A very literate literary biography, and also one that gives as full a psychological portrait of the man as can be given, especially since most of his plays were showcases for his political and social ideas. However, the more you know about the man, the more you see how his biography informs his characters, their foibles, and their relationships.

Shaw comes across as a very likable and charming man, however much he tried to keep sentimentality at a distance.

This book is a must ready for anyone who is interested in how life was in England 120 years ago. Shaw was a person of high moral in a world full greed and hypocrisy. If you ever ask yourself how our world became what it is today, this book will let you understand some of the circumstances.. Stay away from it if you don't like biographies..

When I wrote a play on Shaw I used Holroyd as my main resource.

A model of a biography. A beautifully written life of a man by turns silly and sensible - a near genius in some respects whose plays, and letters can be read with pleasure.
