A well-written biography that avoids some of the pitfalls of the genre, although it is clearly dated.

Woodress's biography of Booth Tarkington is structured around the rather non-involving claim that Tarkington was both shaped by his Indiana roots and his social status as a gentleman--thus the subtitle of the biography is also the title of Tarkington's first novel, A Gentleman of Indiana. Collection of Short stores and novels by Booth: Penrod, Alice Adams, and Magnificent Ambersons. The shorts have slight twists a la O' Henry but geared more towards social class and particularly females.
