Part 2 of Transitions. I agree that it did seem to drag on at times, but I don't believe that we need to have edge of your seat action on every page to make a good book. As the series title says, changes are happening. Obould has secured his kingdom and a tentative treaty is shared with Mithril Hall. Cattie Brie replaces her bow and sword with the tutelage of Alustriel. The Harpels adopt some inhumane, if not curiously amusing, methods of dishing out justice. And, Luskan suffers from a brutal ci...more

I'll be honest with you- I am getting so sick of Salvatore's Drizzt books that I got this from the library pretty much just in case I ran out of other things to read during my paternity leave. I started reading it almost reluctantly, but you know what? It sucked me right in, just like pretty much every Salvatore Drizzt book to date.

I love Salvatore as a Dungeons and Dragons style fantasy writer. Lately though his more recent novels about his character Drizzt have been unimpressive. He has missed out on the deep character development that I used to love. His most recent novels have been about war and not much else. Drizzt seems almost too at peace with himself. In the previous novels it was his internal conflict that made him such an interesting character. His sword skills also seem to be getting weaker. He used to b...more

Ugh. What a chore this book was. It took me three weeks to finish and there were many days I didn't even pick it up. This is one of my favorite series, my favorite character and it was just awful. Salvatore is getting ridiculously boring in his later novels. Pages and pages and pages...and pages of intrigue. I'm incapable of skimming, I have to attempt to understand EVERYthing and sometimes my brain doesn't latch on. The last 40 pages of the book were somewhat interesting with the big reveal/re...more

This book just felt off to me. I've generally been a fairly big fan of Salvatore over the years, dating all the way back to the original publication of The Crystal Shard, but I'm gradually finding his books less appealing. While my tastes have changed somewhat, I think it has more to do with some aspect of the writing.
This book is darker than many of his others, but that is not the problem. This subseries trilogy is rightfully called "Transitions" and certainly appears to r...more

Good, but seems more like its setting up for a bigger plot in the next book so far.I enjoy how the author continues plot so well, and keeps the pace and continuation going where it doesn't make it ever seem like the story ends.. it is written like life.. a continuation instead of one short story about one short event like most books or series. Of course this being book number.. 19 or 20 of the series, it would seem like that wouldn't it >D. As a gamer, I also appreciate how the author in a ...more

Almost gave it another star for a perfect rating. Simply a very entertaining book. Some of Salvatore's musings via his characters are pretty darn heavy philosophy for what is usually such a shallow genre. Kinda like the Brothers Karamazov. Only way easier to read. And fulla dragons and stuff. And Pirates. If it had ninjas I mighta gave it the last extra star.

This book made me really sad. I've been an avid fan of Salvatore's Drizzt books since I read that first print of The Crystal Shard way back when. I think that the whole Drizzt thing has been played out. It feels tired. The characters have been so developed over the years that reading the book feels like Salvatore just sent in his diary to the editor and they printed it. It meanders along as if it were a collection of Salvatore's thoughts-of-the-day.

A good book filled with intrigue though it could have been better. This book in the Transitions series focuses largely on two characters, Drizzt and Regis leaving the others out. The Pirate King can seem tedious at times but the author seems like he is setting up for the third book in the series by including sections on politics and factional infighting. Like all of Salvatore's books, this one picks up towards the end and the last 50 pages or so has most of the good parts.

This book is pretty good but nothing like many of the other books that feature Drizzt. This story only contains Regis and the elf and really leaves out the other characters for most of the book. The book is slower but then seems to wrap up all it's loose ends quickly.

The pirate King is the second book in the transition series by R.A. Salvatore. This book highlights the tales of Drizzt and Regis as they travel from Mithral Hall to Ice Wind dale and to Luskan. Along they way they encounter a number of change familiar lands and friends. They also take part in a rebellion in Luskan as well. The novel also feature Captain Deudermont and the crew of the Sea Spirit. As with a lot of Salvatore works this fast pace and action pack, and with Drizzt books of late t...more

This book was rather...blah. Nothing special happened, some nobodies died, then some somebodies died, booooring. Hopefully the next installment is better.

Very good continuation of the most recent Drizzt trilogy. A lot of wizard battles for you magic fans out there.

While I enjoyed The Pirate King, it wasn't as gripping for me as most of Salvatore's other books I've read. I'm used to be pulled back and forth by intense action and emotion in a Drizzt novel, but this one didn't do that so much. Perhaps for the story of this book he wanted to tell it that way purposely. It seems like the transitional book itself in this series dubbed "transitions". Like a story told to move a set of characters to another place in preparation for a grand finale. ...more

I was disappointed with this book. It seemed more about Luskan and the struggle for power there generally then with advancing the characters individually. The second book in a trilogy generally has trouble with climax and I found the build up to the climax and the actual climax itself very disappointing. Hopefully the final Transitions book will be better.

I really enjoy the Drizzt books, but this is probably the worst one yet.

Definitely NOT my favorite book of the Drizzt series. I was bored pretty much the whole book. I am only reading them now to finish the series. Only one more and I think they will finally be over - all 18 of them.
