For a couple of weeks, things have been almost normal for the three Grace children (Jared, Simon and Mallory) - there have been no faerie sightings. But that changes quickly at Mallory's fencing competition and soon Jared is in serious trouble and he has a hard time explaining his actions. But there's even more trouble for Jared and Simon when Mallory disappears. Their search for her will take them to places they never imagined and they begin to wonder if they can fight the monsters by themselve

This story is about Mallory and her twin little brothers Jared and Simon who move to their aunt's country estate with their mother when their parents divorce. They discover a field guide in the house which unlocks a magical world around them and send them through a series of enchanted events.

Let me make one thing clear before starting off: I'm giving this book a 4.5 and not a 4(I do consider this book better than book 2). However, since Good Reads doesn't allow half-points I must make due. Yes, I know in math you round to the nearest unit, but I think putting it at a 5 would've been even MORE deceiving.
Unlike the previous 3 books this one seems to be a bit more abrupt in its beginning and not so much of a feeling of on-the-heels of each other as the previous 3 books. I hav More...

During Mallory's fencing meet, Jerrod comes face to face with himself, only it isn't his twin brother Simon. It's a shape changing creature that is surely up to no good. Jerrod confronts him and faces him down with a knife. At that moment, a teacher walks up behind him. "What's going on here?" she asks.
Uh oh. He's in trouble now. Hours later, after his mom talks to the principal and to the police and he's explained over and over that he was just showing the other kid (who h More...

In the Ironwood tree a mysterious shape-shifter shows up at Mallory's fencing match and before they Simon and Jared know it, their sister disappears, presumably kidnapped. Eager to recover Mallory, the two descend into a strange world, only to find themselves prisoners. They learn about a wicked plan, and you can feel the suspense rising untill you can't wait to know what's next.

The plot intensifies in this book. I also think the characters' personalities are shown better. When Jared yells at Simon when they are descending into the quarry to rescue Mallory from the dwarves I couldn't help but think - "This kid really has anger issues! He needs to speak to a psychologist." And also when their mom was on her cell phone with their dad discussing Jared moving in with him after the "knife incident" I was pretty angry at the mom. I thought - "Wha

After encountering brownies, goblins (both hob- and regular), griffins, sprites, and elves in previous volumes, the Grace children are now ready to take on new fantastical creatures: dwarves, ogres, and mechanical dogs. Jared's disciplinary difficulties increase exponentially when he is caught pulling a (pocket)knife on a younger student, Mallory goes missing, and a sneaky shapeshifter temporarily tranforms the Grace twins into triplets. The "big bad" gets bigger and badder, and the

These three are short, but they were so woven to be one story, that I'm giving them only one review. They are beyond adorable. I adore them and I want to have them for my kids.
And I love how all the races are done, the words in each of them, and how they connect. And the art! How can I not tell you about the art! Half of the fun of moving on through any of the stories is the art that's everywhere, brightening everything.

When Mallory disappears after a school fencing meet, it's up to Jared and Simon to find her. Little do they know, she is trapped with dwarves underground in an offshoot from the classic fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (she's even asleep when they find her, and guess what? The dwarves are miners... haha). Even after they escape, however, the fun still isn't over; their mom is missing and nobody is there to help them but themselves. Will they ever be able to defeat Mulgarath on th

A three-star rating isn't really indicative of how good these books were - I really liked them. I think they probably deserve five stars for a young audience. They are listed as juvenile fiction (which I think the library categorizes as up through fourth grade but I am not sure). As an adult, I really enjoyed reading them- I just could help feeling that they fell far short of the potential of the story. As an adult reader, it was like reading an abridged version of an amazingly wonderful sto

This was my favorite out of the series. The dwarfs are introduced and are really quite interesting. The first BIG tragedy occurs and the children have to find their way through all the chaos. We learn a bit more about Jared, the main character and his brother and sister. Their bond is deep in this book compared to the first 3 where they are all against each other. I like that the authors bring them together, so they HAVE to work together to win. I like that.

