It was fun. I love Reardon's curmudgeonly view of the world. Maybe that's because I identify with him so strongly. A good solid read, very funny in places, but not a patch on the original Radio 4 series upon which it is based. Even though I read it and heard Christopher Douglas's voice in my head, it wasn't quite as comically rich. A good read though and recommended :)

This very closely adheres to the script for Series 1 of Ed Reardon's Week on BBC Radio 4, which is a good thing if you're fond of the lovable grump (I am). Join Ed, an aging writer of marginal success, in his daily tramp through a world of slights and injustices. The storylines can be squirm inducing since Ed always loses spectacularly in the end, but his elegantly crafted insults kept me smiling and turning the pages.

As the protagonist narrator's name suggests, this is a new "New Grub Street", essentially the scripts of the first series of the BBC radio comedy, now 10 years and 10 seasons old, and hilariously funny. All failed writers of a certain age ought to find something embarrassingly familiar here, especially if they're male, bearded, cat-keeping and borderline alcoholic.
