This is the most dearest and charming book EVER! I enjoyed it even a teensy bit more I think than the first book and was "glad" indeed when everything ended so nicely and perfectly. It only took me a couple of days to finish; I couldn't put it down. A new favorite book to add with my collection of "period drama" favorites. ;)

It was interesting to discover what happened to Pollyanna and Jimmy in their later years, although I found Aunt Polly's relapse quite unbelievable.......

Pollyanna shown in ''Pollyanna Grows Up'', isn't the same as the one shown in the first book. She really got my nerves on.

An entertaining sequel to 'Pollyanna', full of characters from the first book, including Aunt Polly, John Pendleton and Jimmy Bean, who is now Jimmy Pendleton.

In the first half of the book, Pollyanna is sent to stay with Mrs Ruth Carew, a lady in deep depression because her beloved little nephew was taken away by his eccentric father. Even though her brother-in-law has passed away, little Jamie's whereabouts are still unknown. These days he'd be on the missing person files. Ruth can't bear not k

This book was a bit strange as it was definitely a 2-in-1 story. The first half of the book starts soon after the first book ended and Pollyanna is now 12, and not 11 years old as she was in the first book. The story involves her aunt and uncle leaving for Germany and so Pollyanna goes to live with an acquaintance in Boston in an effort to cheer up the sad, lonely, negative woman.

The second half of the book picks up when Pollyanna is 24 years old! and a lot has happened too. Her new uncle has p
I first read Pollyanna, as a youngster, probably around the time the first Disney movie was released. I loved the book, probably more because of the movie and my crush on Hayley Mills. I never read this sequel, Pollyanna Grows Up so when I found it for free for the Kindle, I downloaded it. As a nostalgia trip, this book was okay. Otherwise I found it cloying and predictable. Pollyanna spends a winter in Boston while her aunt and new husband Dr. Chilton head to Europe. Pollyanna brings the Glad G ...more
This was lovely, charming and a bit strange. While the story of Pollyanna is a story of optimism, it is almost one of extreme optimism. At times Pollyanna's life philosophy tends to be a little ridiculous, especially as she grows up.

However my main problems with this little tale of optimism, love and wonder, is Porter's structure. "Pollyanna Grows Up" almost feels like to separate story lines; in the first half of the novel Pollyanna is still a child, and in the second half we meet her 10 years

As a child I loved Pollyanna it was one of those movies that I think my parents had to buy six or seven times because I had worn out the VHS completely. I never knew that there was a second Pollyanna and although I have read a lot of books I had never read the first one either. So I sat on my journey at a time I needed to be glad. The recent storms took my lights out this past weekend so it was a good thing my Kindle was fully charged and waking up to 100 degree weather at 5 am you find that Pol ...more
We love Pollyanna and her contribution to encouraging people to have a positive mental attitude. If you want more of the first book, you won't be disappointed. Seriously, Pollyanna inspires an older woman, gets her married and helps another young boy find a home.

The message of being an example and not preaching is nicely illustrated. I liked how having material possessions was shown not to be a reason for being glad, but that doesn't mean to not be grateful. Material wealth isn't what life is a
This was a fitting conclusion to the Pollyanna story. Pollyanna grows up in the second half of the book where secrets are uncovered and love professed. It is somewhat predictable but I find that to be the case in many of these early 20th century romance novels. Pollyanna continues to play the "glad game" which results in a happy ending for everyone.
I'm truly glad I found this book. I love the "Glad Books" so much and I though Pollyanna was a stand alone, so I was utterly happy when I found this one.
Pollyanna was given to me by a dear friend who says she's reminded of Pollyanna when she hears me talk, because I always see the bright side of things.
I grew up with book, I grew up a bit with Pollyanna, with her attitudes and her way of facing life: I cried onto this book and smacked it a lot into the table in the parts that frustrated me while

Redimi ex detenuti allo sbando, salva orfanelli smarriti, dona ...more
For the past couple of years, Hesperus Press has been releasing Andrew Lang's Fairy Books in beautiful hardcover editions. I only recently discovered their paperback editions of children's books from the past that should never have went out of print. Some of these titles include Tanglewood Tales, The Wouldbegoods, The Lost Prince, and many other wonderful titles. Today, I am reviewing Pollyanna and Pollyanna Grows Up by Eleanor H. Porter.

