I learned a lot about the Jewish culture in reading this book, as well as how and why it is not the same as the Jewish faith. The characters were struggling to understand their own heritage and what part of it was choice and what part a required privilege. It was extremely interesting and the characters and locations were well drawn.
Found it on the "give and take" shelf in the teacher's workroom at school. Did not expect much, but found it to be exciting and informative about much of 2 religions I did not know. The plot was a bit of a stretch in terms of reality, but work successfully in driving the story into several people's favorites!
One of my first novels and it captivated me to say the least. Its about love, religion, friendship, family. I did learn about the traditions of various religions in a way that doesn't get you bored.
i'm a born christian catholic but i got interested in jewish culture since i've read this book way back almost 6 yrs ago... ^_^ i longing to read this again.. two thumbs up...
Erich Segal could be considered to be a populist author and I certainly read anything written by him that I could find. Sadly, he died in January 2010 after suffering a heart attack. He was 72.
One of my favorite books. It's a comfort book for me. I reread it every few years. It's a fascinating story of love, family, and faith.
Amazing book....Changed my total perspective towards religion...got me a 20 in my essay....its a must read!!!!
Erich Segal is one of my favorite authors. The characters come alive in each and every story.

Good book, which looked at the hardships people face when dealing with their faith. Fast read.
Erich Segal's best, better than the much hyped Love Story. Moving and an amazing read.
One of THE most beautiful love stories ... and the best Erich Segal!
It's fine, not as good as I expected, but it's ok
1st novel i ever read ! Scandal after Scandal :)
a star-crossed-lovers story of a rabbi's daughter, and the irish catholic boy who is their gentile "slave"... sort of... it follows the rabbi's family, members of the UltraOrthodox sect of Judaism, and how the two oldest children, a son and daughter, come to terms with their faith, their feelings, and hypocrisy, and how a childhood love between the daughter and a neighborhood boy who grows up to become a priest spans many years... seems kinda silly as i write this, but i've read it ma...more
It's my favorite book of all times.

One of the best books I have read.
An Honest love story.
Loved! Loved! Loved!
must read... atleast once
one of my favorites.
A reread. I really enjoy this saga told from the point of view of two Jewish sibilings and a Catholic boy growing up in New York. Segal takes the reader from Brooklyn to Israel, Rome, and Brazil in this epic. I learn about Jewish culture (and pontifical politics) when I read this book.
My uncle Ted left this behind on a visit, so I read it. Probably not something I would have sought out on my own, but it did turn out to be a decent read. This traces the lives of an Orthodox rabbi's son and daughter and their interactions with a Catholic priest. I found the story to be engaging, but the writing is pretty average. I haven't read anything else of Segal's, so I wonder if his other work is as mediocre despite the high profile of his stuff?
''Timothy Hogan est un petit voyou irlandais des faubourgs de Brooklyn. Il deviendra archevêque.
Daniel Luria, fils unique du légendaire rabbin de Silcz, se détournera des Textes sacrés.
Il partira à la conquête de Wall Street. Déborah, sa soeur, écartée des études religieuses, amoureuse de Timothy, sera rabbin...
Trois existences hors du commun, trois destins contrariés, trois aventures échevelées et emblématiques.''

I am really enjoying this book!
i read during my college days. the beginning of the story is a bit slow that i have to force myself to continue reading hoping that it will have a great end. my patience pays me off...towards the middle the plot started to build up and later i know that i dont want to stop reading it. The story provides you different perspective of boundaries of religion in an affair.
Beautifully written, and in classic Segal style, very well researched.
Its not just the charachters and the events, but even cultures that are very vividly traced.
I personally found the ending quite movie-style, but then again, who doesnt love a happy ending!!!
A very serious and mature book, but a very feel-good one. Quite a rare combination!

It's an interesting tale when it comes to talking about two diverse cultures. However, I'm unable to find the flow in it. It's definitely not the best Segal I've read. And no, I don't think 'Love Story' was his best. I feel 'The Class' has been his best ever and this book doesn't quite deliver.
This is my favorite book of all time. A beautiful but painful love story, the main characters struggle with finding where they fit in. Finding one's true path and building relationships while dealing with family and community expectations. I have read this book a number of times.
