Marguerite is a spy for the French. Her current assignment is to kill Nicolai Ostrovsky, ostensibly a Russian actor in Venice, in reality a spy for the Tsar. He bests her and escapes, taking her favorite dagger with him. Marguerite is determined to get it back, and finish her assignment by killing him...some day.

We first met Nicolai Ostrovsky in Ms. McCabe's A Notorious Woman where he was the hero's mysterious best friend. I was delighted to learn he has his own story in this book. It begins in Venice 1525, when the infamous Emerald Lily fails to assassinate our Nicolai who is suspected of being a Russian spy. Two years later, our assassin, Marguerite meets Nicolai again in England. She is sent as a spy with the French delegation, and he is with the Spanish court as a guardian to his friend's mother.

Veramente brutto... storia assurda, personaggi insulsi...
