Colin is a powerful shifter and a police detective, and Emily a human psychologist with the ability to identify different supernatural beings. She is brought on board to hunt for a serial killer who appears to be a supernatural creature of some sort.

This is a complex world the author has created, and yet I found it was explained well, with just the right amount of information being scattered throughout the story so that we understood without being bored. I was a bit hesitant to begin this, as I thought it was going to be one of those hokey paranormals where the author attempted to make the situation humorous - one of those series where it’s ‘hilarious’ that the different creatures visit a psychologist. It wasn’t. It was a very well-written story that, while setting up future novels, still managed to tie up all loose ends, instead of leaving things unresolved to force us to buy the next book (take note, Kresley Cole!!).

The sexual content in this book is no different to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, for example, and the sex does not occur until quite far into the book. It is certainly less erotic than hugely popular paranormal authors such as Kresley Cole, and on par with many of Christine Feehan’s books. I’ve never seen complaints about the sex in Cole’s books, and I'm confused why readers of those and the BDB series have complained about this book... Perhaps there were a few words I would preferred not to have seen used - and used so often - but it practically seems required to include certain things in paranormal romances these days.

I loved that this book was about far more than just ‘shifter claims his mate’. I loved the world the author has created. I loved that this is a world populated by many different characters, and yet we were never made to feel as confused or as though we had to buy more of the author’s books to get the full story. I will be reading more of this writer’s work.

I read this book awhile back and don't have a lot of recollection of the details of the story however, I do recall having a hard time forming any real connection with the characters but I did enjoy the plot. To be honest, my favorite parts of the book were the sessions with Dr. Emily Drake's psychotherapy patients. A Succubus who wanted to be looked at as more than just a sex symbol, a vampire who didn't want to drink blood... those were some funny characters!

If it was possible I'd rate this book 3,5 stars. Hotter After Midnigt started out light and fun in the office of the Monster Doctor Emily Drake who was having a meeting with a vampire with serious blood phobia. After that the story went pretty fast with Dr. Drake getting called to a murder scene that the Captain thought was caused one of the Others, as the supernatural beings are called. Even the love interest came quickly (or rather I-want-her-and-I-want-her-now spark.)

Nice read.

I bought this book because of the interesting story-idea of a psychotherapist treating supernaturals in trouble: vampires afraid of blood, succubi wanting true love intead of sex and so on. It sounded hilarious to me, like my kind of humour (admittingly not shared by everyone).

As far as I'm concerned, this book is hot before, during and after midnight. I really liked this story, the first of the Midnight Trilogy. I love Cynthia Eden's paranormal romance novels and for me, this was the one that started it all. I love when I start reading a series at the beginning and the writing and characters only get better with time, and this is a very good example of that. I love when I start reading a series at the beginning and the writing and characters only get better with time, and this is a very good example of that. While not the most polished book by this author, the bar is set very high from the getgo, the romance is spicy and sweet at the same time, and the characters are interesting and easy to root for.

One of the common issues that has to be resolved in a paranormal romance that eventually sets up the rules that the folks in the book have to follow is whether or not the rest of the world knows that the paranormal people exist. In this case, most humans are decidedly unaware of the things that go bump in the night, and the supernatural community would like to keep it that way. So when they need help tracking a serial killer who's running perilously close to exposing all of them, it's fortuitous that one of the best psychologists in the city happens to specialize in treating Others.

Dr. Emily is smart, both book smart and street smart, and all of her instincts that have kept her secret safe for so long tell her to leave Detective Colin alone, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars. Colin isn't about to let that happen and he gets all snarly alpha on her in a big way. Emily is forced to reconsider her previous notions about shifters (which Colin is) and whether getting mixed up with one is good or bad for her long term well-being. Chemistry is a bitch, isn't it?

The mystery of the identity of the Night Butcher isn't terribly hard to figure out once all the pieces are revealed and frankly, I didn't care- it was nice to have a good secondary story to support the romance. Sometimes it bugs me if I figure out the romance too early but this wasn't one of those times.

