Since I am a Quaker with many Catholic connections, I expected to like this book. However, I mostly found Lape's writing to be vague and dense. I understand her desire to protect the identity of her first and second husband and her children, but it leads to some very strained writing about her interactions with them, which are key to the story. This was a pleasant, insightful book about a woman's spiritual journey. The author had very unstable childhood, then found herself wandering in the social and cultural maelstrom of the sixties and seventies. After finding great peace, insight, and community in Quakerism, she eventually ended up returning to the Catholicism of her childhood, where she remains today.

I found this book interesting...makes me want to bring the tension of my charismatic inwardness into line with the traditional outwardness of the Catholic Church. :) There was a stretch in the middle of the book that I felt got bogged down, but I'm glad to have continued the read as I thought the last half of the book was the most worthwhile to read. I would be interested to know what Daren Redekopp would say about this book.