I first learned of the character Pollyanna in my childhood
Sarah Brazytis
We read the sequels to 'Five Little Peppers'.
We read the sequel to 'Heidi'.
None of them really grew up.
But Pollyanna does!

The book begins with Pollyanna still a little girl, but able to "Walk, Walk, Walk!" She manages to spread her cheer to a lonely woman mourning the loss of a beloved nephew before she really 'grows up', appearing in chapter 16 as a twenty-year-old young woman - really.

Now the fun begins. Remember Jimmy Bean? Well, he's grown up too, and is the pride and joy of his adopted fath

This was just my kind of follow up to Pollyanna. I was super sad that her new uncle died, but I knew that was happening from the back of the book. Pollyanna continues being Pollyanna, even though sometimes it is hard to look at the good in her life situations. And there is a happy ending, and I LUUUV happy endings!
A very confusing mix of charming and annoying! While some chapters lived up to its predecessor (Pollyanna), others almost put this book in my "did not finish" pile!

I enjoyed the first part although I have a hard time believing anyone would send a child who had spent the last year painfully learning to walk, to live at an unknown place with a cranky woman she didn't know! However, reading about Pollyanna unknowingly helping this woman made me smile.

I do love the classics! This sequel to the original Pollyanna was actually better the first book, which is really saying something.

Most people probably hear the phrase "being a Pollyanna" and have no idea where it comes from. The phrase comes from this beloved book character, a perpetual optimist who has so much reason to be a pessimist. In this book, her uncle has died and left the family in dire financial straits. Pollyanna tries so hard to use her unfailing optimism and bring her aunt back to
A delightful followup. Pollyanna's game, and her attitude as a child, were both inspirational but I had wondered how it would hold up, how she would change as an adult, and I was not disappointed by Porter's handling. (I know some people found the 5 year gap to be weird, but I didn't.)

I may revise this rating upwards after a reread.)

I used to really love the movie Pollyanna with Haley Mills and I remembering wondering what happened to her. This book answered that question. There are really 2 parts. the first part is about a year after Pollyanna's accident and the second part is about 6 years after that when she turns 20. I won't give much away but I feel the character Pollyanna stayed true to herself. I imagine trying to portray an adult Pollyanna is difficult and I'm sure some people found problems with her, but I think Po ...more
So, I had no idea that this book existed until I happened upon it while looking for material to read with my invalid wife. This turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The first part of the book was typically a Pollyanna story - Pollyanna goes to live with a depressed grouchy older woman in Boston and as a result turns the lady's life around as only Pollyanna can. Then after spending 6 years or so traveling, she and Aunt Polly return to Vermont, broken people with money problems - which Pollyanna ...more

The start was quiet boring, but as I started to get into reading it I started to enjoy it much better. I love the way that everyone found their perfect match. And I was so happy that Jimmy and Pollyanna fell in love with each other. They were so cute together.

But in the I was quiet upset because the end was cut off a bit, like the writer only had an amount of papers that she could use, and only had one paper left for the romance at the end.

The second Glad-book

It's not as influential as Pollyanna. But when you love that girl, you're just glad there's more of her to read about.

"Of course if she begins to preach, and to tell me to count my blessings, I shall send her away."
my exact sentiment in life.. I hate it when someone preaches, I just feel the need to rebel and do the exact opposite.. but that's where Pollyanna is different.. she never tells she just lives and you pick it up from her.. she doesn't need to tell you about miracles.. when she's a liv
