Absolute Surrender is a must-read classic for any Christian. Even though this short book was first published in 1895, it really is timeless. Andrew Murray discusses the need for us to surrender ourselves to the will of God and hold nothing back. He does a wonderful character study of Peter, looking at the amazing transformation from the man who denied Jesus 3 times, to the man who would become the rock the church was built on. Mr. Murray really makes the case of the struggling Christian in Roman...more
"All these searchings and hungerings and longings that are in your heart, I tell you they are the drawings of the divine magnet, Jesus Christ."
"When God gives the Holy Spirit, His great object is the formation of a holy character." You mean it's not for marginalizing people and condemning people we disagree with? Hmmmm...
"That there are differences of opinion does not trouble me. We do not have the same constitution and temperament and mind." Wow! If only we took this kind of thinking to heart i...more

The book was good for what it is: a quasi-devotional. It was certainly readable, though I often felt I was being told a lot without really being told anything. Murray writes with a lot of imagery, which isn't bad in itself, but rather than using the imagery for clarification that's all it was. This made it very hard to ascertain what, if anything, his words really mean. He writes quite poetically, which I think is meant to stir the emotions, but once one comes down from the emotional high and re...more
Andrew Murray presents the concept of absolute surrender to Christ in the style of a sermon. He writes about the call to surrender as well as the effects absolute surrender has on the life of a Christian. This book caused me to think more and more deeply every time I turned the page, and I often paused to consider what I can do to be a better follower of Christ. Andrew Murray cites biblical passages throughout every chapter and challenges the reader to pursue a deeper relationship with Christ th...more
I recieved the baptism of the Holy Ghost 34 years ago without ever reading the book. Just the cover and title was sufficient to convert me. Always praying that same prayer through the years; Lord, I surrender all. I finally decided to order the book and this time I started reading it. I am almost to the end. How much pain could I have saved myself if I had read it when it was first given to me. Awesome book that all who seek a relationship with God should read. There is so much joy and peace whe...more
A series of sermons composes Absolute Surrender by the South African pastor Andrew Murray (1828-1917). This isn't my general type of reading but I did find it refreshing. Sermons are generally passively received on Sunday mornings so I found it a unique twist to actively read them. The messages they hold are clear and concise making them into a bountiful spiritual meal. I can well imagine that many would shy away from this book but for a chosen few it is sure to provide insight.
I really enjoy the way that Murray writes. He has a way of talking directly to the reader (hard to explain if you haven’t read one of his books). His theology is really solid and his passion for people to walk intimately with Jesus permeates everything he says. This book talks about what it means to give every part of yourself fully to Jesus and it was really encouraging to read and be drawn more into remaining in the Vine for all of life.
Absolute Surrender is an edited collection of messages delivered in London by Andrew Murray in preparation for an evangelistic crusade. These words have had enduring meaning for those seeking to lead the Spirit-filled life which is commanded in Ephesians 5:18. "Being filled with the Spirit is simply this-having my whole nature yielded to His power."
Very inspirational. Sometimes when I need that extra little boost, I turn to this book. The greatest gifts come only with our 'absolute surrender' to God. While the chapters are fairly long, it's broken up into several messages per chapter. Easy to pick up and read a message or two without missing the whole meaning of the chapter.
This book, as well as many other writings by Murray, has challenged and encouraged me in my walk with Christ. My husband and I joke that he is a dead mentor to us, because when we read his writings there is a longing in us to imitate his faith, his passion for God, his conviction about being holy, his understanding about the grace of God. We admire just how plainly and affectionately he wrote about heavenly things as though he truly understood them. We just sit amazed at what God revealed to him...more
Powerful book and great as long as you realize that God accepts us totally in Christ because of His absolute surrender for us on the cross. Our absolute surrender is the only appropriate response. Also, our surrender to Him is active obedience (Romans 12:1-2) and trust in Him. John Owen's little book "the mortification of sin" would be a good follow up to illustrate that we will always be putting to death the flesh by the power of the Spirit. It's not something you can do in an afternoon, but I...more
In this book, Andrew Murray targets, perhaps, the single hardest, yet absolutely necessary attitude to living victoriously in Christ - total, uncompromising surrender. As the Christian life begins in the Spirit, it too must be lived in the Spirit. Yet many believers stumble here, thinking that once redeemed by Christ, their lives are now filled with joyless drudergy. Pastor Murray gives us not only suggestions as to why / how this might happen, but gives us the remedy - Absolute Surrender.

“God has a plan for His Church upon earth. But alas! we too often make our plan, and we think that we know what ought to be done. We ask God first to bless our feeble efforts, instead of absolutely refusing to go unless God go before us.”
