When I was in high school, I discovered these Gothic romances, and they sustained me for several years. After plowing through the ones that were already published, I watched for each new book to arrive. My 5 stars reflect how much I loved them when I was 15! Eventually, Mary Stewart turned to the Arthur saga, about which she wrote some captivating (and captivatingly long) novels, but they couldn't capture my soul like the romances did.

This is another great one that I can read over and over. The beginning is a little slow in adventure plot, but the relationship between Christy and Charles keeps it moving. The great parts are in the details, not the overall, and the details keep me coming back.

I haven't read this for years, but I remember just loving it as a teenager--it seemed so very exotic to be in Damascus! And the mystery surrounding Lady Harriet and Dar Ibrahim seems (in my memory)the most complicated of Mary Stewart's books.

i have re-read this several times and find the descriptions of damascus and the surrounding countryside and the appearance of lady hester stanhope as a peripheral character a great addition to a well-written mystery.