This series dovetails into the one she writes now (Night Watch) and while you don't have to read one to get the other, it does enhance the experience, at least it did for me. While not as polished as some of the later books this one is still fun, and on a snowy, blustery day like today, fun is a good thing.

Overall Grade: B+

Dr. Emily Drake is a very special psychologist. She sees demons. And vampires. And shifters. And a legion of Other supernatural beings that inhabit the world alongside us. She's one of the few full humans who know of the existence of Others but she's also got a bit of a leg up - she's the only one she's met who can sense them like she can. Known as the Monster Doctor among Others, she uses her empathic abilities to aid those creatures who go bump in the night, because in Dr. Drake's world, just because they bump doesn't mean they don't have issues. The Others are like us in one very important way - some are good to varying degrees, and some...well, some aren't. The problem is that when an Other is evil, the level of carnage can multiply exponentially. When the ravaged body of a human is discovered - one who definitely went the way of fangs and claws - who else but the Monster Doctor could ever hope to help the police in general, and one very sexy shifter, Detective Colin Gyth in particular, profile and stop this psychopathic Other from painting the city red.

Hotter After Midnight, was a nice surprise. Eden has created a believable world full of interesting paranormal characters and paired it with a decent romantic suspense plot. The blend works well together and as I'm a huge fan of both paranormal romance and romantic suspense, this juxtaposition impressed me.

The lead characters, Emily and Colin, were sizzling hot together, and I think the development of their relationship was one of the more satisfying I've read recently because of the level of communication between them. It was nice to read a couple that could admit potentially embarrassing things about themselves, and having a female lead that was both unashamedly sexual and unapologetically strong-willed tempered with some professed insecurities and a realistic awareness of self was not only refreshing, but much appreciated.

The plot was strong and it moved quickly, increasing threat going hand in hand with the burgeoning relationship between Emily and Colin. There was a nice balance there. There could have been a bit more depth given to their backstory and character development, and I wasn't totally thrilled with the conclusion of the mystery, as I think it became less about solving the crimes and more about the thing responsible tipping its hand (my personal preferences lie with the former), but I wasn't so turned off that it ruined anything for me. The sex scenes were smoking hot and deliciously graphic, though once that yummy wall was breached the sexual relationship took up a bit too much of the story. I'm not complaining about that, per se, but I wonder if there'd been a bit less of it if my other slight concerns would have been more fully addressed. There were a few unanswered questions, secondary and ancillary characters that could've been fleshed out more, and a couple of things I would have enjoyed more had they been given more time to develop, but for what was here, I am a very satisfied reader and intend to continue on with the trilogy and more of Eden's books. Great read.

Colin is hiding his dual nature. Painful past experience has led him to believe that humans cannot handle that fact that Others walk among them. When the pretty Monster Doctor not only tells him he is Other, but that she knows he's a shifter he's thrown into a tailspin. Everyone in the know, know that shifters are the most volatile of Other species. He doesn't want the pretty Doc to fear him, he wants her anyway he can have her.

Colin doesn't want to trust a human and Emily knows better than to trust an Other. That doesn't stop them from wanting to burn up the sheets. They have a murder to solve and there is no time to sort through the explosive emotions that they strike within each other. The clock is ticking when Emily becomes the obsession of their current psycho, and it becomes apparent that just ignoring each other isn't an option.

Em and Colin fire up the pages. Colin is very much the forceful He-man male. Emily is too self-possessed to fall in bed with the first hot guy that she meets...but its hard to deny him when his blazing blue eyes are burning into her and his hot body is primed just for her pleasure. There were a few places where the plot was stretched thin, Em's life altering experience was glossed over with just a few sentences. I suspect that is because this is an ongoing series and will be explained in more depth in future books (I hope so anyway). This wasn't a deal breaker though, this book was hot as hell, fast paced, and an all around excellent ride. Cynthia Eden's world is where Others walk among you and if you're lucky and determined, you can take one home with you forever.(less)

As soon as I picked up HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT I knew it was a winner. The plot grabbed me straightaway and wouldn’t let go. The pacing is terrific, the dialogue snappy and believable, and above all the storyline and romance are hot, edgy, and exciting. All the ingredients for a great paranormal romance.

