Wendy Lesser writes eloquently about her life, education, experiences: there's chapters on philanthropy, serving on an NEA awards board, choreographer Mark Morris, theatre director Stephen Dandry, poet Thom Gunn, and her cat Ralph, among others. Occasionally, Ifound the writing too precious, but, more often, I responded positively to The Amateur. "The Elegy for Mario Savio" is a beautiful, inspiring essay. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the New York Public Library's Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers.