In this book, Mallory is very nervous about a fencing match, where she will dual with Chris-the-Captain, a boy she likes. Mrs. Grace, Simon, and Jared go along to watch their sister at the fencing match. While there, Jared notices someone who looks an awful lot like Simon going through his sister's belongings. When Jared tries to go after the Simon look alike, a Jared look alike, Not-Jared, is "caught" with a weapon and the real Jared gets in trouble. Meanwhile, Mallory goes missing. J

This was my favorite book out of all three so far. The story line moved quickly as usual, but the thing I liked most about it is the fact that they kept so many human events, emotions, and situations involved whereas the other books only heavily relied on the paranormal to move the plot line forward. I will definitely read the final book, even though the books aren't my absolute favorites, they are still enjoyable and I have plenty of students who will gobble this whole series up!

Perhaps my favorite of the series so far, this one moves along at fast clip. So what if a character appears and isn't explained? So what if the dwarfs aren't much explained?
Because each volume is short and there are plenty of side characters, some don't make it into each book - aunt Lucinda, Hogsqueal, Thimbletack. While my child doesn't mind, I missed seeing them and am feeling like the continuity of the books suffers for their absence.

Summary: Life gets increasingly complicated for the twins when faeries abduct their sister.
Things I Liked: Diterlizzi's exceptional illustrations. The character of Mallory.
Things I Didn't Like: The sudden multiplication of fantastic denizens in this book feels abrupt and untruthful. The lack of tension and often predictable plotting make this volume less enjoyable than previous outings.

So far this is my least favorite in the Spiderwick series of books. The storyline seems disjointed and rushed. The twins find themselves underground trying to rescue Mallory from the dwarves who are helping the goblins. It just seemed like the authors rushed through this book to get to the finale. A lot of characters and plots are left to the reader to figure out. Just a overall disappointment to me.

The first part of the book didn't pick up the pace as quickly as the others. Book three ended in a way that felt very much like a cliffhanger, yet there is no follow up to that storyline. Too much time was spent in the real world. But once the children made it to the quarry of the dwarves, things turned around wonderfully. Again the descriptions were magnificent. The ironwood tree. Another thing I liked very much was the expansion of the dwarve's handiwork as metalsmiths to include intricate

This book was much more action-packed than the last one in the series, and also the one book that was left out of the movie adaptation. I can definitely see why it was omitted. The three characters encounter a creepy doppelganger, immortal dwarves who want to remake the world in metal, and have to save their sister from a Snow White fate.
While I enjoyed reading this book, I raced through it trying to get to the final book in the series.

Well, one more to go. I'm looking forward to book 5 and am hoping that it really is the conclusion. These books are just creepy enough for the younger set; although there was a dwarf massacre in this installment (which may be pushing it for some). I also think that, except for Simon, the kids have really bad attitudes. While they are not awful, these books do not by any means make my "must read" list.

Buku ke-4. Masih seperti kerupuk dengan saus kacangnya sate ayam...
Enak, tapi bikin bingung.
Dwarf. Ada dwarf, tapi sejak kapan dwarf dan goblin temenan???
Plus naga pula. Jiah, naganya jelek. Wyrm baru tepat, tapi kok diterjemahkan jadi naga seh???
Dan ada adegan perkelahian Griffin versus wyrm. Dan gw baru tau, wyrm ternyata sukaaa susu.

Definitely some mid-read editing of certain language. Nothing outrageous, just some "stupids" and "hates" that I'd rather hear later rather than sooner from my 5 year old. Since she's younger than the intended audience, not a big deal. Some suspense and illustrations that were a bit much for the 5 y/o as well, but overall an exciting read.

Mallory is snatched by some goblins and her brothers go after and try to rescue her. They meet the king who has a dream of conquering the world and re-creating it in metal. Towards the end of the book Mulgarath shows up - he's got his hands on "the Fieldguide" - and destroy the goblins. The ending is a real cliff-hanger.

Ooh, the storyline gets deeper and darker. Not too deep or too dark, though.
May I just take this moment to say that I really like the mainest of the 3 main characters: Jared Grace. I can relate to his struggles with anger and self-control and ... learning to be himself. All of the characters are well done, actually.

Although it is very short in comparison to other novels I have read, there are many things that I really like about the Spiderwick Chronicles.
I have always enjoyed fantasy books of all kinds, and not only those that span to be 500 pages or so (although I can't complain much when they do.) What's nice about this series, however, is the focus on the more aged view of fairies. Rather than a bunch of miniature girls in pink sparky dresses and such, they are a more realistic take on the fa More...