Throughout the book we're also introduced to Todd Brooks, who is partner to Colin Gyth and the character that got my interest the most, and ME Smith who seemed like had a history with McNeal and several other supernatural creatures, the most important being Niol, the dangerous demon who owns a club for the "Others".

Emily Drake had a very very bad start to the book if you ask me and she was too close to be included to my "gal that annoyed the hell out of me" bookshelf, still don't know what saved her but whatever. She was borderline annoying at times. She's a psychologist for the Other, and yet this one time a poor vampire who has trouble drinking blood comes to her and even though she describes his problem as a very serious and deadly one she still manages to call him a drama queen. What? Have some compassion for your patients doc. Which brings me to my other annoying point. What was up with Colin calling Emily "Doc" all the freaking time? It was all "Doc this", "Doc that", "This and that, Doc"!! I got tired after a while and refused to read the word.

Colin's character was lacking. I mean sure, the guy was there and all, we had his POV but somehow I felt like the writer could've made a better effort getting into the mental status of the guy. Sure, he wss a "shifter" who turned into a wolf so he should've had animal instincts but the only thing the guy thought about was sexsexsex. Have her.Mark her.Fuck her.Sexsexsex. And it didn't matter much whether there was danger around them or other people or they were discussing the case. Whatever, whenever.

Danny McNeal, captain of the PD, I didn't get what he was all about. He knew about all the "Other" stuff and he kept referring to the supernaturals as "we" and yet we were never hinted towards him being a supernatural. All the time I read him as human who knew about all this but somehow the wording of the guy kinda screwed up that aspect.

The only likeable characters in this book were Niol -the demon trouble- and Todd Brooks -Colin's partner, human, clueless- And the way Brooks was ignored all throughout the investigation, just because he didn't know about the nature of the crime and the "monsters who happen to be real", was not believable.(less)

The premise here is good. The mythology is imaginative, drew me right in. But the relationship between the leads wasn't as well done as I would have liked: the attraction between Emily and Colin happened so quickly - upon their first meeting - that it didn't feel right.

My first Cynthia Eden book and I LOVED it. The cop story, romance, and paranormal elements wove in and out nicely, each supporting the other. Very picky about my paranormal romances. Colin Gyth is a cop. And a shifter. he wonders why his captain has requested the presence of a psychiatrist to the scene of a grisly murder. But Colin soon realizes with shock what Emily is. His own identity as a shifter is a highly guarded secret. His last partner, when he found out what Colin was, attempted to kill him. So Colin keeps his paranormal identity under wraps.

But as soon as Emily sees him she knows what he is. The two are thrown together to find the killer -- a paranormal creature who is not done killing.

I got this book as a free kindle download. I had not read this author before and only got it to have "just in case." I wasn't even particularly interested in reading a paranormal either, but the first few chapters really caught my eye. And then i really got immersed in the story.

First, I like that the author has created a world with some pretty evident rules. In this case the paranormal community is not out in the open, there are a lot of different paranormal "races". Like only recognizes like. Paranormals know another paranormal when they see one, but they may not know exactly what type another one is. And Emily can see them all and can place their power level from a range of one to ten.

Second, I like that the book was a nice hybrid of styles. It was a romance, but it was also a mystery/police procedural. And the love scenes had a nice erotica flavor to them.

And third, I really liked the supporting cast. Breakout characters include Niol, the very powerful demon who runs the 'Other' bar known as Paradise Found. this is a series so I hope we get to see much more of Niol. Colin's partner, Brooks, was also intriguing. And I couldn't help but feel bad for the guy. He was kept out of the loop of the investigation because Colin was so freaked about his last partner. I also liked the captain, Danny and love the fact that he and the gorgeous ME Smith had a little vibe going.

When I finished the book, i found that I enjoyed it so much that I really wanted to go and get the second one. So i downloaded it right then. Curse you Kindle! :)(less)
