Recommends it for: folk interested in gay fiction, gay erotica, historical drama
I liked this very much. The emotion reached many levels and was well described. The attitude to homosexuality in that age was obvious but never thrust down the reader's throat, taken for granted that that's how it was. There was drama, sadness and horror but it did not overshadow the love and hope for the future. While the ending was not quite what I expected, it was certainly true to the time and the characters as expressed.

I hope there will be a sequel - the story cries our for it and I, for

It’s an intriguing premise and Woods has obviously done a ton of research about Sint Maarten, sugarcane and the Dutch trade, and that shows. There’s rather a little too much history at the beginning of the book – which follows on from the very opening scene, a sex-scene between Pieter and Joss and pulls you away from a erotic beginning into HISTORY! 5 Stars from Fallen Angel Reviews!
Stevie Woods delivers a powerful story wrapped within the history of slavery. I will admit this is not one of my usual pieces of literature to read, but I was beyond pleased upon completion. The characters, plot, and setting were all strong elements and transported me back to 1855. If you enjoy historical fiction Cane is sure to be an enjoyable read.

5 Stars from Rainbow Reviews!:

"The book is one of historical significance as Ms. Woods has done a lot of background research on St. Martin in the 1850's and Louisiana in the 1860's describing to the reader what is going on in those two places and the attitude of the people at that tumultuous time. I think more than a romance this was also historical and the character development was awesome. I could see exactly what the characters looked like and what they were thinking. I could also feel as if

I am a published author of gay romantic erotica - I term it such because I view my stories as primarily romance with a touch of erotica. I write well plotted tales in which sex plays a role. My work is in a variety of genres - historical, fantasy, paranormal, futuristic and contemporary.
