While it's not easy being a woman in a man's world, James Rycarte has decided that the reverse is also true. Taking on the job of principal at an all-female college at Cambridge has quickly become the biggest challenge of his career. He is breaking with tradition and the faculty is unhappy with the results. But amid the hostility of his fellows and the endless bureaucracy...more

Other than the beautiful one for The Tapestry of Love, Rosy Thornton really isn't well represented by her covers - other than the bicycle + mortarboard (and I guess the Cambridge bicycle...) this looks like a bit of chick lit fluff you'd bypass on the shelves. And what a loss that would be!

I know little about Cambridge colleges - things were never like this at Hull - but the world she describes has masses in common with any large workplace (I know - I'm a Civil Servant...). The author's strength...more

Reading the beginning of the famous N&S-fanfiction by Rosy Thornton, I wanted to read more by the same author. Looking for her books I found Hearts and Minds and was at once intruiged by the college setting. I love college stories.

I'm now in the middle of the book and it's a fun read. The characters are described very vividly and are already very familiar to me. The setting is very real and very "storylike" at the same time. I still don't really know what's the main plot supposed to be (well...more

The cover is a little misleading; this is far from fluffy chick-lit. It's set in an all-women's college in Cambridge, where they have just appointed a man, James Rycarte, as 'Master'. He's not even a Cambridge graduate, but an ex BBC journalist. Some of the staff opposed the appointment, and he quickly comes up against Ros, an outspoken feminist with strong principles.

Although much of the book is written from James' perspective, the most interesting character from my point of view was the Senio...more

Just a fantastic story: great location, wonderful detail and characters you can really care about.

Instantly loved this one by the time I was on page 10. So far, the characterization is fantastic, and I'm a big fan of characterization.

Update: you don't have to be an academic to love this one about life in Cambridge. It's just so much about humans, regardless of setting, than anything else. However, it's still fun to get the "insider scoop" on a place like Cambridge. Funny and poignant. I was most moved by the struggles of a mother dealing with her child's depression. The fantastic grasp Thorn...more

I found this a slightly difficult read but the story was quite engrossing so continued on. The characters were very well drawn. The University setting was unknown to me except for watching similar stories on television, and it was a bit hard to get a handle on the hierachy of the characters. I was glad I persevered to the end.

I learnt from this book that a well written and seemingly engaging book can be incredibly hard to get to the end of. If Rosy's characters hadn't been so sympathetic and well drawn there is no doubt that I'd have abandoned this read. Just not for me unfortunately!

This should be dull, given the topic, but I found it rather sweet and engaging.

I did not agree with some aspects of the ending and I think the cover is rather too 'chick-lit-y', but otherwise, a light lovely little read.
