My Review of BAREFOOT: A NOVEL by Elin Hilderbrand

What chick lit novel set in magnificent Nantucket with three women spending the summer there and a young hunk thrown in would not be a fun and sassy read?
STOP! This is Elin Hilderbrand and there is so much more than chick lit here! There is the depth of these characters and their individual personal struggles that you come to care about that makes this so much more than that! Those who cherish close relationships with their friends and shar...more

BAREFOOT ~ A beach house, two sisters, and a girlfriend...Sounds heavenly--relaxing, even with a couple kids in tow…

Now, I can handle a bit of vomit and lost luggage, but Hilderbrand mercilessly tugs at all of my feminine heartstrings; marriage, motherhood, sisterhood, and friendship…oh, and that pesky fear-of-death thing.

Meet the Girls:

Melanie deals with infertility overshadowed by infidelity, and then further complicated with pregnancy — “POW!”
Brenda’s promising acad...more

“Barefoot” is a terrific light summer read. (Of course, just to go against the grain I actually read it in November I believe.) The story is well written and the characters are likeable.

Did “Barefoot” cause me to do any soul-searching, or reveal hidden truths in a startling way? No. But that isn’t the purpose of this book. (At least not in my opinion.) It tells a wonderful heart-warming (I know it’s an overused cliché, but in this case it’s accurate) story of three sis...more

This book was a great quick read! I read it on my honeymoon by the pool in three days!! The characters are developed well and the plot keeps moving by having a few subplots that keep the reader wanting more.

The story begins as three women (two sisters and a friend) and two young boys get off a plane on the island of Nantucket, MA. Each woman has had their own personal tragedy in the past few weeks and are looking for a summer away from the city. Each of them have revelations and life c...more

This was a good novel, but a little slow. It was about 3 women (2 sisters and one best friend) who escaped their dramatic lives for a summer in Nantucket. One sister had two kids and was being treated for lung cancer, the other sister was a college professor who was fired and facing litigation for sleeping with her only male (Australian) student, and the friend was newly pregnant. After trying unsuccessfully for years, she finally conceived only to find that her husband had been cheating on her ...more

A perfect beach read. I guess you could call it chick lit but on more of an upscale level. After about 20 pages I was thoroughly sucked into the book. I have to admit at first I wasn't too fond of the main three characters: the frequently vomiting pregnant friend, the beautiful, self-absorbed younger sister, and the martyred, ill older sister. It seemed like they only tolerated each other and I began to wonder if I would barely be able to tolerate them too but after a while we learn more about t...more

The story of three women and their young, male babysitter unfurls during the hot summer in Nantucket. All of them have a story. Vicki has lung cancer, Brenda, Vicki’s younger sister is in disgrace after having an affair with one of her students and Melanie, Vicki’s friend, is newly pregnant with a long fought for baby, only to discover her husband is having an affair. Josh is a twenty one year old writing student on his summer holidays in the right place at the right time.

Vicki and Brenda ...more

A good cry is so cathartic, no? This book sure did it to me ... cancer, small children, love, affairs, academe, The List of Things That No Longer Matter, the "heart wants what it wants" and so on.

However, the author portrays the "mother" in the worst possible way, or at best the least flattering way, leading one to suppose latent unaddressed issues that are definitely Electra in nature. Yes the author knows how to raise magnificent children ... but her mother did not in...more

This is the story of three women and the trials that life brings to them. It is a bittersweet novel depicting the importance of family and friends when life hits a rough patch. It also demonstrates that one never knows where help might come from. This was a well written fluff novel. It dragged slowly by in certain parts. I felt the end wrapped up too nicely and too neatly for all of the characters. It would be great if life worked in such wonderful ways, but alas I found the ending unreali...more

Hilderbrand's last book, The Love Season, gave us the wonderful character of Marguerite. Her story was one to remember, and I eagerly awaited publication of Barefoot.

Barefoot started off a bit slowly as we were introduced to the three women who headed to Nantucket for the summer, each to deal with the fork-in-the-road crisis of her life. It took me quite a few pages/chapters to settle into this book and was considering setting it aside. Then the story suddenly grabbed me, and I w...more

This one took me a while to get through...I just couldn't get into it really, but hate to put a book down without finishing it! The story kinda dragged for me...and the information about what got the 3 women to this point was slow in coming out (most of it wasn't revealed until halfway through the book). Most of the time I wanted to yell at the women! But the ending was good - it made me cry, too. Overall, an OK book, but not what I was expecting it to be.

I was hooked after the first two pages and couldn't put it down. A wonderful story about three women, each with a her own obstacle to overcome, and Josh, the college student who stumbles into their lives, forever changing them. I just fell in love with Josh! This story tugged at my heartstrings, brought a few tears to my eyes and kept me wanting more. Definitely a great beach/summer read, but nice to enjoy a little Nantucket summer anytime.

This was an amazing book. It took a bit to get into it. I wasn't sure I was going to finish it after the first chapter, but as I read, the characters became more intriguing.
Three women spend the summer together, each one is unhappy about something. You get to know them slowly, and with each chapter you care more about them as they work out solutions, and learn to help each other. By the end, well, I cried.
I hope there is a sequel.

Pretty good so far. Light reading. Story about 2 sisters, a friend of one of the sisters, and that same sister's kids at Nantucket for the summer. That same sister has cancer, her friend is pregnant and has a cheating husband, and the other sister was fired because she had an affair with her college student. Glad I don't have their problems! A college boy becomes the babysitter and so he another main character with his own life story.

Adult book: I listened to this one - sad at parts, loved the Nantucket setting - 3 friends a mom with cancer, her sister who just lost her college teaching job, & her friend who is finally pregnant after trying all sorts of fertility treatments just as she learns of her husbands affair spend a summer on Nantucket sorting out their problems & trying to heal ...
Was always curious about this author & liked her enough to try another...

I finally finished this novel last night (haven't had much time to read lately), and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Initially, the heavy focus on narrative sort of slowed things down. But I hung in there, and I got to know the characters better and then didn't mind the slower pacing as much. If you'd asked me early on, I would've rated this three stars; but by the end, I figured it was worth four.

I LOved this book about two sisters and a sister's best friend returning to Nantucket to their Gran's house buy the sea for the oldest girl to recover from chemo for lung cancer . Each girl is running from her own life changing problems. I sat in my condo by myself crying at the end of this book.I thought about this book long after I turned the last page. I will look forward to reading anything this author writes.

This is such a heart warming book. It is about 2 sisters and 1 friend who go to a beach house in Nantucket to escape the problems they have going on in their own lives. One of the sister's has cancer, one lost her job, and one just found out she is pregant and her husband is having an affair. Elin makes the characters seem so real. You will cry at a couple spots and it you will be sad when the book ends.

A quick, easy read. Good summer, chick lit reading, although it did tend to drag in places. I found it a bit unrealistic -- Vicki has the money to pay a babysitter $20 an hour, which relieves Brenda and allows her to sit and mope and write. Instead of Brenda learning about love through service to her sister. In real life I have a hard time believing that everything can be wrapped up so easily and neatly.
