I got this after I had read The Eyewitness, because I enjoyed his writing so much.

The story of a young man in a military school in western Europe pre-WW1. He is a product of his environment.

Ernst Weiss was admired by Thomas Mann who described his writing as having a "pearlescent sheen". I wanted to see what he meant. I came away from reading this satisfied but disturbed. He does not flinch from reality.
