Set in Angel Falls, a geographically appealing, small anonymous town where the people are the heart of the community. It is a place where everyone knows everyone and where families are raised. It is also a place for escape and where Mikaela Luna find refuge from a painful past. Here she meets Liam Campbell, a quiet man who loves her fully. Here Mikaela nurtures a broken heart, raises a family, and settle into life. It is a life so unlike the former one she has known: a fast, disillusioned world with a man who appears larger than life and has a hold on her heart, despite being the one to break it.

All this changes when an accident puts Mikaela in a coma and her past re-emerges. Suddenly the love Liam and Mikaela share come under scrutiny. Is it enough? Was it ever enough? For Liam, it is a realization that he is unsure he can still settle for a part of his wife's love if she loves another. For Mikaela, it is a realization of taking her husband's love for granted, and her inability to fully love him back because of another man.

In the wake of Mikaela's recovery comes clarity, renewed questions posed through a different perspective, where what was is not what seems and is. The re-appearance of Julian True into her life allows Mikaela to finally come to terms with her past and discover things about herself she has never realized.

The characters are what support and makes the story. Central to the story is Mikaela's family who represent solidity and security in her life. Her husband, Liam loves her, but who has settled for her love with the belief that it is enough. Her children, Jacey and Bret represent her success in motherhood. Her mother Rosa also has a strong presence; her mistakes mirror those of her daughter's except she is in a position to provide wisdom and guidance to her daughter.

The setting and beauty of Angel Falls do more than appeal; they represent a contrast to Mikaela's former life and now. Though small, the town provides peace, serenity and home, a place of acceptance. This in contrast to the big city, where faces are anonymous and lacks the feel of home.

The story itself is simple; there is no family drama concerning infidelity, teenage rebellion and angst or complex issues. But even without these elements, the story remain moving and insightful. Instead, the betrayals are those that are hidden or quietly yearned for. They reside in words unspoken, and feelings withheld. It is the accident that provide Liam and Mikaela the chance to find significance in their love, re-affirm their love, and strengthen the bonds of their family.

Angel Falls was a challenging book to write at the time. In it, the heroine is in a coma for most of the story, and while she in unconscious, she remains central to the plot. This book was, in simplest terms, a love triangle. That was the surface story, at least. Divorce proceedings, surname changes (for herself and her daughter), wedding pictures, family photos and videos, past relationships with friends, places she lived, have all successfully been concealed. All this in spite of the fact that Liam has the means and ability to investigate and find answers, or demand the truth from Mikaela, but never does. How placidly spineless is that?

Obviously Kristin Hannah, the author, assumed that her readers will accept this unlikely scenario as a credible basis for her novel. This is a prime example of how a writer relies on an improbable premise to construct a fictional but true-to-life scenario, hoping that her devoted readers will overlook the flimsiness of her rationale. The second failing of this novel has to do with how Mikaela wakes up from a month long coma to at first only selectively remember events from fifteen years ago. But within a couple of days--miraculously--she overcomes most of her amnesia and can recall recent events and recognize and love Liam and Bret. In real life the victims of such severe amnesia do not experience recoveries within such a short time frame. The third failing is the novel's ho hum maudlin emotionalism and dialogue. After pages and pages it seems so contrived, like fictional paint-by-numbers. The interview with the author in the back of the book only seems to confirm that assessment.(less)

An older title, published in 2000, I actually read the pb version but I don't think that's a big deal.

I really wanted to like this book. I had never read Kristin Hannah's work before.It was a fast read because I wanted to see how it all turned out. I was cautious to pursue another Kristin Hannah book, after listening to an audio CD of Firefly Lane, which made me bawl like a little baby. I wasn't up for that kind of emotional wringer.

But this one intrigued me. A woman goes into a coma, and her husband finds out about the past she hasn't wanted to talk about with him. Not only was her first husband handsome and charming, he's arguably the most famous actor in Hollywood (the fictional Julian True).

But this one intrigued me. A woman goes into a coma, and her husband finds out about the past she hasn't wanted to talk about with him. Not only was her first husband handsome and charming, he's arguably the most famous actor in Hollywood (the fictional Julian True).

It didn't sound half as heart-wrenching as Firefly Lane, so I was willing to give it a shot. It struck me as perhaps tackling some interesting matters, and so I popped it into my car CD player for a listen.

It wasn't what I expected, but, with books, that's a good thing. If I can see the ending coming from chapter 1, why would I keep reading (or, in this case, listening)? It delved deeper than I expected. This isn't merely about a family, stretched to their limits with worry over whether Mom will wake up. Nor is it only about the husband she's kept so carefully hidden, and what that secret means. It turns out, this book is about what love means.

