someone really fond of outdated, sexist suspense novels
This book really took some work and determination to get through. The descriptions are so frequent and dense that reading through them can be challenging...I know that the author's just trying to set the stage/ describe the setting thoroughly...but it wasn't really enjoyable.
Oddly enough, despite all her other descriptions, the author never gives a description of the main character, and barely one of her husband, one of the other main characters. Perhaps she was aiming for an "every wom...more

horse people, mystery people, anyone who likes a story with a plot
This is one of the few books that I wish I could tack a couple of stars onto.
While dated (it was written back in the 60's) it stands the test of time and is still a good story.
This is a mystery that revolves around an old piebald (spotted for non-horse people) attached to a small circus. The horse turns out to be a frog prince, waiting to have his curse broken. There are various adventures along the way involving the mere humans in the story (sorry, can we all guess who I think is the ...more

3&1/2 stars. This is the fourth Mary Stewart book I've read now, and I liked this one second-best to the Moonspinners. The plot suffers a lot from coincidentalitis (the heroine is traveling with a boy who's an expert on the exact thing the heroine's husband has become entangled in, which relates to Austrian horse trainers?!) but it's fun if you take it for what it is, a silly adventure. There's some exciting sequences and one genuinely unexpected plot twist.
There's also a fair bit of 196...more

romance

Vanessa March discovers that her husband, who is supposed to be in Stockholm on business, is actually in Vienna, and she sets off to find him, accompanied only by teenager Timothy, who is intent upon getting away from his mother. Adventure follows, but it's the characters, especially Vanessa and Timothy, that make this novel so much fun.

Another good one. I find there aren't many bad Mary Stewart books, just some that are less good than others. The heroine is very spunky and fun. She is a lot of fun to read. There are a couple embarrassing moments for her, but she comes through them easily. Excellent romance. The very beginning is bit slow, but it picks up fast.

I bought a 1965 edition of this for the cover and because it centers around the Lippizaner stallions in Vienna.

Fun mystery/adventure book. Definately an older style - but I enjoyed it.
