interesting, but I just wasn't as interested as I hoped I would be.

recommends it for: Anyone, but particularly those interested in good history
Excellent book. It really makes the history of the period come alive. Well-footnoted, fascinating and with a real narrative structure to it. One gets a real feel for Cortes and his band of marauders, their character, their morals, their drive. The details that come up, great and small, make this a wonderful read. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and will be thinking about it for months to come.

The dramatic style of the author engages the reader well. It details well the events leading up to the fall of Montezuma and the Aztecs.

My only small problem is that it almost engages too well. I found myself hoping that the Aztecs would find some way to repulse los conquistadores. It is easy to get wrapped up in the drama and temporarily forget that the conclusion is not in doubt.

The story of Cortes and Montezuma is such a sad and perplexing one, as I guess all stories of manifest destiny must be. I still marvel at the idea of a Mexico City rising on a mountainside, surrounding by lakes in every direction. A sort of, 'If you build it, they will come,' I guess.

This book was good, and I would recommend it to readers interested in the general subject. I did not learn much from this book that I hadn't already found in other sources, so it was a bit repetitive for me.