Had the back blurb said that, I don't think I'd've picked it up, though. I hate books about love. The author always seems to be shoe-horning together two characters because he (or she) likes both characters, with no regard for long-term success or whether the reader likes either of them. I feel vaguely insulted for sharing anything in common with either character, usually.

This one didn't have that effect, for which I commend the author. I was satisfied with the ending, and with the reasons why the couple at the end winds up together. I felt like the story was a satisfying one. And it didn't make me cry like a little kid who scraped her knee, thank goodness.

The loss of a star comes from the fact that the narrator had a really annoying way of reading kids' voices, and because it was stylistically similar to another book I read recently, and didn't like as well. If not for those two factors, it would be a five-star.(less)

This book was a quick, emotional read. Kristin Hannah is very good at invoking emotion from her readers. The book itself was lacking something. Angel Falls was just my kind of book. An easy LifeTime-Movie-Like read good for a quiet Saturday night. And that's exactly when I read it, pretty much the whole way through and finished at 4 in the morning. Usually I love Kristin Hannah. I am a very loyal reader and once I find someone I gravitate toward I read as much of their work as I can.

This is my 5th or 6th Hannah book and I don't know if it's her or me but, she's slipping. The first book of her's that I read was "The Magic Hour" and I remember it being a profound, well written story and from then on I was hooked.

This is my 5th or 6th Hannah book and I don't know if it's her or me but, she's slipping. The first book of her's that I read was "The Magic Hour" and I remember it being a profound, well written story and from then on I was hooked.

My biggest problem with this book is that it's not her typical storytelling, it was a virtual "who's who" of faith and god and prayer. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find that it's sitting on the shelves at Family Christian Store. It's not so much that religion was a part, it's that religion was a HUGE part for at least the first 10 chapters. Something catastrophic has happened and all we are hearing is "pray, hope, god". There was very little time spent on character development and ultimately I just didn't really have an emotional connection with these characters.

The story at times had a piece-meal feeling. Like it occurred to her mid sentence to add something random and she did just that.

Her husband struck me as a weak man who lived his life for everyone else. Even when it came to his children and the situation with her former husband, I kept waiting for him to "man up" and he just never did. Especially at the end, he really made a bad choice at the end, in my opinion.

The main character, Mike had no appreciation for this great life that she had. She literally did what she wanted when she wanted and took everyone for granted. She was always hanging onto that "last thread" and quite frankly I was disappointed in the ending. Liam should have been a little more realistic to that ungrateful harpy.

Julian was about the most realistic character only because he's exactly what I imagine someone like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt is in real life - completely self absorbed and oblivious to any sense of reality.

It just fell flat for me. Eventually we were able to move on from the "faithful" part of the book but it didn't really take off from there. Mike's introduction back into reality and her memories was a little fake and rushed considering the severity of her injuries.

Usually I try not to be so scathing but this one was a real stinker. I'n almost done with "Between Sisters" so maybe she can recover with that one in my eyes.(less)

I really liked this book. I appreciated the love that Liam had for his wife Mikaela-- especially when she was still hoping that her 1st love, Julian, who was the Brad Pitt of Hollywood, would come back for her.

I find it very hard to believe that no on in town realized the lady married to the son of the town founder used to be in tabloids. I find it very hard to fathom that once he shows up in town, no one figures out why he's there as well as the obvious paternity of Mikaela's oldest child, Juliana Celeste (Jacey). I find it very hard to believe that the famous movie star meets a poor girl in a diner and can't stop thinking about her, so marries her, then leaves her, but still she's the only woman he's ever loved.
Despite the very obvious need for a suspension of disbelief in order to read this book, I found I couldn't put it down. I can't figure out why. The writing isn't all that great (see also: Mikaela's mother's dialogue being loaded with Spanish words, but only when they're so similar to their English counterparts that the average reader obviously knows what she's saying), the characters aren't all that compelling (although Hannah does give a different 'voice' to the omniscient narrator when focusing on each of them), and the plot is almost cringe-worthy. I just had to keep reading. I don't know that it's even because I wanted to know what happened next. It was pretty obvious what was going to happen next the whole time. I don't know. Whatever, it was an okay book.(less)

How interesting this book is. The majority of the book describes the life of two children, Bret and Jacey, and a husband, Liam. They learn about comas, closed-head injury's, and their mother/wife's past. The central focus is on the person in the coma but how the family responds to it intrigues the reader.
