The Doomspell (Doomspell #1)
Rachel has been having disturbing dreams at night that feel too real. Then her brother, Eric, has the very same dream-about a dark mysterious woman with a live snake for a necklace. Then, on a quiet afternoon, Rachel and Eric are ripped through a wall of their house and transported to a cold and dangerous other world. It is ruled by Dragwena, a witch.

I'm not sure how old I was when I first read this. Fairly young -- probably around nine or ten. Definitely still in primary school, and I think my sister borrowed it for me. Since then I've read it several times, because it's such a creative book. I love the development of the sibling relationship and how, despite their strengths being in different areas of life, they still manage to use them to work together.

I was bought this book by my foster mother a fairly long time ago (I was about 14 I think) and I really liked it, in fact I loved it. I re-read it so many times that my poor old paperback is nearly falling apart. Recently I picked it up again, I did however read it with something like a sense of dread because I know how much your taste can change over many years, and I really didn't want to read it to find that I hated it! Luckily, this was not an issue.

I got a copy of this book for my 9th birthday and I loved It. I had read it a couple of times then, when we moved, it got packed in a box that was never unpacked and stuffed in an attic. Now finally, I was digging through the attic looking for a CD, when I found it again. I sat down, in the attic, and began to read it again. I sat there in the attic, until I had finished a few hours later. Still, years later, I loved it. You need to read it. If you don't you are missing out. So go to your local...more
this is a really great book that i personally loved. i read it for the first time a few years ago and since then, i have read it 8 times!! it is full of adventure and new creative ideas when rachel and her brother eric are not just stolen away from their family, but from earth by the witch dragwena who has been stealing children for thousands of years, hoping to find a child like rachel. a child full of enough magic to help the witch. when rachel and eric arrive on the witch's planet of Ithrea,...more
The covers says "a battle between good and evil" but I didn't expect so much evil. Rachel and Eric get sucked from the basement by a clawed creature and taken to the cold, barren planet Ithrea. The area is ruled by Dragwena, the evil witch. The book very quickly overwhelmed me with the darkness and I had to put it down. I picked it up again and trudged through it to get it over with, not because it wasn't a good read but just not a good read for me--a surprise since I love fantasy and the battle...more
I read this when I was a bit younger and LOVED it. There were a few things that I didn't understand back then but after I re-read it I understood it all being that bit older. The world Cliff Mcnish creates is magical and different in its own right. The characters you can relate to and do feel for them. Definitly worth a read
This book is excellent; it conveys a fabulous, convincing portrayal of a magical alternative existence. The siblings' journey through the land is aided by the excellent characterisation, particularly of the evil queen. The close escapes are tense and the book well thought out. An excellent other-wordly fantasy.
Highly imaginative series with an original concept and vivid writing style. It doesn't take long for the action to commence in this novel. It's one of the creepiest and scariest books for children I have ever read as well as one of the most magical. I completely enjoyed it!
Very well written fantasy story aimed at 9 - 12 year olds. An enjoyable read for adults, too.

According to my Mum, when I was arriving in this world on the night of 24th August 1962 the electricity in the house failed, and all the lights went out. So I was born part in darkness and part in candlelight. I’ve no idea what significance that has, but it sounds impressive somehow…
