Book Review
Out of His League by Pat Flynn
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a different country on a foreign exchange program? What would you do while you were there? You could have experiences that you will never forget. They could be either good or bad depending on how you choose to spend your adventure. Out of His League by Pat Flynn is a kind of realistic fiction that teaches you to not let popularity and hype get the best of you.
Ozzie wants to go to America for an exchang...more

Austin Eaton, aka Ozzie, leaves his Pop, girlfriend, and best friend in Yuranigh, Australia for a chance to spend a year in Hope, Texas on a student exchange. Ozzie is a great footballer and might have a chance at the pros in Australia, but in Texas no one has heard of Rugby League football. He nonetheless makes the Hope Shooter football team and makes unorthodox rugby play suggestions to the coach and helps turn around a losing team. Along the way he antagonizes the star quarterback, attracts t...more

Out Of His League by Pat Flynn is a good book for anyone. I think it would appeal to boys, girls, athletes, and non-athletes. Anyone who is looking for a book about sports or romance would enjoy this book. The story keeps you engaged the whole time. I thought the author wrote particularly well before the game when Ossie’s team took on their rival. You can also feel the tension between Ossie and his girlfriend back in Australia when they talk on the phone. Ossie has a hard time deciding if he sho...more

I actually kind of like reading football books, oddly enough since I'm not athletic nor have I ever played a team sport. This book is about high school football, kids growing up, and a look at America from an Australian's viewpoint. And it's not too complimentary; we are a little too pampered, too rich, too self-concerned, and too self-indulgent. Ozzie is an 18-year-old exchange student who likes to play Rugby League, which is a lot like football, and football is king in Hope, Texas. Since Ozzie...more

Austin "Ozzie" Eaton takes part in an exchange program to attend high school in America. He quickly discovers that things are much different in the United States than in his home country, Australia. After he joins the football team, he begins to feel that he belongs, using his rugby techniques to improve the team's record.

The writing style of the book wasn't stellar and the relationships felt very flat, but I enjoyed reading it.

I almost ditched this book several times but it kept my interest just enough to finish it. The premise was intriguing but the execution never felt plausible. The author also seems to be trying to fit too many themes into one story.

Great sports read, with some great issues to make one think about their actions :)
